Description:
In the movie, "The Jerk", starring Steve Martin, there is a scene where Navin sings a song in the bathtub that he just wrote. It's just him splashing around and singing for his girlfrind in the next room. Well, I got the idea to take it and turn it into a full-fledged musical epic.

Here's an audio clip of the scene in the movie where you can hear the original:
http://www.moviewavs.com/cgi-bin/mp3s.cgi?Jerk=thurmas.mp3

I kicked it up a notch. All in tribute to a damn funny man, Steve Martin, and his masterpiece film, "The Jerk".

Lyrics:
Oh I'm picking out a thermos for you
not an ordinary thermos for you
but the extra best thermos you can buy
with vinyl and stripes and a cup built right in

I'm picking out a thermos for you
and maybe a barometer too
and what else can I buy
so on me you'll rely
a rear end thermometer too

Hardware:
Mac G5, Line 6 POD, M-Audio USB, Audio Technica MB4000C mic, Westbury electric guitar

Greenstone North American Men's Chorus &mdash 04/22/05 - 10:38:01 AM
How you came up with this is beyond me. When did the
light bulb go off? or come on?

Your execution of this unusual idea is inspired. How many
of you are there in this piece?

I don;t know what else to say, except that this piece gave
me a lift. Excellent job, Mr. Greenstone, to you and all
your men.

Greenstone North American Men's Chorus &mdash 04/22/05 - 01:50:51 PM
Thanks, Tom.

There are some 15 layers of me singing as the choir. No pitch modulation
done. I used the matrix reverb set on medium hall to push it all back into the
space like a real choir.

Beatiful! &mdash 04/22/05 - 11:22:41 AM
I had tears in my eyes....

Because I was laughing so damn much! Thank you for keeping things weird!

DL/10s! ( And you freakin deserve every one of them)

This is classic. &mdash 04/22/05 - 11:59:48 AM
Now you need to make a video, featuring this new
version of the song with synchronized swimming,
confetti explosions, spotlights, a chorus of popes
and more! You should have made it even longer!
What a blast.

This is classic. &mdash 04/22/05 - 02:13:30 PM
Thanks. Believe me, I have those visuals in mind. Scene starts out with
Nathan by himself singing in the tub in a small bathroom set in a pool of light
on an otherwise dark stage. He sings the first round of the song. But then
the set opens up, the tub sliding off to the side. Lights come up as a choir
marches forward, dancers in giant thermos outfits twirl onto stage. Angels
swing in from wires above the stage, pyrotechnics go off (pop, boom, flash!),
a hi-kicking line of girls crosses the stage, glitter and confetti fall from
above, Steve comes out on stage now wearing a white tux with cane and top-
hat, riding a small elephant, doves are released and fly out over the
audience.... oh, GOD, YES! OHHH the GLORY!!!!!! YES!!! YES!!!! YES!!!!!
Ends with everyone posed with their arms and hands stretched out. Blackout.

STEVE MARTIN!!!!! woooohoooooo

Did you know... &mdash 04/22/05 - 01:56:36 PM
...that there is a vacuum in a thermos bottle? Or did it
escape into your head? You are crazy, just like Stevo. The
only thing that could bring logic or reason to this song
would be to export it to Logic or Reason. I love it. I wish I
had thought of this.

new genre? &mdash 04/22/05 - 03:23:25 PM
i think you're onto something here: alt-rock/showtune/
comedy/big band/chorale.. if he was singing about losing
his thermos, you could add country/western

why stop here?

new genre? &mdash 04/26/05 - 04:11:03 PM
Great idea, _nder. How about a version sung in different languages like the
"It's a Small World" song.

Sometimes I wish the movie The Jerk was 4 million
hours long, and everything else could wait while I
watched it. You earned your cup of Pizza on this one!

That movie never gets old for me. I hear there is a new special edition DVD
out now, but I can't find it, only the crappy pan-and-scan cruddy version.

By the way... &mdash 04/22/05 - 08:25:21 PM
...I seriously think you should track down Steve Martin's management and send this to him.

I really think... &mdash 04/24/05 - 09:12:43 PM
...you should get one of those thermoses (thermi?) that
fits into the top of one of those big black lunch boxes the
construction workers use.

That would be great.

see you attempt this live.

Great song, Peter- very funny and extremely well

Glad you decided to post this.

I love the "And a cup built right in" part. Rocks.

I used to sing this to my wife all the time.

She laughed really hard at this.

isn't this a cover? &mdash 04/26/05 - 10:21:09 AM
Not to pour cold water in your bathtub, but isn't this a cover and thus not allowed here? I guess rules are made to be broken... oh well. Pretty clever.

How about a sequel? &mdash 07/25/05 - 01:31:02 PM
You could call it All I Need is This.

This is pants-wettingly funny. BTW, this week's Entertainment Weekly reviews the new DVD, so it must have just come out.
