Description:
THE FINAL MIXED AND MASTERED VERSION OF THIS TRACK IS AVAILABLE ON MY DEBUT ALBUM, "SOMETHING".

http://www.simig.com/records/artists/peter/peter.htm

THIS VERSION IS CLOSE TO FINAL BUT NOT THE FINAL.

After a few weeks of joking around I finally got inspired to make another serious song. As has been said, every new beginning is some other beginning's end.

No loops of any sort involved. The rhythmic breathing you hear was all done in one long take, and I nearly passed out by the end from hyperventilation. The big freeform drums were all penciled in, trying to imagine myself sitting at a drum set.

SlimGirlFat was kind enough to lend her whispering voice to this song in a few places.

Thanks, Slimmie. ;-)

I hope you like it.

Lyrics:
Si sedes non is.

Is this where I belong
Should I remember you
Are you a friend to me
Am I someone to you
Should I speak at all

This skin is not my own
this place is not my home
do you belong to me
are we the only ones

Are we all alone

Something seems amiss
I don't know what it is
A foreign memory
it's not supposed to be
it's not supposed to be
it's not supposed to be

it's not supposed to be
it's not supposed to be
it's not supposed to be

Hardware:
G5 2.5x2, Westbury electric guitar, Line 6 POD, M-Audio Quattro USB, Audio Technica MB4000C mic, and a piece of my dog's rawhide bone to make the cracking sounds.

Software:
GB2 and JamPack 4, Amadeus II (for a reversal effect)

Intense &mdash 05/03/05 - 11:42:05 PM
Amazing vocals, especially in the chorus near the end. So
much passion! The entire production is eerily interesting
and downright mesmerizing. Way to go!

WOWZA! &mdash 05/04/05 - 06:10:17 AM
So captivating. I hear nothing here that I do not like. It kind of reminds me of a mix of Bowie and Martin Gore. I am stunned by your talent.

You just keep getting bigger and bigger. Seems to be no
end. This is excellent. Very creepy and disturbing in a
good way.

My only complaint is that now the font on the song
description and lyrics is so small I have trouble reading it,
but that's not your fault. Whose fault is it??

the doubled vocals & whispers create an eerie feeling of
depth & wonderment. the emotive guitars complete the
mood wonderfully. nice use of doggie props, too.
incredible tune, pete

Epic!! &mdash 05/04/05 - 08:13:50 AM
This is great! Somewhere between Radiohead and Wall-era
Pink Floyd! You really have the Roger Waters voice down
pat! Maybe Gilmour should call you in for the next tour!!

I LOVED this. Very much like Wall-era Pink Floyd, one of favorite albums of all time. I don't know if that is what you were gong for but this is awesome.

Worth each breath &mdash 05/04/05 - 08:49:53 AM
Very cool concept. Your passion toward the end, and
general energy, is like Peter Gabriel at his best. Highlights
you very cool voice, your unique ear, and your sense of
drama and musicality. Slimmie's whispers are a great
touch. The electric guitars seem a bit far away, but maybe
that adds to the mood. Love the wall of sound feel.
Fascinating and really well done.

Well, I can't reply directly now with the new setup here &mdash 05/04/05 - 05:33:59 PM
... but I want to thank you all for listening and for your comments.

I know there is a bit of a Pink Floyd's The Wall sound to this. It wasn't intended that way but I became totally aware of it as some of the elements came together. The rhythmic breathing, for instance, sounds a lot like the chanting crowd at one point; I wasn't trying to sound like a crowd, just making my breathing become more and more intense with the music. Like I said in the description, I did that all in one long take and my head started spinning by the last part. Nearly passed out. hehe

Pink Floyd was my biggest musical influence as a teenager. I've added a lot of other great influences since then, including Bowie and Peter Gabriel.

Very much enjoy hearing a new song by you, Along with what has
been mentioned, I relish lyrics that have a bit of a 'shroud of
mystery' to them. After a while, some songs get whole other meanings to them.
To me, yours do.
Maybe by July or so, I'll figure this one out. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think there's a deeper meaning to your Stars on the Ceiling song

Flaming Lips &mdash 05/06/05 - 03:04:34 PM
This reminds me more of Flaming Lips for some reason than Peter Gabriel. Maybe just because Gabriel is pretty high tech and massively epic and this is a lot more intimate. Very good!

Wow, thanks, Jim. The Flaming Lips are great. I just recenlty saw them perform
on Austin City Limits; wish I could have gone. They put on an insane show. I'm
honored to be at all compared.

Fantastic! &mdash 05/07/05 - 07:41:11 AM
Very dark and complex and beautifully put together, but it's the confidence you're now getting in your work that really makes this stand out. Your voice is as gorgeous as it ever was but you're doing new things with it and finding new depths of expression. I'm seriously impressed, Peter!

Fantastic! &mdash 05/07/05 - 05:07:53 PM
Thanks, Rebsie. Yeah, I'm continuing to try new things with my voice. The
second line that I really belt out, "We're not supposed to be" was the very first
time I got that kind of sound out of my voice. It was a matter of just trying and
finding the right technique. I feel like I have a new tool in my box.

What I'm hearing &mdash 05/12/05 - 10:48:31 AM
Peter, I'm not sure what you intended this song to be about (maybe alien abduction? existential loneliness?). However, I'll tell you how it's been playing for me. The first time I listened to it was right after a longtime friend told me how he had to commit his mother to an Alzheimer's care facility, as she drifts in and out of lucidity, no longer living in her home, and your words and singing uncannily reflected on that experience. Every time since, that is what I hear it being about. I know it's meant to be more than that - I just thought I'd share what I've been hearing.

What I'm hearing &mdash 05/12/05 - 05:14:51 PM
Thanks, Warren, for sharing your interpretation. I really like to hear what
meaning people find for themselves in my music. In the most basic terms,
the concept I had in my head as I wrote this song was that of a lost identity. I
did have a more specific concept that I wrote to but kept undefined so as to
keep it more open to interpretation. The concept was this: (not being a
religious person but liking the metaphore) God has wiped out the Universe
and started again for the Nth time. The new Adam/Eve being is trying to
come to terms with his/her new exsitance, not knowing anything, but feeling
some lingering sense of the last life that haunts him but that he can't
comprehend. His instinct tells him this new existence is all wrong somehow.

While I had that imagery in my head as I wrote the song, it means different
things to me personally depending on what's on my mind when I hear it.
Actually, the first thing that got me thinking of writing such a song was an
old episode of the Twilight Zone, "Person Or Persons Unknown", about a man
who wakes up one day to find he has lost his identity and no one knows him
or has any record of his existence. That was the initial spark, and I thought
the episode title would work nicely for the song title after I finished it.

I'm glad you found your own personal connection to the song.

thoughts from the bull... &mdash 05/20/05 - 12:01:41 AM
i love the way this one comes in. i find most everything
i've heard of yours appealing, but this is very different to
me. others have referenced Pink Floyd, but this is so
reminiscent of Roger Waters solo work specifically, that
it's wonderfully haunting.

aside from a comparison (please take that as a big
compliment, btw!), this song comes in low and stays
there. yet, while being low it hovers like a thick, heavy
smoke. your choice of words actually made me quite sad.
whether i could relate or whatever, they sunk in.

and while i wouldn't put this in a gathering of "chart
toppin' hits of the new millennium," this is one of those
songs you remember for a very long time.

an obvious piece of a much larger something. this is fine
work. glad i came across it tonight! thank you!

Yeah like this one alot... you're probably sick of hearing it by
now, but the Floyd comparison seems apt. Love the breathy
biz. Great stuff. 8888 DL

I think Pie said it best… &mdash 07/11/05 - 04:49:52 PM
… but I've been a bit slow on the uptake with your
stuff, even though Rebsie has been raving about it for
months. So this is my first serious attempt to listen
to your stuff… and I reckon I agree with Pie. Yep,
there's a hint of Bowie, a whole lot of Floyd, I can
hear a touch of Gabriel (his last album particularly),
but mostly late Waters-era Floyd. I like the singing
and I like the production. The song is good but feels
like the start of an album, something that will move
onto other stuff rather than a complete work in itself,
but again I think Mungo implied that already. Blast,
can't I think of anything original to type?…
Hippotamus… a ha! That's not appeared on this page
before! Sorted!

just exhale... &mdash 08/23/05 - 11:48:54 PM
great vocals...i agree that there are some elements of Pink Flyod, Bowie and Queen in the song but still very unique and creative...very passionate and breathless ending...i guess very few things in life are what they are supposed to be...and don't forget to inhale too
