Ships In The Night (w Sam D)

Description
This song is loosely based on some thoughts I had as I flew home from Rome to Melbourne via Dubai earlier in the year.

On the Rome to Dubai leg I wondered how close we were flying to Syria and how incongruous it was that I flying high in the sky in comfort with a drink in my hand while down below countless Syrian civilians have had their lives, livelihoods and homes smashed in a brutal civil war that, at first, was ignored by Western powers and since seems to have developed into a superpower arm wrestle rather than an international humanitarian peace/rescue mission.

Over 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives and 11 million have been made homeless… 11 million!!

Back in Melbourne I had a chord progression I was fiddling with and I was searching round for a theme.

“Ships In The Night” popped up (given my nautical bent) and I immediately thought back to the feelings on the plane. This song is the result. I "borrowed" bits and pieces of some lines from quotes and poems by Baruch, Masefield and Wadsworth Longfellow to tell the story :-)

I knew straight away that this needed a proper arrangement and I (again) put the call out to Sam and he (again) graciously accepted :-)

Peter Bowen: Melody and lyrics, lead vocal, acoustic guitar (PRS Angelus) and lead guitar (G&L ASAT Special).
Sam Dixon: Background vocals, bass, synth, midi drums and midi piano, mix and master.

I said it last time and I mean it, it is an honour to work with Sam. Thanks, my friend.

See what you think, MJ.

Regards,

Peter.

Lyrics
Ships In The Night - Peter Bowen (July 2017) Capo 4

Harmonics [Am... C Em Am]

[Am] The dark days of [G] winter
[Am] Lonely sea and the [G] sky
[Am] I’m watching and [G] waiting, wondering [Am] why? [Am.... C Em Am G]

Where are we headed?
Who’ll find the North Star?
The thunder comes rumbling from near and from far [Am..... Am C Am G]

[F] The sirens are [G] calling out
[C] But we’re tied to the [Am] mast
[F] Bound by the [G] sins of the [Am] past [Am.... C Em Am G]

[F] The pages of [G] history
[C] Have been set [Am] alight
[F] And we’re just passing like [G] ships in the [Am] night… [Am]

A cry in the darkness
Silence thrown in return
Do they have to die while we watch Rome burn? [Am.... C Em Am G]

Flat earth fanatics
Armageddon allege
Are we duly condemned to sail off the edge? [Am..... Am C Am G]

[F] The sirens are [G] calling out
[C] But we’re tied to the [Am] mast
[F] Bound by the [G] sins of the [Am] past [Am.... C Em Am G]

[F] The pages of [G] history
[C] Have been set [Am] alight
[F] And we’re just passing like [G] ships in the [Am] night…

[Dm] In this ocean of life, [Am] we’re all trying to float
[Dm] We’ve come in different ships but [E] we’re all in the same boat

Lead over verse then [Am..... Am C Am G]

[F] The sirens are [G] calling out
[C] But we’re tied to the [Am] mast
[F] Bound by the [G] sins of the [Am] past [Am.... C Em Am G]

[F] The pages of [G] history
[C] Have been set [Am] alight
[F] And we’re passing like [G] ships in the [Am] night
[F] (Just) passing like [G] ships in the [Am] night [Am.... C Em Am G]
[F] Passing like [G] ships....... in the [Am] night
[Am... C Em Am]

Ships In The Night
Impressive! Sharp chord progression and tight playing. Smooth vocal with warm harmonies. Good to hear the G&L get a run! Sam's additions are very tasteful - they add something when needed without cluttering the overall sound. I like it a lot!

Without cluttering
Thanks, Philip. I think this song deserved a strong arrangement to help get its message across and Sam, as you noted, provided a rock solid rhythm section and some very tasty adds. The "without cluttering" is a salient observation, too. I enjoy working with him. Talk tonight. Thanks.

As
I told you personally, "always a pleasure." You're inadvertently making me pick up the bass and practice more, and I needed some incentive. Even my one finger synth playing's getting better. haha

Hit the nail on the head
Thanks, Sam. Philip hit the nail on the head in his observations above. My songs sounds more complete and professional when you are along for the ride. I appreciate it. And I will come a'knocking in the not too distant future I'm sure, so keep that bass practice up :-) Talk care.

A higher plane
Thanks, KC. The song was inspired by what is happening in Syria but it has ended up being a more of a universal message as well (Somalian famine/civil war, climate change, Trump, etc..). Glad you liked it. Sam takes my song to a higher plane. We appreciate you stopping by. Take care.

Beautiful Collaboration
It is truly a pleasure to hear something this good and true. Sammy you really made it into a beautiful piece of music after Peter had created the bedrock lyrics and progressions and vocals. I too have had many thoughts about war as you had Peter. And my country is the unfeeling aggressor who seemingly has no empathy for the destruction they bestow with their war from above and sale of arms to the same people we call enemy in one country and friend in another.

Those of us who have lived such lives of comfort and privilege cannot really conceive of what it must be like to have your home and neighborhoods destroyed by explosives, fire and bullets.

Luck of the draw...
Thanks for the very kind words, Tom. I appreciate them, as I am sure Sam does, too. The world can be a callous, brutal place and in many cases it is just the luck of the draw where you are born (and in what year) as to whether you have a generally good life or experience great suffering. Empathy is often lacking for sure, especially when money and power is involved. Glad you liked the brew we served up. Take care.

What a pity
that such tragedies unfold and we can do nothing about it.

You've caught this very well. Excellent lyrics and beautifully performed.

A fine collaboration.

Political will...
Thanks, Dick. Yes, tragedies keep occurring round the world and, for all our wealth and technology, we don't seem to have the political will or the moral fibre to stop them. The current famine in northern Somalia is a case in point. Glad you liked what Sam and I put together. Take care.

Great Collab Mates Bravo!
Thanks for keeping the standards high Peter!
I am so happy you are healthy and contributing to the community.
This tune sounds effective, the arrangement is well in the pocket and conforms with expectations.
All good things for your style, keeping Sam around to flesh out your ideas works well here.
You have this pop cliche thing covered...Perhaps you should push yourself beyond this point? There might be amazing things beyond where your at here? Come on, give it a try!

Trademarks...
Thanks for your listen, kind words and thoughts, Daug. Fair point re me having a recognisable style. Wouldn't agree that "pop cliché" is a good descriptor, though, but that is by the by. I suppose in the end we all have a style that we tend to feel most comfortable and dwell in. No-one can mistake your music for anyone but Daug. Vic, Paul, Kenta, Harald and KC's styles (amongst many others) are probably all similarly trademarked. I'm guessing I could listen to any post from the people who regularly contribute at MJ and know who it is immediately without seeing any other information. I grew up listening to, and preferring, JT, Joni, Jackson Browne, etc, over Bowie, Black Sabbath, Zappa, et al. probably because of their, and my, affinity with the acoustic guitar. I guess writing songs using an acoustic guitar as the main driver (especially if tend towards finger style) and also writing them so that they can be performed as a solo singer/songwriter tends to lead me down the path I am on. I will try writing a song using my electrics for a band and see if that produces a noticeably different outcome. Thanks, again for your thoughts. Take care.

Style points...
From an arrangers point of view, how would you produce yourself?
I know the finger style guitar is the tool you prefer, but what would happen if you chose to write without finger style accompaniment?
Maybe in a style like Dylan or Lennon? I think there might be some equally great songs inside you waiting for you to turn the style knob a bit.
Distinctive guitar styles, not style. Makes sense? So the limitations of the current approach gets a bit of a stretch...
Just to make it fair, I will try out your template.

Powerful song...
Inspired lyrics, VERY tasteful, understated backing arrangement. Such a pleasure to hear such a well-designed and well-mastered song. A great collaboration, in my opinion. (And there's no need to branch out. There simply are not enough songs that deliver such an honest and poignant message so compellingly.)
