Ariadne's Thread

Description
Tragically, these days the classics go virtually untaught, so for some an explanation of the theme may be in order.

An ancient Greek myth tells the story of King Minos, his lovely daughter Ariadne, and a terrible and blood-thirsty half-man/half-beast called the Minotaur, who lived in a huge cavernous labyrinth.

Many a brave soul had entered the labyrinth with a view to slaying the beast, but invariably ended up getting hopelessly lost in the maze, and ultimately falling prey to the Minotaur.

Enter Theseus, who agrees to try his hand at this deadly task.

Meanwhile, Ariadne had fallen madly in love with Theseus and worried for his safety. She gave him a huge ball of thread which he was to gradually unwind as he proceeded into the labyrinth.

Long story short, Theseus succeeds in slaying the monster, and---thanks to Ariadne's ball of thread---is able to find his way back out of the maze. There's more to the tale, but this will have to suffice.

I like the thought of Ariadne's thread as a metaphor of a good woman's love, and its salutary effect on her man's sanity. So now you know... :-)

This song is a bit of an experiment. While always remaining true to my folk-rock and classic-rock roots, I occasionally like to get a bit out of my own comfort zone.

I wanted to combine a Phil Collins influenced beat, and some Robert Fripp-ish lead soloing, with my usual roaring about on the guitars, and strained caterwauling.

The reason I went with Midi for the bass on this one is that, about a week ago, I semi-crushed my right hand at the wrist in the hinge of a friend's closing electric garage door opener. (What a DOOFUS!) The palm of my hand still has some swelling, and I have numbness and tingling in two of my fingers. Anyway, although it's healing up rather rapidly I didn't think I'd be able to manage playing live bass. The Midi track sounds pretty good to me... Critical comments thereon are certainly welcome.

C'est las vie!

Anyway, I hope you folks enjoy this one.

Be well all!

Lyrics
ARIADNE'S THREAD

I
In moments of dark solitude
...my own reflections' vacant gaze,
---echoes of my inner dialogue---
produce a blinding haze.

II
The heart is like a labyrinth;
full of twists and turnings.
---So easy to veer from the path;
get caught in aimless circling.

CHORUS:
Your love is like Ariadne's thread;
leads my heart out of the maze.
Helps me find my way
back home
once again.

BRIDGE:
Like shredded paper in a whirlwind;
My mind is spinnin' round and round.

But when I'm in your arms,
I am free from harm.
Both feet on solid ground...

III
Like an explorer of the underground,
lost in the caverns of remorse;
or a stranger in a strange land;
thrown from his horse...

CHORUS:
Your love is like Ariadne's thread;
leads my heart out of the maze.
Helps me find my way
back home.

cool drum setup here! the chord progression has some cool moments. the vocal lines have a touch of psychedelia, especially the effect piece. the guitar solos also has that touch of psychedelia. very cool tune Mike!

Thanks Vic!
An immense amount of work went into those midi drums, and don't let's talk about the bass! (BTW, the bass has been brought up in the mix on the master...) I drew on the Moodies, Genesis, and King Crimson (think "Starless") for different aspects of this one.

Glad you like it bro!

Be well!

Nice work
digging the Frippertronic lead. I like how you structured the drum pattern. Wondering if you tried adding a little dark reverb, with a touch of overdrive to fatten it up a little in the mix. Very cool track - shows a lot of care and dedication. In high school, I was in the Greek Society. Really enjoyed our readings.

Hi Kevin!
Glad you like it!

RE the drum mix: It's painstakingly self-constructed midi. (Took me roughly twelve hours!) I ran it through the Indie Kit setting in Logic Pro X, and then through a Space Designer reverb setting called Drum Booth One. Apart from that I just centered the track in the mix and added a Directional Mixer to widen its space.

Good to see you around here again bro!

Great idea for a song and you have produced the goods, Mike. Fine lyrics. I like the whole vibe of the song, too. Drums work well. You can tell lots of care has been put into them. The restrained guitar soloing has wonderful tone and suits the song perfectly. Hope the hand improves quickly. Thanks. Take care.

Thank you Peter!
RE the lead guitar tone: I was thinking of the first part of King Crimson's "Starless." Didn't try to reproduce it exactly, but took it as inspiration.

The hand is healing, but more slowly than I would prefer. :-(

Midi bass works! Top heavy mix, but it works for me. Cool echo/fade/phaser effects on vocals, maybe the highlight of the piece for me. Nice tonal choice on lead, kind of bridges the rhythm guitar and vocal. A cool rhythmic surprise here, and wow those lead guitar harmonies. The piece is a fine length, but it also could have easily gone on longer for me. A little trancelike I guess.

Hi'ya Noah!
"Top heavy mix." I agree. On the master I have brought the bass forward and corrected that somewhat. Can't bring the bottom out as much as I'd like to though. They're a lot of effects going on and I don't want to muddy the mix. RE the lead guitar harmonies. In that spot I copied a section of the lead onto another track, and used a pitch corrector to raise the tone a 5th. Made for a nice sonic emphasis there I think.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Be well friend!

Fine work Mike
Love the lyrics, the ideas and the almost ambient feel you've got going.

Guitar sounds good (doing pretty good with a gammy hand!)

Cheers

Dick

Mr. Langford!
"gammy"? On this side of the pond we say "gimpy." Ha ha...

I can play slower chord progressions well enough right now. Faster leads are kind of tricky for me because of residual swelling and numbness. So I was grateful I didn't have to zoom along on that lead solo! Anyway, sometimes slow and steady wins the raise. (Ask any tortoise!)

I appreciate the thumbs up!

Be well bro!
