Description:
For this song, I return to my classical roots, in a song consisting solely of vocals.

The creation of “Tristezza,” in a way, was an unplanned journey. An abandoned instrumental composition left behind a few lines of verse, in Italian, that I put to a melody ad-lib, after an unfruitful recording session. It sat for weeks and then another spur-of-the-moment recording session realized the harmonies, again sung unrehearsed.

Subsequent ‘fixes’ of the vocal parts followed—mostly errors in translation that were so kindly corrected by Sil-VER.
Thank you, Sil-VER!
Any errors in pronunciation are mine.

Thank you to those of you who 'previewed' this piece and encouraged me to post it when I was hesitant. You know who you are. Your friendship and support are so greatly appreciated.

Lyrics:
Tristezza

Concedi amore al mio cuore ferito.
Gioia alla mia anima stanca,
E alla mia mente, pace

Dammi gioia,
Dammi amore
Dammi consolazione
Dammi pace.

* * * * *

Sadness

Grant love to my wounded heart,
Joy to my weary soul,
And to my mind, peace.

Give me joy.
Give me love.
Give me consolation.
Give me peace.

Echoes of Taverner &mdash 03/31/05 - 08:51:16 AM
This has a wonderful, spiritual quality, uplifting and
redemptive even in its deep sadness. Perfect ending. I am
amazed by the conception, performance and production.

Although Taverner is from England, and writes Orthodox
choral music, I think you would enjoy listening to his work
(if you haven't already). Try "The Lamb."

Excellent, Mystified. A flawless vocal performance.

The harmonic textures make me close my eyes and reach
deep within my being. Words aren't available that would
adequately describe the moving nature of this piece. I'm
very greatful I was allowed to hear the developments....it
now is perfect.

Your vocal ability continues to astound and amaze. Your
breath control is flawless. Mysty, you've done it again.
Thanks for sharing your gift with us.

Synco...thank you!
The suggestion that you could imagine an instrumental set to the original,
chant-like melody was what got me thinking of ways that I might add layers
to it. To make it a fully-realized piece.
After listening to it so many times, I'm grateful it still moves you.

Thank you, again :)

Wonderful &mdash 03/31/05 - 05:58:07 PM
Absolutely gorgeous. Haunting. You sing this so
wonderfully. A few places on the softer parts where your
voice breaks just a little. But all the rest is excellent and
captivating. Very nicely mixed too. Just the right tone
and acoustics.

It's like a longing prayer. Thanks for posting it for us to
hear.

Wonderful &mdash 04/03/05 - 03:57:08 PM
Thank you, Peter, for your comments.
Recording in this classical style was another 'step' for me in getting back into
music again. After several years of little practice, I have some ground to make
up when it comes to returning to 'vocal form.' The breaks you heard are a
reflection of that. As the composition is one of sadness and longing, I
decided not to go back and fix any minor flaws, leaving them as part of the
emotional 'fabric' of the piece.
Hopefully they are not too distracting.

Thanks again, for your careful listening and your kind remarks :)

[ Reply to This ]
Wonderful &mdash 04/03/05 - 11:47:37 PM
The couple of little breaks were not really so distracting. They were only
slight, just enough that I thought worth pointing out as an area where you
could improve a little. Just being picky to be constructive, as I know you
understand. Again, lovely. I played this for my mother while I was visiting
over the weekend. She really enjoyed the piece and was quite impressed too.

Timeless and prayerful &mdash 03/31/05 - 09:20:52 PM
Gorgeous. Italian aria meets middle eastern riffs with
Gregorian chant undertones. Timeless. Prayerful. The
vocal layers are like lives spun around you. You control
your vibrato and make the piece unique by using it so
sparingly, transcending the opera context. So sweet. The
melody is perhaps too tied to the same scale-like phrase
and doesn't ever soar free, which I'd like to hear at least
for a moment, which is one of the reasons it seems more
like chant (and this may have been your intent). But the
harmonies are so wonderful, so evocative, more than
countermelodies, a special kind of trio setting that is
really wonderful. Thank you for this.

Timeless and prayerful &mdash 04/03/05 - 10:23:58 PM
Thank you, Tobin, for listening and for commenting on this piece.
The main voice was recorded impromptu, and as I sang, I was thinking more
of a chant--melodically very controlled, contained, and more of a prayer in
context.
The harmonies, on the other hand, I allowed to soar and reach--more free
than the inhibition of words, though occasionally you will hear a word at the
end of the vocal line (amore, gioia, pace). They are, in a sense, the soul of
the piece, and the longing. These remained originally as they were recorded,
with the exception of fixing a word or two.

Thank you, again, for your comments. You actually have seen more in this
piece than I did at first, and I appreciate your perspective on it.

This is beautifully and intoxicatingly feminine, I love the
way the backing vocals tend to follow and swirl around

rustling dress.. uh, where was I? Oh, anyway, very nice

As for the picture. Yes. I drew it several years ago in pencil. It has been
modified in Photoshop with the 'Fresco' render effect to give it a look more
suited to the song. Thank you for noticing and asking!
