Description:
Following on the heels of "Tristezza," this song turned from a combination of Tune-up Loops to an exercise in 'vocal freedom.'
Where there was a certain constraint to the order of the former song, I kept "Resolution" free of lyrics and allowed the vocal line to flow where it would--taking it to the highest and lowest of my register.

Very liberating and expressive, the song gained its name only in the last stage of its making as it resolved to the more lyric and acoustic ending, a symbolic reminder to me of life, its struggles, and the harmony to be found within resolution.

TUMi loops used:

TUMi Synth Sequence 5
TUMi Glitchbeat 1
TUMi Glitchbeat 2
TUMi Synth Riff 2
TUMi Strings Mellow 3
TUMi Synth Chords 3
TUMi Hi-Hats 1
TUMi Rhodes Melody 4

I liked this a lot, although I would like to hear some lyrics. Just my preference.

Thanks, and good luck in the contest!

Dreamy! &mdash 04/14/05 - 01:54:49 PM
Thank you, Kev.
I never really considered lyrics, as I wanted the voice to drift dynamically with
the flow of the instrumentals.
But it is not a bad idea... ;)

You are my favorite trio &mdash 04/14/05 - 10:08:36 AM
or quartet, or however many voices you choose. I
recognized a couple of the TUMi loops from my own
entry, but, really, the loops in this piece are dwarfed by
your vocals. Something happens about a minute in that
takes this to an other-worldly level, Cat.

What planet are you from?

Thanks so much, Tom, for these comments. I know part of that 'something'
has to do with Synco's ability to put a skillful mix together--working with
getting my vision of the piece as well as working in what needed to be done
to get the right sound out of it....Thanks again, Synco!

As for what planet I'm from...
Well, I'm afraid that's classified ;)

IMHO... &mdash 04/14/05 - 10:15:03 AM
your range and versatility vocally makes you one of(if not)
the best voice around here. You've done a great job with
the mix and making these same 100 TUMI loops sound
fresh and inspirational. The tonal quality and haunting
reverberation of your voice makes this a stunning contest
submission. Thanks for sharing this song here and good
luck in the contest.

Synco, Synco...

Yes, haha! That 'chaotic' section...the subject of much discussion and
reworking in this song.
Besides the fact that the song was stalling my iBook in GB on playback, thank
you so much for offering to refine the mix and to work with what I was
'hearing,' as well as offering suggestions of your own. A richer and more
resonant sound has been the result, and I'm grateful that you were so
generous in offering to help!

I'm not sure we can get on the same wavelength but I'd love to collaborate
with you on a song. Your voice has a mystique that is timeless, spanning the
ages and genres. I cut my gums on Gregorian Chant and other Catholic
hymnody. Later, I latched onto rock, classical music, then space music. We
could do a new chant-rock opera called "Tommy in a Tunic". Maybe ask Tobin
for help.

Wow, there is something about that guitar type picking in

Thank you so much for your comments. You said it precisely--it was

figuring out how to mic those louder high notes was a bit of an adventure,
too.

Enya has been an influence in my music, for certain. When she first appeared
on the music scene, I was entranced by the ethereal vocals and how her voice
sort of floated about the rest. The idea of a 'classical' sound merged with
ambience is one I have wanted to pursue and create a 'style' of my own with.

Well, I guess you can't have cowbell in EVERYTHING....but if you listen closely,
that guitar sound at the end? Really a cowbell... ;)

And yes. Synco most definitely deserves credit for getting all those levels
right in the mix, and bringing out some fantastic dynamics from the vox, as
well as enriching the loops and giving them added depth.

Once again...thank you, Synco!!

Great vocals.... &mdash 04/14/05 - 06:11:41 PM
Bit surprised how early in the piece you get to the

final chord. But you do keep the interest alive throughout
that second half. Cool!

Thank you, TV.
Yes, in a way this composition wandered as it came together, and I had so
much fun wandering in that last section that I extended it a bit.
I'm glad it still held interest.
Those moments of lazy reflections just never seem to last long enough in the
mill of everyday life....

tiler beat me to it &mdash 04/14/05 - 06:27:36 PM
I had an idea for some lyrics to this. They went something
like "I closed my eyes," But only for a moment
because I see Tiler beat me to it.
I generally prefer vowels to consonance but I liked this
tune. And then there's that incredible voice. If I were the
engineer on this one, I'd be calling for that little warble or
tremelo all the time instead of just as the notes tail off.

This is only the third time I've downloaded a MacJams
song to listen to over and over again. Third time since I
registered way back in June of last year. This is the kind of
singing that's freeing and liberating. I know because you
said so yourself. :) There's a whole lot of talent bundled
up in this tune. Great production job, Synco. What else can
I say? I just love it. Period.

You're right. It does sort of wander, doesn't it? A vocal wilderness of 'where
am I, exactly' which ends up to what I do know--two-part harmony in the
traditional sense ;)

It was an adventure in vocal experimentation, for sure. Thanks for following
along.

submit Tumi &mdash 04/17/05 - 11:57:11 AM
As usual, a gorgeous swirl of vocal oohs around well-
thought-out usage of Tumi-toonage. This song is a bit
like cotton-candy, where it just melts away and is finished
as I listen to it... I was left wanting more, and in some
ways that seems counter to the title of the piece. There
was no resolution, no finality, it just drifted in, danced
around beautifully, and faded back out. Despite the "lack"
of resolution, I really loved this piece: enjoyable music,
pretty harmonies sung perfectly and sounding effortless,
inventive revitalizing weaving of those loops (that are
beginning to give me a tumi-ache lately) and great
balance of volume and pitches (yay Synco!) Once again,
left me wanting baklava, well done! And best of luck in
the contest!

Thanks, as always, Drak :)

Swirls of cotton candy doesn't sound too bad...;)
And I appreciate your comments about not feeling a sense of resolution in the
piece itself. I suppose, to me, the cacophony of voices at the start narrowed
down to two at the end filled that 'resolution' sense, though I can see how not
having a final 'destination' would leave one 'drifting.'

Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
