Description:
As many of you will remember, SlimGirlFat lent her wonderful, smokey vocals to my song "Will You Find Me". More recently, fellow macjammer Emily Rohm expressed an interest in singing the song as well, and... of course I was excited! She did have some mic problems during her vocal recordings just to let you know she is aware of that and is working on improving technical issues as they arise. I've made a few slight changes to the original arrangement but nothing you'll probably notice... By the way, a BIG thanks to everyone for all your comments on "Mr. Simpson" and his accompanying ditty. Cheers.

I like the "dreamy" sound of this song.. So calm and sweet.
Very nice work!
I find the lyrics a bit sad, however, the tune itselfs, makes
me happy. This is a song that makes me want to look
outside the window and daydream all day long :-)

Just listened to the earlier version with SGF and prefer his. The less strident
vocals sound more appropriate to the sentiments of the song here. I'm
reminded of "I Can't Make You Love Me" (by Reid / Shamblin), a song Bonnie
Raitt did a few years back.

thanks for your comments Mungo. Did I understand correctly that you do
prefer SGF's vocals? I'm just curious that's all. I'm glad you liked the melody. I
got certain critiques back from an A & R place saying that they couldn't hear
any recognizable melody in this song, which left me really wondering. (about

Somehow earlier versions of this had escaped my
attention. Extremely well written and played, Daphna.
Emily- beautifully sung. Would love to hear this done with
the "technical issues" resolved. Perhaps some of the more
technical MJers can suggest ways to at least reduce the
amount of hiss and background noise on the track.

I don't remember if I listened to the other version before, but this is really nice. Emily does a super job, and whatever the technical problems were, they really wern't all that noticable to me. The flowing vocal really contrasts effectively with the halting quality in the piano part. The hesitation implied in the lyrics is reflected in the music quite nicely.
The first line in the second verse is sort of a mystery. You might consider changing that first word from "feeling" to "seeming" because if I understand it correctly this is a song about someone putting on a brave front in the midst of a good deal of inner turmoil. Saying that you are feeling fine contradicts that, but maybe that contradiction is what you were looking for. And an "S" sound wouldn't be the same as an "F" sound. It's a little thing, and I'm not saying mysteries in lyrics are a bad thing, but If I was going to change anything in the song it might be that. [ Reply to This ]

I love this song. It was such a melodic song with so many
emotions packed in short phrases. I fell in love with this
song when SGF sang it. When Daphne offered me the
chance to sing it as well I jumped at the chance. I couldn't
hit those low note that SGF easily does, so this version is
much higher. I think it brings a different timbre to the
song. Hope it added something unique. By the way, I
found my husband humming this song in the

You are so the right person to sing this. You have exactly
the right timbre and vocal quality the song needs..
Daphna will tell you that I struggled with this track..LOL.
I so wish I could have done the song as much justice as
you have done. Those high notes you hit are fantastic..
uurgh.. I need to practice more and more..
This is how it is supposed to sound.. Wonderful, from
both of you, I also like the changes you have made

What a beautiful song. I listened to both versions. Emily's voice does suit this song very nicely. Daphna's playing is remarkable as well. I can tell this would be hard to sing, especially those high notes, so you should both be very proud. [ Reply to This ]

I knew one who used to be a vicar and had a qualification in "divinity". He seemed to think God was telling him that unless his (comically limited) musical tastes weren't appealed to then the music had no intrinsic value whatsoever.
Oh, just stick your tongue out at people who use the word "commercial" to describe music. This ain't "product", it's a combination of taste, talent, style and what sounds like enough years of practice to make it sound like you both don't have to anymore.
There is only one word to describe this, a word I never heard my A&R buddy use even though he was better qualified to than most:

this version with new vocalis shows the song itself is so great =0
sounds pure and direct, the ioriginal version with SGF was almost " the world of Slim Girl Fat" lol

...the mix is nearly perfect to my ear (what technical issues?), overal balance is, I think, much improved since the original version (I am not comparing the performances, though, SGF vs. Emily: they are not better or worce, but different in a way, which only enhances one another, if listened to in succession...)
Vocals are really well done, very consistent intonation from the beginning to the end, smooth and profound development; great voice tone. The song itself is just plain pretty, so nice and sad...
...I wouldn't, probably, categorize it as "jazz", although the set of instruments is traditional for a jazz trio, the melody/vocal styling is a 100% "musical theater" (which, nevetheless, is not a bad thing) but who cares? Just beautiful... [ Reply to This ]

by this piece. Such an incredible bit of songwriting. I'm
not sure if I have ever been more impressed by a song on
this site. Just listened to both versions, like them both. I
would like to hear your version (!) Mungo mentioned the
Allen Shamblin tune, "I Can't Make You Love Me," a hit by
Bonnie Raitt. But my favorite version of that piece is
Shamblin singing it solo when I heard him at the Bluebird
Cafe in Nashville.
That said, I was also moved by Emily's rendition here.
Toward the end when she is singing 'hey-hey, doo-doo',
etc...the song becomes heavenly.
OK, I have drooled enough. (I do agree that there is a
high-pitched hum behind the vocal that could be fixed,
other than that, perfect.)

Great singing Em. So wonderful. I listened in headphones,
and your vocals were rich and heartfelt. The parallel
playing of the chords and bass made the arrangement a
little clunky to me, until "I can't stand to feel this way"
when the arrangement opened up in a wonderful way.
Emily, my only suggestion is that one time you sing "Do
do" it comes across as sung, not felt or in keeping with
the true mood you've created in the song, and the softer
consonants you use after that work much better. Very nice

Reminds me of Judy Collins (and that's a compliment).
Yes, the more I listen, I really hear Judy. You've got your
own sound, of course, but the Judy influence is there. I
am talking about the songwriting, the production, and the
singing.

I didn't realize how good SlimGirlFat was until I heard this
composition. I think this song did a good job of bringing
out her vocal qualities. This composition just goes to
show how professional daphna really is. I usually don't
score people's music and I'm not on this one either but it
