Description:
Now and then for the past 10 years, I have had a part-time job at the Nordstrom clothing store in downtown Indianapolis, as a pianist. I used to make recordings of myself, with my MiniDisc deck, so that I could critique myself after my shift.

One day a group of young men who were in town for a church convention stopped at the piano, and requested "Amazing Grace." You can hear a little bit of the guys in the background. This is from July 2002.

I really dig this fresh version of a gospel classic.

Thanks, coletb. It's fun to do a new take on an old tune.

Awesome. &mdash 04/04/05 - 08:22:54 PM
I found myself snapping along to this upbeat version of
the song my great great (couple times more) uncle wrote
years ago. A smile came over my face, and I found myself
motivated to both A: get a job at nordstroms, and B:
expand my knowledge of songs so that I may play them at
will.

Your great-great uncle, huh?

The Nordstrom job has been great. When you play some of the same tunes
again and again in live performance, it really forces you to reflect so many
aspects of your performance. It has been a growth experience. And I've got
lots more growing I'd like to do.

Flowing playfulness and skill &mdash 04/05/05 - 11:55:29 AM
I dig the playfulness you capture on this take and the skill
of your playing. Thanks for including the backing vocals.
Excellent track.

What's up with this "45-second speed limit between posts?" I don't get it.

Anyway, Tobin, thank you so much. I only wish I had had my tempo under
control. That's my biggest downfall as a live player -- can't keep the beat too
well.

this is wonderful &mdash 04/05/05 - 11:39:50 PM
I'm so glad I found it. Your playing is really enjoyable and
inventive. What you've done here is not easy to do, and I
hope more people get around to hearing this piece.
Thanks!

That is very flattering, coming from such a talent as yourself.

I just love "I Love My Mac!"

wow

Cool, your are really good.

That's nice that you can get paid for playing! Nordstroms
is a nice environment.

I liked the people's voices too.

Thanks. Yes, Norstrom is a wonderful place to play to piano. No cigarette
smoke, no booze, and go home at a decent hour. And no digital piano to
haul!

Swinging &mdash 04/08/05 - 08:52:58 PM
If you can swing that one you are an excellent improviser.
Talent shows and you've got it.

Pleasing grunts &mdash 04/09/05 - 02:13:12 PM
Reminds me of the guy who used to grunt while he played, can't recall his name, due to all those sounds in the background. Even though they are the sounds of pleased onlookers, they sound like you getting into it. Nice work. A total pleasure.

Thank you, Dell. I am so glad I had my MiniDisk recorder going that day. I
will always treasure this track. Not so much for my playing, but for the
sounds of interaction. That's what the music's all about.
