Description
I've been in the same cover band with friends for over 15 years.
Anything from the Beatles to Blondie, Spencer Davis to Shania Twain.
We do 8 - 10 gigs a year (we are grateful of the time in between to recover...), have a bit of fun and try to add at least two new songs to our repertoire a gig.
We occasionally throw in one of my originals, too.
I wrote this for the band. This is the demo I sent them.
Straight ahead rock.
All me with Logic Drummer. G&L ASAT Special and Gibson SG bass.
See what you think.
Thanks,
Peter.

Lyrics
Losing You – Peter Bowen (September 2017)
[Em,,,] [D] [Em,,,] [G] [Em,,,] [D] [Em]
[Em] Talking to myself again
[D] Mumbling out aloud
But no matter what, I can't convince [Em] myself [G][D]
[Em] The train of thought I'm riding on
Is [D] running off the rails
And it can't find a way to right [Em] itself
[Pre-chorus]
[D] I'm a long way down a [Em] one-way track
[D] Signals have been [Em] crossed
[D] My ticket is marked [Em] "no return"
[C] Despite the gold [D] emboss
[Chorus]
I'm [Em] losing you (losing you)
I'm [D] losing you (losing you)
And I just can't fan the [Em] flames (fan the flames)
I'm [Em] losing you (losing you)
I'm [D] losing you (losing you)
Things will never be the [Em] same [D] [Em,,,] [G] [Em,,,] [D] [Em]
[Em] Saw you just the other day
[D] On the runaround
Holding hands and laughing with some [Em] guy [G][D]
You [Em] won't return my messages
I’m [D] on the outward bound
And you can’t find a way to say [Em] goodbye
Repeat Pre-chorus
Lead over Verse chords
[Bridge]
[G] A connection has been [D] lost
And I must pay the [Em] cost
You've left me standing in the [C] rain
[G] A love has lost its [D] gloss
A heart is being [Em] tossed
And things will never be the [C] same...
Repeat Chorus x2
[Outro]
[Em,,,] [D] [Em,,,] [G] [Em,,,] [D] [Em]

Losing You
This will work well with the band - the right tempo, rocky feel. Plenty of scope for harmony singing. I like the flow of the guitar solo, too. The patrons at Monty will be very happy!

Rock 101
Thanks, Philip. Yes, it should fit in okay. We would probably even play it a touch faster live. I'm hoping have a male/female backing team singing harmonies will really lift the chorus. The solo is short and sweet but it does link well to the bridge. Not next week but hopefully in December :-) Talk soon.

i didn't know....
that you had a band... cool.

Peter, I really like this. and yes, this would blend in perfectly with popular tunes played live.

Strutting a stage
Thanks, Vic. Yes, I've been in pickup bands longer than I care to remember. One thing about being a teacher at big schools was that there was always a music department to call on to get members :-) Now I'm retired but there are two still-working teachers, a school office staff member and two parents of kids from my last school in the current iteration of our cover band. We all still enjoy fronting up and strutting a stage. Pity I ache all over for the next couple of days..., but it's worth it. And yes, I think the song should slot seamlessly into a set somewhere. Take care.

Ah cover bands.....
It is only recently in my life that I am not drumming in one. Has a Dire Straits vibe. That's a complement! Well done! Is that the usual vocal mic you use?

Vocal tricks...
Thanks, Freddy. Two things with the vocal - I used the Shure Beta 58a I use on stage, single-take and I placed it using Logic's Binaural Pan (right-click on the pan button) setting to try and make it sound "live". It certainly stands out in the mix. Take care.

losing you
definitely a good song for the band to play
you work the same way as I do, making demo's on my own and then try them out with my friends...
A good song, great vocals
very much enjoyed

The pitch...
Thanks, KC. I think it has enough get up and go to work between well-known covers. It's always interesting pitching your own songs to your friends. I appreciate you stopping by. Take care.

Straight ahead
Very solid song.

I'm kind of amused listening to the drum vs rhythm guitar and bass. Does Logic drummer adapt the bass drum to follow the bass guitar? It does a pretty plausible job of staying in the spirit of you bass part without slavishly doubling it. Oh, the tambourine is annoying. I'd mute that one. Or program a better one.

Drummer
Thanks, Vic. I think for this song I set the tempo and key, laid out an arrangement track and then asked Drummer to pre-fill. I trialled various Rock Drummers and presets until I got a feel I thought would work (Logan - Firebird). I then lay down the two guitar tracks and the bass track using the drums as the "click-track", tweaking them a bit along the way. It all just seemed to work pretty well without a lot of effort. I will look at the tambourine. I can certainly choose a few different rhythm patterns for it and, if I bothered to, I can separate the drum kit/percussion out to single tracks (which I hadn't on this occasion) and EQ it, etc, solo,..). I appreciate your time and thoughts. Take care.

from spencer davis to shania twain
i think i read that book.

I liked this and I think a full band would make it sound even better. At first I liked the flange on the guitar but after a while I thought maybe it would sound better without it. Also occurred to me that this kind of tune is perfect for a 12 string acoustic.

Flange
Thanks, Craig. To flange or not to flange :-) Yes, until I get to work this up with the band the tone of the guitars will be fluid. A 12-string could be cool. We are busy preparing for a gig this Friday so we won't around to looking at it for a couple of weeks. I appreciate your listen and thoughts. Take care.

Hey Maurice, great to hear from you. I really appreciate your comments. A mash of the Eagles and Dire Straits can't be all bad :-) Thanks. Take care.

Losing You
A departure from the acoustic sound I'm use too. The song is well written and I seriously like it. I think of how the Hounds would jam this and if Donnie (drummer) played it there would be more cymbals being played. This is a song that needs the crashes to be more varied. Also, when you do the lead put an effect on it really make it stand out! maybe double the track and pan one far left and one far right. Add a different effect on one or change the EQ. I haven't been around for a while but I had to get my 2 cents in. I really do like the songwriting.

Happy
Thanks, Stan. I appreciate your input. I will look at beefing up the cymbals and highlighting the guitar solo more. Happy to have your 2 cents worth any day. It would be cool if the 'Hounds did give it a try sometime. You guys still gigging regularly? Take care.

Hounds
Hi Peter, Yes the Hounds have been quite busy. We have done our last gig Saturday night and are now moving towards our yearly winter recording sessions. Maybe we will give this tune a try if it's all right with you.

More than happy
More than happy for the 'Hounds to give it a go if you are so inclined. Take it in any direction you want. No issues on my part at all. It would be cool. Thanks.

"Straight ahead" indeed!
Good stuff my man! Jaunty rhythm reminds me a bit of "Sultans Of Swing." Really like the vocal delivery of these rather poignant lyrics. The sparse lead soloing is tasty. Nice production over all.

Be well friend!

Hope you have more luck ........
..... writing for your band than I do Peter. This is good. You seem to have made some progress with Drummer - very tight drum/bass thing happening here.
A full band live version should work really well.
Cheers,
Neil

Logan
Hi Neil. Yeah, I know what you mean. I have pitched several songs to the band over time. Two have become semi-regular. I am hoping this will be a third. And yes, Logan seemed to hit just the right groove with this after some tweaks and I just filled in the blanks with the bass, trying not to overdo it like most guitarists :-) Take care.

A minor key tune that rocks...
Peter, this is a really nice song...The recording comes across with impact even on my little MacBook Pro speakers...I like the guitar tone, both rhythm and lead...You did a nice job singing it, as well...

The four chord song
Thanks, Ed. I actually set out to write this as a four chord song after listening to multiple J. J. Cale CDs in the car one day and marvelling at how he could get away with it. Turns out you can! :-) I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

Fishing again 😊
No problems, Sam. I hope the new job is going well. Thanks for your advice. I have fiddled a fair bit with TGW but can’t really get the drums at the beginning to sound any better. I am away fishing til next Monday so don’t expect an update any time soon. Talk soon.

Keeps me young but...
Thanks, Paul. Straight ahead rock has its place. And yes, we all still really enjoy playing live. It keeps us young until load out at the end after midnight and the aches and pains kick in :-) Take care.

Losing You
Cool tune, I particularly like the the backup vocals. The backup vocals could easily follow the pitch suggestions of the lead vocal; that they don't is interesting and at first I wasn't sure about the extended second backup vocal phrase, but it quickly grew on me. As at least Loob has mentioned vocal issue, to me sounds kind of "paper-y/flat/thin" through my built-in laptop speakers, if that makes any sense. Not so much that it actually damages the listening experience. Would be cool to see a video of your band playing it live!

Tweaked
Thanks for the kind words and suggestions re this. The BGVs should work well with some input from our female vocalist. And I agree, I have struggled to get the lead vocal to sit nicely in the mix. I have since tweaked it further and given it more reverb which has filled it out a bit. Our band is going to play the song next week at a gig so it will be interesting to see how it is received. If there ends up being some video footage I will post it. Take care.
