Description:
A collaboration between me and drummer drlaine.

The main melody is Mozart's Sonata #1 in C Major. And there's a little bit of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

I am playing piano sounds "live" from Synthogy Ivory. I have to run it through Digital Performer, then export the audio so I can mix it all together in GB2. Synthogy does work for GB right now, at least not for me.

drlaine is playing real drums. I sent him my piano/bass file, and he sent me back a drum file, and I mixed it all together in GB2.

My piano playing is live, and in real time, but many of the phrases are alternate takes, and I pieced it all together from various takes. Hey, since I have a computer, why not?

drlaine and I have never met face-to-face. But it is great to have such a wonderful musician as a collab. partner.

The bass is from Sonic Boom Box, and is called "Jazz Double Bass Soft." Sometimes you can hear the buzzing of the string against the fingerboard. A pretty nice sound for this sort of track.

Thank you, Macapa. It helps to have good material to jump off from.
Thanks, Wolfgang!

crazy, man &mdash 04/14/05 - 02:21:45 PM
Looks like somebody bombed you &mdash 04/14/05 - 02:23:50 PM
in the writing/content category, but I consider the Mozart
just a hopping off point, and the 'writing' actually the
improvisation around the Sonata No.1 in C (which is one
of my Mozart favorites). I do like this piece more the
further away from the Sonata you get. Wonderful style and
again a great colab with drlaine.

I wonder why somebody bombed you in the songwriting category, that's got to be a joke, jealosy, or a mistake! You did a terrific job!

Such a delight. Full of whimsy and humor, talent and wit.
A truly entertaining track. Masterful arrangement, and
everything sound live and real. I have to listen one more

Another winner. &mdash 04/17/05 - 03:03:27 AM
The drums sound a little "distant" though...so when are you guys going to meet and record together? And when's the album coming out?

The drums ARE distant -- they're two states away! Ha ha ha!

But seriously, thanks, Magritte. I'll take another listen to the balance, and
maybe boost the drums.

Actually, I am hoping for a July release of a piano jazz album. Thanks for
asking.

Hey this is great! And about the drums: the overall sound really reminds me
of Vince Guaraldi's stuff. Light, but full of serious music goodness. Loved it.

what the christ, do you know how hard it is to mic drums?

I think the drum track sounds fan-tabulous. I'm very impressed.

your two performances fit together perfectly-you both
have a great sense of song dynamics and structure-and it
doesn't hurt that you're both great players! another fine
collaboration!

Bam! That's it. &mdash 04/18/05 - 11:28:06 PM
Wonderful! All that ebullient joy flowing from your hands
and hearts. Excellent. And they said it couldn't be done --
magic in a "moment" separated by space and time. That
theory gets dissed tonight.

Great Work! &mdash 04/20/05 - 02:54:33 PM
I think that this is the best piano exercise ever written in
history, the "Sonata in C". It is the only piano technique
that I have ever really studied, and while I am not saying
that I am any acclaimed pianist, I think that a few portions
of my repetoire can lend validity to my claim. I really do
tell people that this Sonata remains the one piece of music
that they should practice if they want to play runs on the
piano.

You mix is really sweet. I love the jazzy spin that you
throw on the two pieces. Also: nice job of interweaving
these melodies. You do this one a certain justice, and I
thank you kindly for sharing.
