Treading Water

Description
Found this while rummaging around in old music files. I originally recorded this back in 2011 as a simple demo with guitar and vocal. I may have posted it as well.

Anyway, I decided to spruce it up a bit. I double tracked the guitar and vox to create more space. It still sounded a little too sparse for me---especially in the middle---so I added a little percussion in the form of a shaker and cymbals, some synth-ed cello and flute, and a few sound effects. Then I set about remixing and remastering it.

So here it is. Refurbished. Spit shined, and lemon fresh! ;-)

Lyrics
TREADING WATER

I
I've loved you for a long time.
Of that you can be sure.
When I think of the years we've been apart,
it's more than I can endure.
While I wandered down life's alleys
you were always there with me;
shining brightly in my darkness,
although I could not see.

II
Now I wonder what it means:
you back in my life again.
Is there a purpose, or a goal?
Will I be left dangling without end?

With you I'm treading water.
Don't know if I'll sink or swim.
Don't know from one day to the next,
if it's me you love or him.

FIRST CHORUS:
Someone throw me out a lifeline!
You know I'm sinking fast.
Don't know how long I can stay afloat;
how much longer I can last.
I hear the Sirens wailing!
God please tie me to the mast!
Will I navigate this passageway,
or against the rocks be cast?

SECOND CHORUS:
Someone throw me out a lifeline!
You know I'm sinking fast.
Don't know how long I can stay afloat;
how much longer I can last.
I hear the Sirens wailing!
Please tie me to the mast!
Will I navigate this passageway,
or against the rocks be cast?

III
Don't know quite how to decipher
all those signals that you send;
but it'll be a death-sentence,
if you say we're “only friends.”

With you I'm treading water.
Don't know if I'll sink or swim.
Don't know from one day to the next,
if it's me you love or him.

Don't know from one day to the next,
if it's me you love,
---me you love or him.

Soulful Ballad
Yer a troubadour Michael. You may as well make peace with the thing. You got it bad. That a great thing too!

In truth I'm schizoid Daug!
I'm 1/2 troubadour and 1/2 rocker. Ha ha...

I've always been a sucker for a sad song though...

Be well!

Spit shined
Like the string and flute arrangement, the right emotion in the singing adds to the clean guitar well done

Many thanks Tim!
I wanted to be careful not to transgress the unwritten "less-is-more" rule, so I tried to keep the further instrumentation to a minimum. Glad it worked for you.

A very heartfelt song Micheal. Raw honesty at is finest. Has the person you wrote it for heard it?

Careful Dean...
This is actually a fantasy.

What if when I proposed to her Diana had said "No," and we went our separate ways---only to run into each other a couple decades later? How would I FEEL standing before her once again---the rejected one---still longing for her?

This is intended as kind of a "It's A Wonderful Life" in reverse. It HAS to be in reverse, because she didn't say "no," and as a result my life IS wonderful.

But what if she hadn't said "yes"? OWWW!

Ha ha... I guess I should have put all this in the Song Description!

Be well friend!

Troubadour time again. Good! I like the direct but poetic lyrics and the classic folk feel of the vocals and guitar. The "fill out" works very well, too. Nice one, Mike. Thanks.

Hi Vic...
I suppose this could have worked with just vox and guitar like "Explorers," but I'd have had to edit down the mid-section by the equivalent of a measure. Seemed better this way. Perhaps because I was just coming off of my collab with Vic Diesel! Anyway, I like how this turned out. No regrets this time. Glad you like it too! :-)

Be well bro!
