Playing With the Rain

Description
When I wrote this song and started singing it, it was a pretty, ethereal type of song. I never felt it was finished and never recorded it. This time when I tried to record my voice was no good. My throat was constricted and full of junk. But I kept on singing determined to at least get through with it even if it wasn't going to be any good. And then toward the last I started improvising a new ending. I hated it at first but it has grown on me as I listened to it. Considering the type of rain we have had lately from Hurricane Harvey, which is still going on, perhaps this captures the feel of violence and destruction that rain can sometimes bring.

Lyrics
When the rain comes right at sundown, it makes a lonesome sound
And the thunder is off in the distance, and no one else is around
I pick up this old guitar and start to strum along
And it starts to sound like some old forgotten song, it starts to sound like some old forgotten song
From a long time ago

You can still hear the birds cry, through the strumming of the rain
The water hits the puddles like the notes in a crazy dream
And I start to play in harmony and the notes flow across the air

And I'm playing with the rain, playing with the rain
the water is coming down and I'm playing with the rain

Your Improvisation Worked
Sounds like you and your guitar are good friends, bronco! I enjoy your tune.

guitar
Yes my guitar has been there for me when everything else was going down the creek. A good friend who will always talk to me when I approach it the right way.

Playing With The Rain
Emotive, world-weary vocal style (although I might have edited out that throat clearing). Clean guitar playing. It works well, Tom.

Rough, ragged and throat clearing
Just pretend it is a cut off of one of my bootleg albums. Which considering I don't have any albums at all maybe a little strange but in keeping with the times.

Mmmmm...
Nice work Tom... Melody reminds me just a little of America's "Ventura Highway." Just a little. Really fine guitar work herein, and I always appreciate your vocals.

Be well bro!

Major seventh chords is what you hear that reminds you of America. Don't think I stole any of their melody however. If any artist were to sue for stealing it would be JJ Cale. It was his song Magnolia that was the inspiration.

Rain
The rain wasn't too bad in Austin, not? Did your power go off? Mine was out for almost 2 whole days.

I like the raw sound of your vocals here. It works very well with the sparse sound of this song.

And no, it doesn't sound like America at all. Ok, a little at the 2 minute mark because of the Maj7 chords.

Rain It Did
I was very fortunate and had not power outage or flooding. Not even a large branch knocked down. I'm fighting asthma for the first time in my life so I have no idea what my voice is going to do anymore. I guess that is why I have been posting so much lately because I wanted to get some songs down while I was still able. But who knows I might still be doing this ten years from now.

Honest
is the word that comes to mind when i hear this. A really good song and the vocals just make it so, well...honest sounding. Good work, cheers Mark

honest
Thanks Mark. Since I only write for myself and have no expectations other than a good feeling that I created something, honest is what comes out.

rain
I must say that I hate rain, especially in autumn here in the netherlands it rains a lot, I can't stand those dark days filled with rain, always make me feel depressed.
Good that your guitar gave you some consolation...
a fine song
I enjoyed it

emotional rain
KC, I grew up in the state of Louisiana which also gets a great deal of rain and know what you mean about depressing sometimes. Now living in Texas on the edge of a desert I understand the flip side of that and how the rain becomes a special spiritual reaffirmation of life. In both cases, rain can sure influence the way you feel.

"world-weary vocal style..."
Absolutely. Minimalist song "dripping" with honesty and sort-of longing and tired-out feeling throughout. I think your guitar style on this song is so very beautiful and so understated...Just beautiful. What a pleasure to hear such a soul-filled song that is so excellently performed.

Way I Feel
Paul, I suppose longing and being tired, which is the way I feel these days, comes out in my music as a result. I am happy that in this case it seems to have given a little enjoyment to my listeners. I appreciate your giving my music a secone chance.

rough voice
I heard the same thing after recording that the roughness actually kind of fit with the song which is why I kept it and posted. Perhaps I should wait until I am congested and breathing rough before I do my next vocal, LOL.

raw and unplugged
Well that's how a lot of people hear my music. I just do it the only way I know how and hope it floats a boat or two when all is said and done. Glad you liked it.

I love to play guitar. I have been writing songs for many years and have a large catalog by this time. Songwriting is easy. Writing great songs is hard! Born in Louisiana and live in Texas. I grew up on Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky, Little Richard ... [see more]
