Description
It's been a long time coming.

This is my first new tune in quite a while (not counting a cover posted recently), except it's not really a "new" tune. I wrote it back in 2012, did a rough recording and then just forgot about it. I stumbled across it again about a month ago and started working with it. I ended up completely rerecording the song, changing some stuff from my original plan and retooling it from top to bottom.

I have also been honing my Logic skills when it come to mixing and mastering. I'm just really getting started, but hopefully some of the new stuff I've learned will show. (Just learning how to use buses and aux. track has been a real help)

This kind of harkens back to my "wall of sound" tendencies. I've got five different guitar tracks going at times in addition to the bass and drums. The drummer track is actually doubled with each track just slightly different. I've also got a lot of vocal harmony in a few places.

Though the lyrics were written four years ago, I think they actually apply even more today than they did back then. It's a commentary on the world we've made today with just a tinge of hope for the future, but not too much because I don't want to sound too optimistic or anything. ;)

I hope you enjoy this. It was fun for me to actually get back to recording again. Hopefully it won't be quite so long next time.

BTW. Play it LOUD!

Intro - Em/C

Em/C/Am

Time and again
I look for the line
That’s drawn between
Reason and fear
It seems like it’s moving
So far in the distance
Will I see it again

The madness has taken
its toll on my life
and caused me to
scream at the walls
spinning my head
til I’m out of control
tripping me up again

D/C

D/C
Em

I say goodbye to reason
My friend for so many years
I say goodbye to the scarecrows
Who fan all our fears
I say goodbye to those that hate
And I go my own way
Goodbye

Who can I talk to
Where can I go
To find my
peace of mind
How can I listen
To the shouts in the dark
Bringing me down again

I sit here and worry
As the darkness surrounds me
Taking a hold of my soul
Crying the tears
Of the damned in the night
Will I sleep again sleep again
I say goodbye to reason
My friend for so many years
I say goodbye to the scarecrows
Who fan all our fears
I say goodbye to those that hate
And I go my own way
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

Time and again
I look for the kindness
From man
To his fellow man
It seems like it’s vanished
Off in the distance
Never to return

The preacher who preaches
The pundits who speak
Say it’s Us against them
And when they’re all through
We hate and we hate
And the flames are fanned again

I say goodbye to reason
My friend for so many years
I say goodbye to the scarecrows
Who fan all our fears
I say goodbye to those that hate
And I go my own way
Goodbye
Goodbye

Tell me your story
And I’ll tell you mine
We’ll find Some common ground
We walk in the footsteps
Of millions before us
listen to reason again

Everyday people
Everyday places
Everyday lives we all live
We all need to stand
Our future in hand
And live together again

We say goodbye to reason
Our friend for so many years
We say goodbye to the scarecrows
Who fan all our fears
We say goodbye to those that hate
And we go my own way
Goodbye
Goodbye

Goodbye

Intro is...
..over a minute in length. Hard to sustain interest with repeated chords for so long. Your narrative message is a powerful one...I am wondering if you might consider bringing the vocal UP in the mix...Actually the whole mix seems a little soft to me. The lengthy interlude that starts around 4:30 has some really nice guitar work, but it's way too soft. I think if you pumped up the whole number it would present the song with considerably more impact. Glad I heard this tune tonight.

Joseph this is great. All those guitars and that wall of sound at the beginning are like it keeps coming in waves. I felt like a surfer on a powerful wave. I can relate to the lyrics. I had a thought in my head, well just a title really, The Death of Compassion. To me this song is about the acceptance of chaos and wondering why you can't relate to your fellow man. And a thought perhaps that you were conceived after your mom was floated up to one of those celestial chariots.

Intense work Joe
Quite an epic to come back with!

I'm not sure I got the tinge of hope but it's an impressive pic of melancholia.

Cheers

Goodbye
I am a fan of layered wall of guitar sound. So this one is right up my alley. Doubled drummer track is a nice bonus. Musically, I hear a lot of 70's vibe here, but the lyrics is something totally different. Overall, I enjoyed this one very much. Thank you and cheers.

Goodbye
Neil obviously got out of the basement and watched over your shoulder while you recorded, Joe :-) Crunchy guitars, wailing leads and a plaintive vocal. Love the bass lines you have drawn, too. I liked the extended intro and the song grew on me more and more as it developed, especially the memorable chorus. Good one. Thanks.
