Description:
Greek mythology has always been a fancy of mine. This is the tale of the son of Minos, King of Knossos. He betrayed Poseidon who decided to punish him. Poseidon caused Minos' queen, Pasiphae to fall in love with a great, white bull. Pasiphae consumated her love with the bull, and her child was born with the body of a man and the head of a bull - he was the Minotaur. ::::

The sorrowful creature was banished in shame to an endless maze beneath the Palace of Knossos, called the Labyrinth. To please the gods, Minos was forced to sacrifice seven maidens and seven men to the Minotaur, in order to maintain peace on the island of Crete. ::::

The sins of the father are oft paid for by the son. This song is more than just about the myth, but you'll need to find meaning for yourself. My thanks for listening. I hope you enjoy.

Lyrics:
i am just the minotaur
all i want to do is play my guitar
so many stories that you wouldn't believe
i smell like sh!t and i'm covered with fleas

well, i am just the minotaur
daddy took things a little too far
shame and heartache were all i knew
mama gave birth to me in the zoo

so move on...
don't you know me?
i'm the one
who is not allowed to look at the sun

seven ladies came to make me smile
and seven dudes hung around for a while
they had a party in my bed
i gave a snort and i ripped them to shreds

so move on...
don't you know me?
i'm the one
who is not allowed to look at the sun

don't you need a friend?
don't you want a friend...
til the bitter end?
don't you need a friend?r

yeah, i am just the minotaur
i represent all of those you discard
i've got stories that you couldn't believe
i'm living somewhere underneath your steet

so move on...
don't you know me?
i'm the one
who is not allowed to see the sun

You've really got a very distinct style and lyrically you always have an interesting tale to tell. Your voice, guitar chops and songwriting click. Real nice

Great storytelling &mdash 05/07/05 - 04:47:17 AM
I love how you worked the myth into an allegorical tale about loneliness and "discarded people". Great melody, harmony, and lovely minimal bed. Wonderful work!

compelling harmonies, popsicle guiro &mdash 05/07/05 - 06:02:00 AM
Very nice piece, Mr. Boris. The chorus is especially intriguing with the close harmonies. I would give this high marks if I could vote.

Just beautiful &mdash 05/07/05 - 07:22:57 AM
It's the simplicity of the arrangement that makes this work so well ... it allows the harmonies to really resonate and brings out the lovely guitar tone. It's good on every level: cleverly written, beautifully performed, EQ just right, production very smooth, vocal harmonies nice and crisp. And I really love the middle section. This is very, very competent and the overall effect is soothing and lovely.

remarkabull! &mdash 05/07/05 - 09:05:03 AM
Some of the lines in this song are remarkabully precious, like the "seven dudes" part. Very unique and deep and I love the whole vibe. I have a little problem with the rhythm parts because they sound slightly off-the-beat, but maybe that's just my problem, and I'm probably being too nitpicky. Maybe that adds to the vibe that I'm liking, I don't know...

Great lyrics, concept, stotytelling &mdash 05/10/05 - 09:05:26 AM
What a fabulous concept, great choice of lyrics lines,
storytelling, wit and stylings. Nice over all sound design
and choices, altho more variations could be used,
especially in the chorus repeats toward the end. There are
moments that the timing between the guitar tracks and
the rest seems a hair off, when, to my ears, it needs to be
more precise. And the end is a little abrupt. But great
writing, great song. And I dig your voice.

Great lyrics, concept, storytelling &mdash 05/10/05 - 09:07:38 AM
(I need to check spelling first. Got too excited by the tune. Great
storytelling. Again.)

better and better &mdash 05/11/05 - 09:42:10 AM
Loved the snapping, your production values are improving
with every song. the vocs are clear and deep, the guitar
parts are simple yet they reverberate and drive the story.
Nice mix of effects on both the vocs and guitar. Thanks...

Really inventive. &mdash 05/11/05 - 11:46:25 AM
I skip a lot of songs with lyrics or I ignore them, but I love these here. Are you familiar with the songwriter Dan Bern? You remind me a bit of him, both in vocal tone and in the songwriting.

Probably the other commenters are right and the production is a tad rough, but it doesn't bother me here; I feel like I'm in a dark bar listening to a songwriter tell his stories.

No Bull! &mdash 05/12/05 - 09:17:53 AM
nice feel, great song. love the perpective from which this is written. was never a Greek Myth fan in school, but you've now got me interested. I agree with Tobin regarding the timing in some places but that's an easy thing to fix. The hard part is done, writting an excellent tune! Nice job with the make-shift guiro too!

Otherworldly &mdash 05/19/05 - 07:08:04 PM
Love the strange timbre of this thing, like circling the sun in
a dope induced haze. Very entertaining lyrics.

smooth songwriting &mdash 05/20/05 - 10:57:55 AM
I enjoyed the slightly quirky melody & beat, and nice
harmonies... but definitely liked your choice and
treatment of lyrics. Sympathy for the minotaur, in each of
us... The ending was a bit abrupt (I'd have preferred a final
da-da-dum on the guitar after the last words.) If you play
this live at Pompeii, it should knock 'em Deadalus.
ttfn,
Eduard

Another lovely song &mdash 05/20/05 - 09:27:21 PM
Yeah, this is great. It's got that coffeehouse feel with a slightly psychedelic mix. The emotional resonance is all there. Great job, Boris. --D

This song has been a favorite of mine &mdash 07/07/07 - 02:03:14 AM
since i first heard it. The fascinating thing for me is that your minotaur makes me feel kind of afraid ("they had a party in my bed, i gave a snort, then i ripped them to shreds, so move on..."), but at the same time i feel such empathy. I can relate to the minotaur. Also, as much as he's discarded and condemned, he seems to have this confidence in who he is, there is an acceptance and assertiveness. Well, that's my perception, anyway.

Strangely, i also find it a bit sexy or something... perhaps it's the way you sing it.
