Description:
I don't know what Genre this would be in.

I'm open to suggestions, though

Lyrics:
I feel like a headless man
can't think straight no more
standing on dry land
my eyes are sore
from staring at the sun
don't look toward the sky
trying to direction here on earth
you may end up going blind trying to find your self worth

life can be a struggle
so take off the chains
if you begin to see bubbles
just ignore the pain
of your past life
and you'll see the future

take a walk on the yellow brick
let fascination be your guide
and don't look at any lunatics
it's all a matter of pride
tell yourself you're happy

and take hold of the lions paw
the scarecrow may look like your pappy
but that ain't all, that ain't all

life can be a struggle
so take off the chains
if you begin to see bubbles
just ignore the pain

nice style here &mdash 04/12/05 - 11:53:20 PM
This has a nice feel. Good melody with that terrific
rhythm.
I'm impressed :)

Good going

I listened to some of your tunes and I was also impressed! Thanks so much for the comment!

Great mood &mdash 04/13/05 - 10:00:06 AM
I dig this one.

The acoustic guitar rhythm is hooky as hell.

I like the slow flat cymbals. That's a sound I haven't heard
from GB.

Many of the vocals are impossible to understand. The
parlalel hi and lo voices don't help, but they are also
pretty far back in the mix. It's tough when you also put
FX on the vocals to boot. Then again, there's always the
good old "enunciate better" rule too.

I am having similar probs on another song where I'm
running too many things on the vox and they all turn to
mud. Hard to strike that balance between psychedelic and
unintelligible.

Love the pic.

Thanks!

I know exactly what you mean aboput muddying things up. I 'm going to try some other ideas as far as the vocals go, to mek them more understandable. I appreciate the constructive critisizm, thanks!

Alt-rock works for me... &mdash 04/13/05 - 12:43:04 PM
Seems like the genre is just fine where it is. Reminds me of Jay Farrar. Talk about indecipherable vocals! The vocal's a little buried though, but everything else sounds really good. Especially like the cymbals! You could probably take the guitar down a hair during the singing.

Alt-rock works for me... &mdash 04/13/05 - 12:51:27 PM
Thanks, I moved it from "other" to alt/indie based on Skipper's recommendation.

I am going to remix this. I've sung this song a lot, and it is hard for me not to recognize the lyrics, because I have sung them so much. Thanks for the idea about turning down the guit during the vocals!

Really good song &mdash 04/13/05 - 01:37:52 PM
Great vocals and good production, the acoustic sounds a
bit buzzy in places but I definitely like the vocals the way
they are. Has got a Wilco/Uncle Tupelo feel to it

I appreciate the comparison! I will take your advice on the acoustic track.

Catchy &mdash 04/13/05 - 03:10:08 PM
This song hooked me at the get go with the drums. Has a nice, lazy, raw feel. Dig your lyrics. I agree with the comparison to Jay Farrar and with the comment regarding the acoustics. Keep up the great work!

Crazy Horse &mdash 04/13/05 - 07:14:35 PM
Love your tune, Has a real Crazy Horse feel to it, Neil
Young's one of my favorites. Very engaging lyrics. Vocals
are high and tight. Ovations are really bright and crisp. I
think you could really bring up the bass, I think pumping
up the bottom end would bring it all together. Thanks for
posting.

Yeah, I would like to bring the bass up a bit in some parts.

Thanks for the comment!

Instrumentation &mdash 04/14/05 - 07:58:15 AM
I love the arrangement of the instrumentation here, and as
usual the content is very thoughtful and the way you
display is unlike anything I've heard before. Irregularity is
the way to go! Lol! Keep it up, fam!

Live at Der Keller! &mdash 04/14/05 - 08:14:33 AM
As others have stated, the mix gets muddy. Too much for
GarageBand to handle, I guess. I bet importing into Logic
Express and carefully remixing can turn this into a crisp
beauty. It really has some nice hooks. Sounds like a live
bar band performance. I'd like to hear some alternate
chord progressions or more variation in the sung melody
to bring relief from overly repetitive elements. Maybe vary
the bass drum thump more. Bring those vocals forward!
Great job. I look forward to a future installment of this
song.

Live at Der Keller! &mdash 04/14/05 - 08:52:00 AM
Thanks for the ideas and the constructive critique!

However, I don't have Logic. Although, I may try the freebie version. I think the resaon some of it gets muddy is because of the vocal effect on the background lyrics is too strong and overrides the main vocal track, I may try toning that down a bit and bringing up the volume of the main vocals.

Have to agree that this has a real Neil Young and the
Horse feel about it. And that is a good thing!

I really like this song! Very cool rythm and percussion.
Could stand to have the vocal clearer. Very cool!

Thanks for the comparison! Neil Young! wow!

I am going to try to "punch up the main vocals a bit in the remix I'm working on. Which, incedentally is why I love GB!

i dig it &mdash 04/20/05 - 02:25:49 PM
it's kinda weird. i think you'll find a feel for the right mix too. the guitar may be too prominent here, but that all comes with time.

oh &mdash 04/20/05 - 02:27:15 PM
one more thing. . . it sounds like you might have plugged in your ovation. i think the rule of thumb there is to always mic accoustic guitars in recording situations. .that might explain the roughness

oh &mdash 04/21/05 - 07:22:21 AM
Sometimes I plug in AND mic to pic up the sound of the room I'm in. However I didn't do that here. I agree with a lot of the comments here, I like this song a lot and I like performing it, so you may see an altogether new version of it up here. I will also try to EQ the acoustic with a little more bass to it. Thanks agian for the comments!

Ichabod Crane &mdash 04/28/05 - 07:36:44 AM
The Ichabod Crane syndrome. Too bad there wasn't a
headless man in Oz (the again, I never read the books.) I
think it is pretty cool you can sing those parts with no
head. I dig that your are getting a unique sound. Maybe
switch in and out of vocal effects styles to make it easier
on those who want to understand lyrics. I personally like
sound styles better than clear lyrics, and I dig the sound.

not bad &mdash 04/28/05 - 09:06:28 AM
this is a solid song with some good lyrics and nice
hooks. the vocals are hard to deal with, personally i
wouldn't have used the octaves, cause you midrage
singing is pretty good. i do like what the drums are
doing quite a bit though, made it a lot of fun to
listen to.

Good Jam &mdash 04/29/05 - 03:31:15 PM
Love the slow Mellow cymbal crash's in the song! I'll have
to see about experimenting with that some. Pretty much
agree with what everyone else said. However I will add
that you were very inovative on this one. ie. Cymbals....

Love the Loping Rhythm &mdash 05/02/05 - 06:17:11 AM
And I hear why folks are comparing this to Uncle Tupelo /
Jay Farrar.
Very well done and I'm looking for ward to hearing the
remix.

Mmmmm love the lazy drums &mdash 07/11/06 - 09:49:43 PM
Great feel for sure - I know lots of folks have said the song could stand
to have clearer vocals - but I quite like the way they fade in and out.
Of course I'm a guitarist, so I always hated when vocals overpowered
all the cool little intricacies in the guitar work.

I'd love to mess around with this tune/mix - I think it's so well written,
you could do just about anything with it and it would still be great.

Don't know if you'd be open to that - let me know!

Check out the lazy (sampled) drums on 'Resolve' under my profile. :)
