Description:
Traditionally, and by definition, an elegy has lyrics. Unfortunately, sometimes, there are no words. This meditation, the finale of a four-part piano piece, was written shortly after my father died.

My plan is to post the first three parts as they are recorded. I have sheet music for Parts 1-3 and would be happy for a real pianist to lay those tracks down. Anyone interested?

all beautiful &mdash 04/01/05 - 07:59:50 PM
like white pepper ice cream, you don't know wether it's
spicy or sweet, hot or cold. This tune walks the line
between laughter and tears, joy and sorrow, all of which
make up life, and all is beautiful.

Thanks for sharing your music.

Sometimes you don't really need words. In this case, you seem to have expressed great emotion in this piece without them, and you have played it beautifully. Can't wait to hear more.

Thanks K.I.S. As a pianist I am kind of clunky, that's why I am hoping to find
someone else to play the other parts. I am glad you took time to listen to this
piece.

No words needed &mdash 04/02/05 - 11:04:24 AM
Music's about communication, and you did it quite
effectively in this. Loss and hope. Living and death. Very
personal yet something, musically, to which everyone can
relate.

I'll keep a lookout for the the first three parts. And don't
worry about your playing. Clunky or not, it sounded good
on this end.

...and beautiful. I agree with what has been said before,
here, and think that this music--played by *you*--speaks
volumes, and needs no words.

In the very beginning, I detected a passage vaguely
reminiscent of Satie's Gymnopedies...poignant and
beautiful.
What a wonderful tribute to your father this is.

Thank you for sharing it here.

Hmmm...you are right about that, Cat. Sounds like I have 'borrowed' from
Satie. Not surprising since I have listened to Gymnopedies many, many times.
Thanks for your comments.

Good play &mdash 04/02/05 - 06:24:03 PM
I like the slowly emerging synth the background, but it
increases the artificial feel of the piano. A grand classic
piano of Garageband would have possibly been the better
instrument choice. The slightly random dubs of higher
piano notes towards the ending are nice accents, but they
fall off a bit in timing.

I'm trying to be constructive and hope you don't take it as
criticism. To me, it usually helps to read what people write
in their comments. It puts on a different perspective you
can not get from the inside.

Thanks core. I agree with you about the timing of some of those piano 'echos'
toward the end. In fact, I removed them from the complete version of this
posted as "Larger Than Life," which includes the 1st three segments.

Thanks again.

Aside of all music theory -- I also enjoyed the piece and
found it expressed your emotions very well.

Sweet and true &mdash 04/04/05 - 12:35:55 PM
As usual, you are too modest but that speaks of good
values which I am sure your dad had a lot to do with.
Beautiful melody!

Nice sounds, I know you said clunkiness in one of your
posts but it sounds really tight to me.

Thanks for sharing
