Description
A couple of levels of meaning here - the obvious is that it's about Sydney. I lived there for a long while, and although we have some family and some very old friends there still, it is no longer a place where I am happy. Cities have just become too hard for me. You can figure out the big and small alternative interpretations for your selves :)
Just me and Levi the drummer this time.

Lyrics
Swimming In Mud
© 2016 Neil Porter

It’s big and it’s dirty
Like a river in flood
Just like driving in traffic
It’s like swimming in mud
I was drowning in quicksand
I was going down slow
I’ve been swimming upstream
With nowhere to go

I was simmering slowly
Not quite boiling my blood
I stopped taking the tablets
I came down with a thud
Drowning in quicksand
I was going down slow
I’ve been swimming upstream
With nowhere to go

Chorus:
Not going back to Sydney anymore
Don’t want to visit places where I used to go before
I can do without the harbour and the locks upon my door
Ain’t going back to Sydney
Anymore

SOLO

I’ve been burning my bridges
I’m not easily led
While my heart keeps on beating
Then you’ll know I’m not dead
I was drowning in quicksand
I was going down slow
I was swimming upstream
With nowhere to go

There’s no train at the station
There’s no room at the inn
You can lose yourself
In the city of sin
If I’m drowning in quicksand
I’ll be going down slow
I’ve been swimming upstream
With nowhere to go

Bonjour Marc, et merci
We often think of you and our friends from Ougney-les-Champs. Did you get to Corse again this year? We had a short trip to the Outback around Uluru and Alice Springs, but otherwise this has been a "stay-at-home" year for us. Bonjour à Brigitte (at Lilou aussi).

Burning Bridge
Unresolved angst some more? When the bridge burns out, if ya survive the fall, it's a muddy river below.
Interesting rhythms, maybe a middle eight?
Thanks for sharing your work with us!

Thud
This is the kind of despondent music that comes out when you quit taking your meds. Get back on them!

: )

Love that line "I came down with a thud." It's so .. weighty.

Enjoyed
good to hear a new one from you Neil. Sorry to hear Sydney is not what it was...big cities all over I suspect.Funny to contrast this with my experience of returning to my old home town, (Smiling)....mind you it's a much much smaller place!!

Cool song Neil
I like how the delay effect adds to the density and thickness of the track - muddies it up a bit without adding another voice.

Swimming In Mud
Really like this outing, Neil. Quality lyrics, great arrangement and a lovely, warm mix. I really like how everything is sitting in the mix, too, especially the drums. It seems, to me, that you have moved beyond the loudness wars and have hit a very sweet spot with your mixes and mastering. And the song deserves it. Talk soon. Regards, Peter.

Such a warm sound
For such a "cold" subject. Your playing and production skills are still great, even if Sydney's not cutting it for you.

Big City Blues
Reminds me of Robbie Robertson. You have a very recognizable style and always have great time keeping. A true pro. Solo fits right in. Thanks for the tune

Am I the only one...
...whose MacJams page for this song has a suboxone link?

I continue to be impressed, Neil, with the way that your songs/recordings/mixes get simpler and simpler, and yet sound fuller and fuller and completer and completer...and chimier and chimier...

This may be about Sydney, but it sure applies to my day in the USA...

I like the guitar tones that you use these days very much...as Kevin points out, the delay brings out the space in the track...
