Description:
A birthday present to my daughter Dar (she is in Paris at the moment, so I decided to give her a tune for her birthday; it does sound French for me somehow...)
This version is slightly remixed, added some more sax tracks, removed some effects, little things...
Was looking for some nice accordeon SF2, but couldn't find one. Oh, well...

Hardware:
Yamaha "CustomZ" tenor saxophone YTSZ82, Otto Link Super Tone Master 10* mouthpiece, Vandoren Traditional #3 reed, RadioShack 33-3004 dynamic microphone, FastTrack USB, Maxell NC-II noice-cancelling headphones, iMac G4 800Mhz (1GB RAM).

Wonderful tone on the tenor &mdash 04/19/05 - 09:55:17 AM
Incredible airiness, the #3 reed gives the opening tenor a
lovely, less reedy, more breathy sound. This is a beautiful
piece.

Now the sax section has entered. Very cool. I am in sax
heaven. The solo, at first, is all air! You're killing me.

This somehow seems to be a kind of somber b-day
present, but that is beside the point. What a wonderful,
boss piece. And that last note!!!

4 X 10 (from a has-been alto player.)

Wonderful tone on the tenor &mdash 04/19/05 - 10:37:09 AM
Thank you very much. Compliments are especially treasured when they come from someone who makes beautiful music himself. Your Summer Place is a gem... And as for the overal mood being a bit sad... Well, I miss her :) Song was mixed during this weeknd, when I was stuck at home with two idiotical dogs of mine, 'cause I sent my wife to Paris to visit our daughter for her birthday. Hence the name. :{)

Nice! &mdash 04/19/05 - 01:00:46 PM
Wasn't sure where it was going to take me. The sax solo at
the beginning seemed a little long at first.
Incredible tone you have there on the Tenor. Very well
recorded except for a few moments where I hear a little
distortion. Wasn't sure if it was coming from my system.
The background Saxes over the solo could be a little
louder.
Nice touch with the strings. Very Nu Jazz%u2026

Monsieur Lisse &mdash 04/19/05 - 02:30:17 PM
The way you capture the intimacy of the sax is excellent.
Your long intro shows the kind of patience and grace it
takes to be a great father. Effortless transitions, great
drumming and bass choices... What a wonderful gift for us
all. Congratulations on your daughter's birthday, an even
great creation.

nice introduction . . . &mdash 04/20/05 - 08:40:56 AM
Like how you start of with just one instrument then the
others follow. This has a kind of Stan Gets feel.
You sure do a nice job here.

Brings me back in time, because my father was in a big
band and played sax professionally for a while. He played
at home as well and this tune brings back that feeling to
me.

Thanks for sharing!

Good! &mdash 04/22/05 - 03:58:14 AM
Very nice airy sax-playing going on here.

I'm not sure about the string-synth though. It kind of detracts from the
analogue, jazzy feeling. It might be that it just sounds so fake underneath the
greatness of the other instruments though.

Thank you. On strings - yes, but one has to work with what one has...

Beautiful &mdash 04/23/05 - 08:15:45 PM
. . . music, and the picture is beautiful, too. Soulful
playing. Great intonation and phrasing.

From time to time I judge "Solo and Ensemble" contests on
Saturdays here in Indiana, and when I write these
comments, it sometime feels like I'm filling out another
judging sheet. However, your music is quite a few levels
above the music I usually hear at those sort of events. I
like the unison melodies happening about 1/3 of the way
into the song.

You make it all sound so easy. Well done. You must
practice for hours (and for years!).

Beautiful &mdash 04/23/05 - 08:32:17 PM
Thank you, John. I have indeed been doing it for a while now. Although I
never had any formal musical training, music had always been a part of my
life, ever since my father bought me my first saxophone - I was 14 then. After
that... you name it: marching band first, then 15000 failed attempts to form a
band of some sort, then a steady gig at the cafe next to the college I went to
for two years, then first tenor at semi-professional big band for another
couple of years, then - immigration, and about 10 years in a slowly decaying
latin band, which went from 17 people to 2, then - and I am eternally grateful
for it to all the good people at Apple - GarageBand, which finally gave me an
opportunity to play my music the way I see it fit.
I am glad you liked it.
Jam on.

A Really Fine Soundscape... &mdash 04/25/05 - 09:20:45 PM
...as represented in your artwork for this tune. I love the paradox in the chosen title against the landscape art. A sense of the vastness while in contemplative isolation. A powerful and poignant birthday card. Nicely done in true IG style.:)

I like your playing and production here a lot.
And the ensemble sections are integrated very well into
the overall song the overall effect that makes me think of
Oliver Nelson and his work with Eric Dolphy.

Top flight production and performance. Very moving,
captivating piece. I'm thinking solitary confinement takes
place on a small stage, in a dimly lit, smokey bar. You're
playing to kill the pain, but it won't go away.

Very impressed with your tone & phrasing. Excellent piece, I really enjoyed the way it developed. Masterfully written and arranged. Contrary to the other post I actually enjoyed the strings. You are very talented and to my ears possess a musical sense that is rare.
