Description
this thing kept growing over time. a whole lotta tracks. originally i was not going to put any vocals on this. however adding more guitar solos seem to be over doing it. the lyrics i wrote for a hard rock song i recorded over a year ago, but they didn't really fit the mood of that song... so that song sits. back in mid november of 2015 spokane, where i live had a massive chinese latern festival that ran all month in the city center park. incredibly strong winds came through knocking out power and toppling over hundreds of trees leaving over 200,000 people without power. i was out for 8 days with just a lot of candles for light and barley any heat. as for the latern displays, they pretty much got trashed.

Lyrics
Lights Out

entertained by the pretty lights
dragons and zebras light up the night
laterns and animals such a sight
surreal images brought to life
stop lights, warning lights and neon signs
guiding victims in the dark of night
night life, secret lives under street lights
when the lights go out… isolation

candlelight, late night, flickering flames
it’s all I have until the next day
shadows shift in dark corners
the final flame burns to fade away

This
had some intense spots! Great balance between intensity and subdued. Sounds like a song with *textures*. For once I didn't mind a bumpy ride. The ending left you wanting more.

i think you described it perfectly. i went for each section being a bit different but with the same 4 chords.

Big bright sound. Evocative lyrics. Complex arrangement tied together well. Impressive work, Vic. Eight days without power must have presented a few challenges?

a lot of the time when i practice playing guitar I'll hit on some cool riff and then think i should of recorded that. luckily i was playing through a looper effect pedal so i was able to replay it over and over (the harmonized guitar section) until i had it, the rest of the some has a simple 4 chord structure to build from.

8 days - i never want to go through that again. the house maintained a mid 40 degree fairenheit temperature. i never knew a acoustic guitar neck could feel so freezing.

Out of adversity... Multi-layered goodness, Vic. The lyrics are evocative and the music captivating. Lovely guitar tones, as always. Mixing it must have been a challenge, but you rose to it easily. Fine post. Thanks.

there is about 30 tracks on this. some might not be so obvious like the 4 harmony guitars. it did take some time to dial in the mix. but i was slow about it. a little nudge here and there... give a few days break and some more tweeks.

As they said...
...so many layers. A very "dense" number, Vic, with a lot going on behind the scenes. Takes several listens to hear it all. That nylon guitar solo around 2:23ff is perfectly placed and just leaps out of the whole with a sweet intensity. There's sure an ominous quality about this whole track. (Are you channeling Harald Dastis — Narad? This would fit into the "epic train" scenario quite well.) Ambitious post and so well conceived and performed.

of course i don't have the keyboard/synth expertise as Harald... but if i could it would surely take me a different direction that would be fun.

Eventfully effective
A tale with fitting moods. It must have been somewhat surreal. Enjoyed the song and the melody to the music. Another fantastic tune by you.

As usual, your mastery of the six-stringer is fantastic. Both solos and accompanying work are great. Enjoyed the song too.

Now that mix. You start with some epic sounds, but then use a very thin sounding drum for the vocal part. That contrast is just too big for me. It's too big a shift in character of the song. Around the 3:25 mark you combine that drum and the dense backing sounds and it really feels incongruous to me. Same for the guitar sound at 3:40 actually.

Thanks Victor for your thoughts
i had been on the fence about the drums in question. one side of the fence had me thinking no drums. i think i may have gotten use to it in the end. original i did have a basic drum loop for a click track. it sounded like to much was going on for the bulk of the song. someday i might revisit it.

Sorry I'm late to the party!
...haven't had a lot of online time.

Really nice Vic. Really like the spooky "secret agent" guitar chords, and those leads are freakin' righteous!

Appropriately CHILLING (given your liner notes...)

Be well bro!

Hey Mike
nah not late by a long shot. actually just 4 chords. Em, Dm, Bm & Am. probably the least and most basic chords I've done on a song. there is a guitar track that is just harmonics and raised on the vibrato bar, that does give it a spooky sound.

A heavy trip
So much going on here yet it all holds together so well.

I like the changes in texture and feel.

Yeah, heavy indeed.

the whole idea was to change each section in some way. i wanted to see how that would work out... the challenge was to keep it somewhat short otherwise. i had a lot of other variations in mind while working on it.

Storms Hurt
Strange that we should both post songs about a storm at the same time although they were a long way apart. The storms that is. Most have been something with all of those lanterns blowing away. I can hear the chaos and power of the song in your strong arrangement. Really good job of mating sound with lyric!

You are
so unique. I thoroughly enjoyed your playing. I wish I had learned. But, I never would've been the rocker you are. Fantastic, Vic. Thank you.
