Keywords:
english (25)england (9)traditional (65)folk (369)17th century (1)acoustic (489)
Description:
An improved version of one of my early posts, now featuring my friend Johannes (Cori Ander) with his beautiful guitar playing.

I decided to redo this when I got my new condenser mic, and thought it would also benefit from a decent guitar track instead of my inept twanging. I'm immensely grateful to Johannes for his work on this track, not just for the guitar but for the ideas he contributed to the arrangement.

The song originates in 17th century England.

Lyrics:
Come all you maids who live at a distance
Many a mile from off your love
Come and assist me this very moment
For to pass away some time
Singing sweetly and completely
Songs of pleasure and of love
For my heart is with him all together
Though I live not where I love

When I sleep I dream about you
When I wake I take no rest
Every moment thinking of you
My heart is fixed within your breast
Though great distance may prove assistance
From my mind your love to remove
My heart is with you all together
Though I live not where I love

All the world should be of one religion
All living things shall cease to die
If ever I prove false to my jewel
Or any way my love deny
The world would change and be most strange
If ever I inconstant prove
My heart is with you all together
Though I live not where I love

So farewell lads and farewell lasses
Now I think I've made my choice
I'll away to yonder island
Where I think I hear his voice
If he calls then I will follow
Though the ocean be so wide
My heart is with you all together
Though I live not where I love

Sweet and Beautiful &mdash 04/23/05 - 09:30:43 PM
Very melodic and your voice sounds very sweet. Nice
simple arrangement and clean guitar playing. What more
do you need? Nothing I can think of. 8's across the board.

Lovely lilting vocals &mdash 04/23/05 - 10:34:16 PM
and Johannes' guitar work is impeccable. Such a rich
beautiful tone he gets. This is a match made in Europe.
Beautiful. A seamless collaboration.

Thank you! I agree, Johannes gets an incredibly warm and resonant
sound from that guitar which is a delight to listen to.

Blimey... &mdash 04/24/05 - 05:13:07 AM
This is wonderful - the singing - and a great piece of
accompaniment. Really great EQ on the guitar, and such
sensitive playing. Perfect for Rebsie's voice. And Rebsie's
harmonies are incredible.

Cheers, William. I'm very pleased that you like it. Collaborations are one
of the most rewarding aspects of MacJammer life. I've always wanted to
find like-minded musicians to work with but it's never really happened
until now.
So I'll make sure I put out a SHAMELESS PLUG for your next song ...

Another collaboration I'm proud of!

Not my kind of thing but… &mdash 04/24/05 - 06:51:10 AM
I'm not going to vote on this because it's really not
my kind of thing and it would be harsh of me to
bring the score down in any way just because it's
outside of my area of preference. However, I think I
should at least comment to say that this sounds
fantastic. The performance and production on this
are great and all praise to both Rebsie and Johannes
for all their obvious hard work on this collaboration.

lot to the song and compliments your voice in the nicest
way. Excellent collaboration! More!

performance laying gently atop a stellar guitar bed. Both
of you should be very proud of your work here.

I can't tell if this is a traditional tune you've brought
forward of it you wrote the lyrics yourself. I hope it's the
latter as they're charming. Your voice is perfectly suited
to the song and the guitar is a very tasteful
accompaniment. Very nicely done.

amused and pleased... &mdash 05/14/05 - 08:26:38 AM
This song almost has a hymn-like quality to it at the
beginning, but then it becomes much more playful as is
goes on. The harmonies are well-executed, but the
instrumentation is a bit too sparse for my exact taste. I
would have liked to hear the harmony a lot more
throughout the song. The lyrics complement the song
well. They're not clunky, as it turns out for many other
songwriters here, who don't polish and rewrite enough.
Otherwise, a charming piece of work to add to your
repertoire, as it must sound great in the right live venue.

But - you never know. I might give it another try one day.
