Description:
Contest entry
This one started out as a rant against media and general and newspapers in particular, and how nice it feels, after 20 years, to not be in that world anymore. However, lyrics aside, it's probably more a function of online musical influences, however subtle.

Lyrics:
Ain't it a beautiful day?
You've just nailed the big expose
Despite what the preacher might say
Ain't it a beautiful day?

Little girl struggles with a rusty old tool,
Suffers from AIDS & she's never bin to school.
Story's bin bumped by the movie review,
Too much sorrow, it just wouldn't do.
Cause of the day and whim of the week,
It's reality filtered through the minds of the meek.
Homeless old man wonders where it went wrong,
His story gets cut, it was a little too long.
Teenaged boy drinkin' home-made wine,
Lost his leg, anti-personnel mine.
Second-hand stories gettin' too much play,
Oprah gets heads bobbin', says: "It's OK."

As You Like It, Act II, Scene I, enter Duke Senior:

Jump on the bandwagon, never get off,
You'd better quit drinkin', that's a really bad cough.
Up, down, turnaround, tell me what you see,
The last thing we need is for people to be free.
Move little princess, don't mean to be rude,
In many more ways, you're gonna get screwed.
California condor lost his habitat,
But don't you worry, there's a pill for that.

As You Like It, ibid:

Our food's healthy cuz we don't use grease,
Must be true, it's in the press release.
Some people say: "eat alfalfa sprouts,"
But they took ill, so I have my doubts.
Old lady lion in a hospice bed,
Don't do much; she lives in her head.
But close your eyes and clap one hand,
Maybe she'll go away, hide your head in the sand.
Too busy preaching, too busy to connect,
Just wouldn't do, too politically correct.
Charity pricing has a real nice ring,
But 50 years of fundraising hasn't cured a thing.
Grocery shopping, can't afford what's on the shelves,
Does anybody really scream: "PROTECT US FROM OURSELVES."

Ain't it a beautiful day?
Another line on your resume.
You've topped up your 401K,
And ain't it a beautiful day?
Ain't it a beautiful day?

Thanks for the kind words Slimmie. I came very close to throwing in the towel
for the contest several times. But RC wouldn't let me, even to the point of
putting a collab on hold so I could fight with this tune.
I'm also pleased the rap-type (an apt description, I think) parts worked for
you. I know that Mr. S and GodSuhn have nothing to fear from me but it just
seemed to be the most serviceable and expressive format for the concepts I
was feeling. And, once I got started on those sections, it was like the song
itself took over and the rhymed couplets just poured out.
Thanks again.

A TUMI song with deep lyrics that make you think. Now
that is inovative. Love how this is almost like a one-act
play as opposed to a song. Yeah- I'm surprised this hasn't
had more attention.

AC — Loved that one-act play analogy. Coolest review ever,
dude

This is a great song to post during the NEVER ending
stories about the wedding of Charles and Camilla. Aren't
there more important stories to report?! O.K., sorry for the
rant, but I love the lyrics of your song. I completely agree.
Thanks for expressing it so well.

Thanks so much Emily. And yes, the royal nuptual kerfuffles are a good
example of what i'm on about. I'm even to the point of wishing them a
'happily ever after' if it means we don't have to hear about it anymore.
cheers

I'm surprised people still trust the media as much as they
do.

I hope your message goes far.

It was well done!

Very different... &mdash 04/12/05 - 01:08:30 PM
...and very cool. I like the message, I also like the vocals
of the intro and extro (refrain?)... I think the verses could
come out better with one of the above mentioned refrain
in the middle, not too much, but at least once more to
lighten up the melody of the middle portions of the song.
Again, this if of course only my opinion. :) Overall,
originality and freedom of speech totally gets my heart
bumping on this one! A great song!

I think you might be right Mik and I do have another verse but it will be
awhile before I get to it. I had to fight this one all along the way and I think it
won the last round.
