Description:
This is my first venture into using loops. I actally sat down to write lyrics and melodies for a tune for Tiler that he calls "Softly." It was a very quiet calm tune, and for some reason all that would come out of me was this angry stuff. Since I obviously couldn't use it on Tiler beautiful guitar piece, I turned to loops to backup the tune that was in my head.
This song is about unhealthy obsession. It's very repetative for 2 reasons: (1) It fits with the obsessive nature of the lyrics, and (2) I don't know much about using loops! This song is very unlike things I usually do, but hey, change is fun. I'm not really like the person in this song, honest!!
Artwork is "Fighting Forms" by Franz Marc
Lyrics:
My bags are packed and ready to go
You've caused more damage than you'll ever know
You're calmly sleeping in your bed
While I'm going out of my head
As per your request I will be gone
By the time you wake up in the morn
I may go calmly in the night
But I won't let go without a fight
I won't go softly
I won't go quietly out of your life
I won't go softly
You can't leave me, you don't have the right
I'm not obsessed, don't be absurd
I simply hang on your every word
It's not the time for this to end
I don't want to be your f***ing friend
I'm sorry, that was not required
I'm feeling a little overtired
I just can't sleep without you there
Don't you make me go, now don't you dare
I won't go softly
I won't go quietly out of your life
I won't go softly
You can't make me you don't have the right

Dirty title &mdash 04/27/05 - 04:08:21 PM
I just realized that when you look at the title of this song
in the new song list, it says "I Won't Go Soft." TeeHee...that
sounds a bit naughty. [ Reply to This ]
Emily? Is that you? &mdash 04/27/05 - 04:12:19 PM
Just kidding. This is a very different sound for you, not
just the loops, but also the vocal style. Excellent job. You
sound very obssessed/crazed/scary/nightmarish.
Technically, I think there is some minor distortion in the
vocal track. Sounds just a little hot.
Fun, demented piece. [ Reply to This ]
Emily? Is that you? &mdash 04/27/05 - 04:17:49 PM
Yeah, you're right about the distortion, but I left in in because I thought it
kind of fit in the song. It is a bit hot, though. Thanks for listening. I'm back to
my sweet self now! I promise! [ Reply to This ]
Great &mdash 04/27/05 - 05:26:10 PM

please extend this, its got great potential! [ Reply to This ]
Great &mdash 04/27/05 - 05:42:28 PM
Thanks MiMi. I definitely want to expand on this once my GB skills improve.
Thanks for the compliment! [ Reply to This ]
Damn fine singing &mdash 04/27/05 - 06:02:20 PM
Really great singing. The audio quality is rather distorted
like it's peaking in the loud parts of the vocals. I think
you could do a lot more with the backing music. THe
loops you have in there, particularly the guitar loop is a
bit too familiar, though it sounds good. I think you could
build this up a lot more to meet the intensity of your
vocals. I think the lyrics are really good and to the point.
I say that you are off to a really good start here with this
one. Worth developing it more. [ Reply to This ]
Wowser &mdash 04/27/05 - 07:10:23 PM
This is really cool! It's way too short but I could see a
guitar solo in this (interested in collaborating?) with a
bridge in there somehow. I like the overdriven vocals, but
needs just a little tweaking. Wow! [ Reply to This ]
ha, the new Emily &mdash 04/27/05 - 08:47:47 PM
You can sure belt out a tune. Great singin Emily.
This should be developed into a longer one. The singing
has some Grace Slick influences. Just a powerhouse of
knock out drag em on the floor singing.

Thanks, Tiler. I wouldn't have this song if it weren't for your song...! I'm
hoping to get to *your* "Softly" soon! [ Reply to This ]

welcome to the dark side! &mdash 04/28/05 - 11:52:10 AM
This was very different and interesting!
I liked the emotion of this. I'm glad to hear you experiment with your sound!
Not really crazy bout the loops, but....
The vocal performance and the lyrics make up for that! I want to hear more! [ Reply to This ]
Yes &mdash 04/28/05 - 12:20:20 PM
Nice fire and vitriole in your vocal performance here. I
agree with Peter about the backing tracks ... maybe
altering the intensity of the background here and there or
adding another background keyboard element at points
would add to the dynamics of the song. [ Reply to This ]
Great start &mdash 04/28/05 - 12:40:42 PM
Emily writing a song with the red explicit warning, thought
it as a misprint! I dig the whole Fiona Apple vib. This is a
totally cool idea, with perfectly expressed sentiments.
Consider doing another version that is more complete,
with an electric guitar solo section (I'm sure someone will
gladly collab with you) and without that distorted
overdriven effect on your voice (which I don't think is
necessary). Your angry articulations are enough, the
overdrive amp actually puts a distance between you and
the honest disgust/obsession you are able to express in
your performance, makes it into a studio performance
instead of an honest exorcism. Maybe you can put in a
bridge too, where you say something more, as you stand
over his vulnerable sleeping body tangled in the sheets.
But just hint at it, an ambiguous detail, cuz there is way
more rage in what you are making me imagine than what
I'd ever want sung in a lyric! Rock on, Em. [ Reply to This ]
Great start &mdash 04/28/05 - 12:48:36 PM
Thanks Tobin. I was curious to see what you'd think of this! I've a got a lead
on a possible collab, so we'll see what happens with it. I know it needs to be
developed more. I wrote and recorded it in about an hour, so I didn't devote
as much time to it as I could have. I hope to revisit it for sure. [ Reply to This ]
Angry! &mdash 04/28/05 - 12:44:02 PM
I like it. For a first effort in the genre it's very good. It can be very cathartic to get yer scream on every now and then. Vocals were so good that I even forgot about how many times I've heard that guitar loop! If you want to explore more in the rock /alternative realm, I've got lot's of tracks needing vocals! [ Reply to This ]
Thought I commented &mdash 04/28/05 - 05:55:31 PM
but I meant to say I love the aggression of this song.
There is no question you're point was made.
What a voice! Quickly made me forget you used loops (not
that that's a bad thing). [ Reply to This ]
way to go Emily! &mdash 04/28/05 - 09:29:16 PM
I was thrilled when I heard this song. I think I've got a
couple of songs for you in this genre, I just have to
actually write them! This is an awesome piece. Thanks for
sharing. [ Reply to This ]

Wow... &mdash 04/28/05 - 10:04:37 PM
this tune really shows your versatility... I think Tobin
mentioned fiona apple... I totally agree. This seems to be
a really great sketch for a smokin' tune. I dig the intensity
in your voice. [ Reply to This ]

Wow, your voice knows no bounds.
I really wasn't expecting this, I was pleasantly surprised.

Rockin' Tune!! &mdash 04/28/05 - 11:44:11 PM
Your voice has wonderful power. I love it!!!! I hadn't
checked out your folkie tunes as rock is where I live so
your voice is a new discovery for me and quite the
wonderful discovery it is. I really, really love ladies
singing power rock (as opposed to scream rock). It's not a
sexual thing; it just sounds better and you do it great! [ Reply to This ]
Oh yeah &mdash 04/30/05 - 08:36:25 PM
Reminded me of a Killer Debbie Harry concert I saw once.
All these disco people came out to hear Heart of Glass and
they got something totally different. Those of us who went
to hear One Way or Another thought the whole thing was
just great. Loved this one.
(Although I think JB has a point — a searing guitar solo
would go good.) [ Reply to This ]
RAW! &mdash 05/01/05 - 06:01:10 PM
Hey, really great! I like the rawness of your voice. It's
unbreakable. The synthbass helps a lot to accomplish that
rawness. This surely is rock to me. It's sad that the song is
very short. It needs to modulate at some point, so my
suggestion is to make it more treathening as a
counterpoint (very calm intermezzo building up more
agressive to the chorus again, could be a solo, but your
voice and lyrics say it all) If a solo, think of Neil Young's
"Southern Man", that kind of a dirty burning solo (could be
perfect for this) [ Reply to This ]

Whoa &mdash 08/03/05 - 08:37:16 PM
I love wasting the education that I will still be paying for for the next 10 years
or so. Damn student loans... In all reality, studying opera is what allowed me
to find my true voice, no matter what style I'm singing. So I guess it's been
worth it! [ Reply to This ]

Yeah!!! &mdash 08/12/05 - 02:15:06 PM
Nice one, great voice, great simple loops. Overall it's a stunning song. The only thing that could be better is if the chrous had a distorted guitar and heavy drums. Other than that, spot on! [ Reply to This ]
mmmm yeah! &mdash 08/15/05 - 03:00:33 AM
very nice all it needs is a guitar break and you're home and
dry, brilliant lyrics, perhaps change%u2026
"I won't go quietly out of your life"
to%u2026
"I won't go quietly from your life"
and I too, think the distortion on the vocals adds to the
nightmare-ish aspect [ Reply to This ]
Excellent &mdash 09/01/05 - 09:56:05 AM
Is that really your photo? &mdash 09/04/05 - 03:01:36 PM
One of the best things I've heard. When your voice goes
high up on the chorus it really reminds me of PJ Harvey
when she screams the high notes.
The fact that the vocal is slightly distorted just makes it
for me. If it were a professional recording it would never
be left in, and would be much worse for it. [ Reply to This ]
great start &mdash 10/19/05 - 10:08:02 PM
I just listened to the collabortation you did of this song. Now I
know why that turned out so well. It is because this song is
perfect to build off of.
Yes, the vocal track is a little distorted. But, with what you are
working with, it turned out great.
Keep up the good work. [ Reply to This ]
Simple and great &mdash 11/01/05 - 01:57:55 PM

simple is the best way to go. And great voice. [ Reply to This ]
wa' happen' &mdash 12/23/05 - 11:34:24 AM
... the song just ended - too short, goddammid!
This has a great, scare the s@@t out of you vocal, and I think the distortion on the vocal really works for this.
It just feels like it (you/ the song)rrreally wants to let rip at some point, as intense as this is - it could be notched up even higher.
Great stuff. [ Reply to This ]

Never Go Softly... &mdash 04/01/06 - 10:57:39 PM
I listened to one song of yours where you were singing an operatic
piece and then this one. Great range and very impressive.
I like your lyrics and choice of loops. You kept it simple which I think
worked to the advantage of the song. Too much more going on and it
would have lost its edge.

I am thrilled to find this song! It's great! I too have a dirty little dark
songstress shacking up in my soul. Every no and then, you have to feed
the little minx, or else she gets really pissed!
I love this. It's fantastic, but I agree with some of the other comments that
it's too short! I think I saw something on your list that's newer? I'm hoping

totally late to this party, but happy I found your page. Having theatre in my family and my blood I had to hear some of what you do, but also being a rocker at heart I had to click on the "alternative rock" song first. Man, good stuff. I agree with your choice about the distortion. Listen to PJ Harvey's song "Perfect Day Elise". I think you'll like it.
PS> You have amazing pipes. What clarity, and a little mischief to go along with them. I'd love to do a collab sometime. [ Reply to This ]
