Description:
a triptych about three anybodies who thought life was supposed to be about more than what it truly is.

I hope you enjoy!

Lyrics:
(Look at Me) I'm a Star

In the loft of a foul old barn
Lived a boy who never knew harm

Five string guitar asleep by his side
Dreamed of beaches and new pesticides

Played for hours to the pigs and the cow
He wasn't happy, he didn't know how

Wanted more like the guys on t.v.
Turned to the hen and he said, "Someday you'll see!"

He said,
Look at me! I've come very far
Look at me! With my battle scars
Look at me! O' la-la-te-da
Look at me! I'm a star

Longst upon a precious young girl
Princess of a low-cal world

Perfect hair and olive toned skin
No-Salt crackers to keep her thighs thin

With a guy silver in his eye
He couldn't see her life filled with lies

Calvin Klein used to compliment well
Something missing even she couldn't tell

She said,
Look at me! I'm come very far
Look at me! With my battle scars
Look at me! Why is my life so hard?
Look at me! I'm a star

Trash can alley a cat and a dime
Nights linger lazy laughing at time

Shadow'd and broke, a homeless old coot
Tap danced away while another played flute

"I once had it all" said the two-toothed slob,
"What a I life I lost, what a wife what a job!"

Stuck in sorrow with a buck-forty-nine, stops his tappin'
Kicks the cat - oooooh - lunges the dime!

Look at me! I'm come very far
Look at me! With my battle scars
Look at me! How I worked very hard
Look at me! I'm a star

Inherit you rich ones, you can't understand
We average and simple get buried with broken hands

Look at me! I've come very far
Look at me! With my battle scars
Look at me! O' la-la-te-da
Look at me! I'm a star...

Nice composition &mdash 04/15/05 - 06:18:42 PM
very dylanesque....nice feel to this one...did you try a
little compression with this if not that wouldve
smoothed the range a bit, but never the less a great
song

Nice composition &mdash 04/15/05 - 06:27:55 PM
thanks for the feedback, tom... i don't know enough about things like
compression at this point, but i had some friends guide me. the final result
was this, which did have some garageband effects on it (compression likely
being one of them).

i get the dylan/lennon thing a lot. funny, because i like dylan fine, just not a
big fan or anything. lennon, of course, is how i learned to play, so if there's a
comparison there, it's understood. ;o)

Took me back &mdash 04/15/05 - 09:02:18 PM
to the early seventies. My family was living off the land in
Earth People's Park in the most remote corner of Vermont.
Some of my early memories were of the musicians at this
homesteading community sharing music around fires at
night. You did a great job catching the essence and filling
of this time. You sure you weren't there?

Great job!

Boris the Bull: Fine lyrics, very evocative of the 60's, very retro-cool. My favorote lyric is the bridge:

"Inherit you rich ones, you can't understand
We average and simple get buried with broken hands"

Very nice indeed! I heard a little Dylan, a little Donovan, a little Lennon as someone else mentioned. It also reminded me of the kind of cuts on albums by groups like King Crimson, Pink Floyd or Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (such as "Lucky Man") which were a bit inconguous to the rest of the album's theme, but which added so much.

(Aside to aclarke: No way! I used to live at Earth People's Park in the early 70's! I was one of the originals--called "Rainbow" at the time. Email any memories you have...I've been trying to find out anything I can about people from there during those days. Hope to hear from you!)

Nice song and a good arrangement, the vocals kinda
remind me of Ian Hunter (singer with 70's UK band Mott
The Hoople).

Brought here by Joanna's forum thread. What a lovely
voice you have and what wonderful words: "Dreamed of
beaches and pesticide..."

The only thing I didn't like was the little guitar whistle
after Calvin Klein. It's corny... in a very uncorny song.

Let's hear it for songs in 6/8!

That I didn't hear this earlier than now. Excellent lyrics, melody and arrangement and well done performance, playing and singing

Wit and bitterness &mdash 05/10/05 - 10:43:00 AM
Great critical lyrics, wonderful wit, contemporary
references, use of rhymes. I was hoping the third verse
would have gotten the girl and boy together, but maybe
that is just my theatre background talking. But it became
kind of a bitter song and I was expecting something
different. Nice balance, construction, performance,
arrangement. But I think it lacks a unifying force,
lyrically, even tho the chorus hook is fantastic. If the boy
and girl get together and you replace the old guy verse
with something unifying, it might be a stronger piece? Or
replace the girl stanza with one about the guy at a mid-
life stage, to create a through line? (Cuz the old guy
stanza is really good.)

love that groove! &mdash 05/20/05 - 09:09:00 AM
I dig the acoustic feel. drums don't feel like a loop. they
sound acoustic, but not listed in your hardware list. Is the
lead guitar sound a real guitar or the "old yamaha
keyboard" as listed? keep it up! like the little reference to
bach! very cute!

thanks to everyone for the wonderful feedback. as for the guitar, it's all real
guitar. the yamaha was used primarily for the drums. it's got a bunch of drum
settings on it that normally i'd never even touch, but the brush settings were
spot on for this tune. oh, and i'm happy you uncovered the hidden Bach!
nobody has even mentioned it before! muhuhaha! ;o)

Appealing song &mdash 05/26/05 - 11:35:19 PM
Boris your voice is instantly recognizable which is an
asset. You have a wistful quality that communicates
emotion beautifully. And write good lyrics.

that's just one of the things i love about mj - you're just sitting there, wandering around, looking at this, peeking at that and suddenly - WOW - 35 years fall away and i'm sitting in my bedroom listening to bob and john, george, paul and ringo but not quite - nostalgic, memorable, original and on the ipod - thank you x
