Description
The first song I've written for a while. I hope you like it!

The art work ("House of Pere Pilon") is a Van Gogh painting - I recently went to an exhibition of his work and love it.

Lyrics
Verse 1

A few careless actions, a few careless words
I never intended they’d ever be heard
I tried to tell you what matters the most
But actions spoke louder than words

Chorus

First night alone and it doesn’t seem real
The silence just pounds in my ears
A prison of freedom has captured my soul
The ghosts of the darkness are out on patrol
So much of life that I now can't control
And all that was once safe has gone

Verses 2 & 3

I hear the phone ring and I hope that it’s you
Rehearsing how I’ll tell you my point of view
Listening to hear for your keys in the door
For a midnight rendezvous

The silence surrounds me it’s filling my head
I wanted wonderful, but got this instead
No consolation in everyday sounds
I’m walking on rocky ground

Chorus

First night alone and it doesn’t seem real
The silence just pounds in my ears
A prison of freedom has captured my soul
The ghosts of the darkness are out on patrol
So much of life that was young now seems old
And all that was once safe has gone

Instrumental

Chorus

First night alone and it doesn’t seem real
The silence just pounds in my ears
A prison of freedom has captured my soul
The ghosts of the darkness are out on patrol
So much of life that was young now seems old
And all that was once safe has gone

Coda

First night alone and it doesn’t seem real
And all that was once safe has gone

I stared
at the painting as I listened and almost thought I felt a breeze. Matching atmospheres of art and music.

The painting
I was looking for some "sad man" art work, but this painting did seem to have a special atmosphere to it. I'm pleased you enjoyed it, Sammy. Thanks for stopping by!

Its hard to come up a song these days...
BUT YOU DID WELL! Thoughtful lyrics and a gentle ballad. Van Gogh is inspirational and easier to write than say (for some)

Yes, songs are a bit harder to find than they once were. I get it done if I just give it some time and start writing something - anything - and finally there appears some shape. Devoting the time amongst life's busyness is the challenge. Thanks for the comments!

First Night Alone
Mellow melancholy. Lovely stuff. The music flows like a gentle stream and the lyrics carry the story ever onwards. Lovely warm vocal and arrangement. I do like it! Talk soon.

I tried to keep things relatively simple with plugins - I tend to find that the more I try to improve things the worse they become! However, Ozone is still my good friend... Thanks for the comments - I always appreciate your thoughts! See you soon.

First Night Alone
excellent Philip.
everything works together perfectly here. the guitar riff is a great setup intro to the lyrics. cool guitar playing. Is this the first time you used a tele? at least i can't remember you using one that is.

Glad you liked it, Vic. I do usually usually the Gibson Howard Roberts, but also like the Fender cut. It's been in the background on a few songs, but not used for a lead break for a while. Thanks for stopping by!

What's not to love?
Van Gogh was thoroughly unique among artists over all time. I understand the lost feeling behind these lyrics. What a fine performance. Singing, for you, is as natural as breathing. Loved it. Thank you.

Contrasts
I especially like the lyrics, and specifically the contrasting lines like "a prison of freedom" and silence (usually a void) "filling my head." SUch a simple yet powerful song of loss and longing, exquisitely sung in your characteristically-mannered way. Another beautiful gem just about perfectly formed and delivered with a certain honesty.

Lovely recording Philip
Very smooth - a really complete production. I'm a sucker for a B3 as you know, and so, I'd love to hear a change from the strings setting to a B3 setting. Just my taste of course :)
Cheers from up the coast.

Thanks
Glad you liked it, Neil. I agree about the B3 sound - I use it when I can but as I'm no keyboard player it sometimes just sounds amateurish. I use the long notes of the lalaria pad synth because it's easy to play and I quite like the way it fills things out. I might have to send the file north next time to ask for help from someone more accomplished in that area than I am!

Ghosts of the Darkness
i've seen a few of those Phillip. Your musicianship is impeccable as usual. Love the little guitar runs that make up the intro and then show up from time to time. The change in tempo from the rolling verses to those runs is very nice. Your vocal is very relaxed with a great tone that is so easy to listen to. No fault here. Another great one.

Engaging to the end
A plaintive lament that works right to the end.......this one is not for the kids.....it's for us old enough to appreciate the lyrics. Nice song

Oh, The Irony!!
As I listen to the "loneliness" of this song, I am texting my wife, who has turned on all the lights of our apartment, because she is home alone (our daughter is at a sleep over and I'm at work on Hurricane Duty), all by herself for the first time. I'm sending her the link to this song so that she may relate to it, and not be so lonely.
Great Tune!!!

From the first notes...
That's a terrific guitar sound, and the left/right parts sound great in headphones...

I love the first verse in particular; it's tight, and says a lot in relatively few words...and leaves a little bit unsaid...

Have been here. A story that I am sure many can relate to. The lead break and picking are just right. I think you could try less reverb on the vocal to see what that would sound like. It is such an intimate song that I would like to feel you were closer telling the story. Thanks for the share..
