Description
When I recorded the first version of INSIDE THIS SKIN (http://macjams.com/song/83119) awhile back I invited the talented Vic Diesel to contribute a recorder solo for the piece. What he ended up contributing, while beautiful, just didn't fit, as the song had meanwhile developed into a bit of a rocker.

Although I was very happy with how the first version turned out, I was disappointed at the same time. I really wanted to work with the good Mr. Diesel. Then I hit on the idea of doing an altogether different version with Vic and gave him carte blanche. Thankfully he got on board without any arm twisting at all.

While waiting for his new submission I pondered what kind of keyboards or percussion I might add. However, when I finally heard his track all that went by the wayside. His FLOATING-ON-A-CLOUD-DEEP-IN-A-DREAM approach (as I like to call it) is so beautiful that it needs no other instrumentation. Indeed, my hope now is that I didn't bugger it up with my vocals! :-)

Feeling a tad stressed? Give a listen to what Vic has done with one of my favorite songs! You'll soon be chillin'...

Lyrics
INSIDE THIS SKIN

I.
Once more the music of the mornin'
stirs me in my bed.
I awake and smile to find myself
in this place again.
So I offer up a word of thanks,
for life inside this skin.

II.
I went out to get some coffee
with a dear old friend.
Did he connect with me?
Did I connect with him?
So very much eludes us,
here inside this skin.

First Chorus:
I'm afraid to look back o'er my own shoulder,
into the mist of what has already been.
My past's receding at an alarming rate!
The future's just around the bend...

Second Chorus:
The world around me
is changin' ever faster!
Or is it that I've slowed down a bit?
Perhaps someday we'll find the answers
we've been seeking;
but for now we have our myths...

III.
A meeting of the heart and mind begins
beyond the egos' din;
but communication soon breaks down,
as each one plays to win.
Sometimes it's very hard for you and I
to penetrate this skin.

IV.
Another days' end and I'm drifting
off to sleep my friends.
As I nod I stop to wonder
if we'll pass this way again.
Meanwhile I'm just “doin' time,”
alone inside this skin.

Alone inside this skin...
Alone inside this skin...
Alone inside this skin...
Alone inside this skin.

Orchestral recorders
That's what happens when you tell me to do whatever I want....

About 5 soprano recorders, mostly pushed into a a distant haze. Very few alto and tenor recorders, but 5 basses, 2 great basses, and one contra bass.

This was fun.

Coolness
I enjoyed this. It reminds me of Strawberry fields. The vocals are mixed very well. Sounds great;spacious and rich on my headphones :)

Strawberry Fields...
I told Vic the same thing when I first heard his track. To get that spaciousness you speak of I took Vic's single track, doubled it, then panned one track to the far Left and the other to the far right. Doubled my vocal as well and panned it similarly but not quite as far. Glad it worked!

Be well friend!

letting loose
quite different approach Mike. you sure made a great decision to let Victor loose with this piece.

Victor, as always you come up with great harmonizing compositions.

great job guys!

Sometimes we
gotta be brave! (He said over the sound of his knees knocking...)

I realized early on that Vic had a somewhat different vision for this piece. Being a fan of his compositions, and in awe of his playing skills, I just couldn't let the opportunity slip by.

Glad you enjoyed it bro!

Be well!

Harmony
Now that you mention harmonizing.....

This collaboration was actually a bit of a two-step. Mike gave me a bare vocal track (and guitar to hear the harmonies) and I decided to reharmonize it a little. I mean, if the vocals are based on Dmin, and I play Gmin, then you're just singing 7s and 9s and such, right? (Don't remember the exact chords, but you get the idea.) This must been going a little too far for Mike, because he re-sung the vocals based on my new harmonies.

Thanks for the compliment!

At first I tried singing
the old melody to Vic's new arrangement, but it sounded off---and not at all harmonious---to my untrained ear. I was happy to change the melody accordingly.

Hey Fred!
"carnival"... That comparison hadn't occurred to me, but as a metaphor for life it kinda works...

Thanks for the thumbs up on the lyrics.

Unusual but works really well
Lovely arrangement and I think you were right to resist the percussion!

Cheers

Unusual indeed!
I fully concur Dick. And quite outside my normal comfort zone. But I like it a lot! And yes... percussion would only have detracted from the beauty of Vic's playing.

Be well bro!

Baroque prog! I love the vibe this creates. Great arrangement. Inspired instrumentation, Vic. Sounds just great. Your vocals work so well here, too, Mike. Just a fab collab. Thanks, guys.

Many thanks Peter!
It was a very enjoyable experience for me. So different from what I'm used to doing! One can learn a lot collaborating with folks who think and play outside one's own little box.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Believe it or not
I experience the piece in much the same way. It sounds---due to my vocal I think---odd to me at the first...but becomes more and more enjoyable as it progresses. Vic is stellar throughout.

Woodwind ensemble
This is very cool. I love the concept. I'd love to see a track breakdown. How many recorders? Other sampled woodwinds? It sounds great.

Sweet
Nice vocal and lyrics Micheal! Vic was cool with the recorders, etc. Micheal you are like the Dylan that said, "One too many mornings and a thousand miles away." Life gets away from us as it moves faster and we stay still.

Beatles/Bach
I'll be happy to count those among my influences.

I was definitely
influenced by the Beatles in my background vocals. And right from the beginning I thought that Vic's orchestration sounded similar to the mellotron used in Strawberry Fields.

Good call man!
