Lyrics
To Hannah
Words: Henry Lawson (1867-1922) Music: Franciscus Henri - Albert Music

Spirit girl to whom 'twas given
To revisit scenes of pain,
From the hell I thought was Heaven
You have lifted me again;
Through the world that I inherit,
Where I loved her ere she died,
I am walking with the spirit
Of a dead girl by my side.

Through my old possessions only
For a very little while,
And they say that I am lonely,
And they pity, but I smile:
For the brighter side has won me
By the calmness that it brings,
And the peace that is upon me
Does not come of earthly things.

Spirit girl, the good is in me,
But the flesh you know is weak,
And with no pure soul to win me
I might miss the path I seek;
Lead me by the love you bore me
When you trod the earth with me,
Till the light is clear before me
And my spirit too is free.

To Hannah
The fingerpicking sets a gentle tone and the synth sounds give an ethereal atmosphere. Good use of extra sounds for emphasis here and there. Velvet vocal. Beautiful work, Franc!

Beautiful. Bravo. Gentle, sympathetic melody and your vocal work is outstanding. The mood created by the arrangement suits the poem perfectly. Simply lovely work, Franc. Thanks. Take care.

Thanks so much Peter
I rediscovered Lawson at a recent concert of his work and was inspired to have a go. It was a very calming experience to visit his work.

Returned for another listen
Ballads, especially the softly sung sad ballad like this one are rare. Replaced by body commercials and the trite lyrisism of the Brill Building fellows. Truly sad.
Great job on this number! Will take a copy.

Its the history....
Lawson was a man of soul and great love and died a broken man...It shouldn't be that way but it seems inevitable.

TO HANNAH- Spirit Girl
Very nicely done Franc - and belated congratulations to Henry :) When I first started writing, I attempted to mine a little of Mr Lawson's rich vein of literature, but found it challenging to translate it into my own music. You've done just that and done a great job of it.
The haunting melody is perfect, as is the guitar track. I also enjoyed the synth chords - not so sure about the percussion loops, although they do add some xtra flavour. Having said that, the slowly panning tambourine was a nice touch.
Vocally this is excellent - I especially like the low harmony in the last verse.
Would fit seamlessly into any "Leonard Cohen does Henry Lawson" set - this is meant as a compliment.
Cheers from a little further up the coast!

THanks so much Neil
I tried very hard to avoid the "ozzie" country sound. the meter of Lawson's writing is very familiar to us and its easy to slip into the predictable..I hope I have avoided that.. Id like to say its warmer up the coast but BOM RADAR tells me it's not so keep the music hot!

Lovely!
Your vocal treatment has captured the essence of the writer's sentiments beautifully, and the haunting melody supports the atmosphere well. This has the feel of a folk ballad standard which to me means that it has that enduring quality to make people want to sing it again and again.

A choice listen and thanks for the download!

Oh, lovely...
What a tender, bittersweet song, sung with your characteristically understated manner. The composition itself is wonderful in its simplicity and you have keep the orchestration subtle and fitting with that gentle guitar. I really like the way you have let the story just unfold and sort of "tell itself" without any special adornment. This is a special song, in my opinion, and I am glad i heard it this afternoon.
