Have MacGila, will travel... &mdash 03/23/05 - 12:04:32 PM
You've created na Gila monster! This is fun and well-
scored/played... you didn't mention how you entered all
those notes, keyboard? Made me smirk, and I'm not even
Jewish (a long funny story about me too) or Scottish. As
some might say, that's the second-best use of bagpipes I
ever heard :-)
ttfn,
Drakonis

Hey thanks...I input the whole thing with my handy dandy Keystation 49e and the memories of every bar/bat mitzvah I ever went to. They could have used a few bagpipes.

I had not heard of John Zorn before you mentioned him, but a quick Google makes me think I should look into his stuff. Thank you! I do like Hip Hop Hoodios though.

Hello Renee.

(Or is it Rene -- that was one funny conversation on the
Apple board!)

My. isn't this good clean fun! I would have like to have
been to this wedding!

My only comment is the name. I would have called it either
"Hamish Negila" or "Hava Maguire."

Welcome to MJ! See you around!

It's funny, because it's true! &mdash 10/02/05 - 01:17:49 AM
My wedding was a mixture of traditions, including Jewish and Scottish
traditions. The bagpipers who escorted my wife down the aisle
surprised us during the recessional by bursting into hava nagila. The
only thing is that, unlike the bagpipes in your song, the bagpipes being
played were not chromatic, so could not play all the right notes.

However, the approximation was close enough that in the video, you
can see the groom's (my) side--the Jewish side--pause at the start,
recognize the tune, and bust into laughter. It's pretty great. It went
well with the custom kippahs I had made using the bride's family tartan
material for all the men in the bridal party, including the pipers.

Maybe I'll post a recording gleaned from the video.

That is fantastic! I also have some relatives in Scotland, none of whom I've ever met but who apparently got there as refugees from Eastern European who were deceived into believing that when the boat docked in Scotland, they were in America. My grandmother met them but sadly she could never reproduce the "Jewish burr." If I ever meet a dialogue coach I'm going to have to ask to hear that.

(I actually didn't even remember any of this until long after I'd made this piece; it was inspired by a silly conversation on the Apple GarageBand Discussions and made possible when someone involved in the conversation was nice enough to find me a very decent bagpipe soundfont.)

I would DEARLY love to hear this recording, if you ever make it!

really funny with that instrument.

Loved this - it's so mad & cheeky! How did you come up with such a mix?

Love, Jen

It was the result of a goofy thread in the GarageBand section of Apple's Discussion forums. (A very nice community, but Apple's stringent moderation sent me in search of a place more like this one.) Long story short, I jokingly threatened to write Hava Nagila with bagpipes, and then someone there found me the nice soundfont, so I couldn't resist. If I knew then what I know now about GB and electronic music I would have made a little more out of it, but oh well.

Thanks for this and your other kind comments!

Super Mario in a Kilt &mdash 06/11/07 - 09:31:41 AM
Magritte, this is cute. I have to ask: Are you a gamer? Because this music definately resonates the kind of music one would hear in a video game. If you haven't already, then you should check out the video game industry. This kind of music is just screaming Mario and Luigi.
