Description:
This is a collaboration between atwood1956, kcsaito, iG.STUDiO, and drlaine. The piece is actually an extended version of "Summer Place," written by Tom Atwood, and originally released last month with Japanese pianist Keishi Saito (kcsaito). Some comments on that piece suggested it was too short, especially after the lengthy intro, so an extended version was written and performed with help from iG.STUDiO on tenor sax, drlaine on drums, kcsaito on additional piano, and atwood1956 on keyboards.

The new title, "fresh green in summer," came from a phrase in an email Keishi sent describing the photograph used as artwork for this piece. A lovely photo, and lovely music from each of those who agreed to help with this 'worldwide' collaboration.

(By the way, the World Jazz Project welcomes all newcomers. Our hope is that others will use this project to post jazz collaborations. Contact any of us. We're looking for work!)

Photo taken near Mt. Tanzawa (Japan)
by Keishi Saito, who describes it as a photo of 'fresh green in summer.'

This is such a nice texture, so delicate and unhurried. Like butterflies at dawn. The addition of the sax solo is marvelous. Wonderful mix and performances. However, the 2-chord groove doesn't lend itself to a good ending, and as you trade 4s between sax and piano, there is no playing off each other and the song sort of just stops. But while in the middle of it all, it is pure heaven.

Thanks Tobin. (I'm replying to your comments, although under this new format, I'm not sure exactly how to do it...) I would like to get Ilya and Keishi under the same roof together to record this. I think then they would have no problem trading 8s. The ending did prove problematic, might work better with a fade. Who wrote that 2-chord groove anyway?

Thanks &mdash 05/04/05 - 07:13:48 PM
Mcboy for giving this a listen before it was posted. We discussed your suggestion but since Ilya is sick and can't blow we decided to post as is and fade the heat.

Peter, Lily, SGF, thanks for listening and for your kind words.

I'm Looking Forward to Hearing More Songs from this Group &mdash 05/04/05 - 09:51:15 PM
Relaxing without being too smooth. I like the textures and the pace. For some reason I can't put my finger on, those repeating synth sounds (mostly in the first half and were in the original piece also) remind me of a revolving door.

The World Jazz Project thanks you, Mungo. Don't let the revolving door hit you on the way out...

nice and also different &mdash 05/05/05 - 01:59:09 PM
i like this very much ... especially the piano ... the drums appear to be nicely done as well ... the synthesizer sounds are coolness ... however i would have desired to hear the drums and bass combined with it earlier ...

and the sax solo is truly, truly SEXY! what a sound ... and excellent expressive in the playing ...

this piece appears to go from one episode to the next ... in a way that is free flowing ... at the first i did not think it "hung together" so well but as i listened further, it made better sense ...

pleasant work in the extreme!

Fantastic! &mdash 05/07/05 - 07:56:35 AM
I'm new, but coolest thing I've heard yet on MacJams.

A "9" in my book. Only a 9 because drlaine was buried in the mix!

Re: Fantastic! &mdash 05/07/05 - 10:11:37 AM
Thanks blues mongerer. We prefer to think of drlaine's drums as tastefully mixed, subtle, leaving one pining for more of his lovely brushwork. He is fantastic.

Just noticed this down to 7.6 &mdash 05/10/05 - 12:36:56 PM
The bombers have been all over the place. Lots of songs on
the WP list took big hits today. I can't believe this one has
been whittled down to a 7.6. Who really knows? No graph to
show the spread of votes.

This does add more substance &mdash 06/25/05 - 11:15:41 PM
Glad you got some more folks involved. Jazz needs to be
collaborative and organic. Ending sort of trails off w/o
resolution, but then again maybe so does summer :-)

Nice work guys.

A most excellent effort &mdash 10/12/05 - 01:20:23 AM
...of all involved. And a beautiful composition!
It is both impressive and inspiring to see what collaborations of this kind
can bring about--which of course encourages us here at the Noel Project
in our own endeavors.

(The name "World Jazz Project" has a nice 'ring' to it, too :)
