Description:
Why play instruments....when you can use your kids? Once again, I videotaped my daugthers and used Wiretap to capture portions of audio from iMovie. The keyboard/piano sounds are played by Abby and Emma on an old Casio SK-1 and the vocal sounds are mainly Abby being squeezed and tickled (by me). You can also hear them both singing in a few areas. Some additional sounds were supplied by four manipulated drum loops, penciled-in bass and percussion, and me hitting a box. The photos were taken from the same video session (that's Abby on the left and Emma playing keyboard on the right).
Hardware:
Casio SK1, Digital Videocamera, Mac G4

iMovie, Wiretap, Timetoy, GarageBand

Home Horror Movies &mdash 05/09/05 - 06:59:52 PM
Kids as props. I'm all for it. Put them to good use. I was
prepared for this to resemble somebody's home movies,
but fortunately, it sounds more like Stun Nutz instead.
Has a nice nightmarish quality, sort of like home horror
movies.

sick! &mdash 05/09/05 - 08:48:13 PM
just so loose and exquisite.
like a jazzy b-side by the genius maniacs who usher
in the 'new sound' in 2065.
perfect use of samples! way to play your kids- the
deluded diva aspect of their voices perfectly contend
with the atmosphere and bass, and i still just can't
get over your grooves.
awesome bit, kat. [ Reply to This ]
You have a dream &mdash 05/10/05 - 06:09:50 AM
Had a dream. At work wearing my father's clothes, only
I'm still a kid, swimming in them, flapping long sleeves
like a seal and tripping on too long pants. Woke up. All
my life's journals and tapes and vrcs piled around me, my
life's work like walls of plastic. They tumble on top of me,
crushing. Killed by my life's work. Woke up again... [ Reply to This ]
very good &mdash 05/10/05 - 12:44:09 PM
You did a great job of picking out the right sounds from your
kids and editing them well. Very cool. Abby sounds like
some totally freaky instrument. It doesn't just sound like
something you made with the kids, it's like something (no
good words come to mind). [ Reply to This ]
the decline of jitterspook &mdash 05/11/05 - 10:10:51 AM
It's amazing to watch the progress of a piece like this,
which at one point was at the top of the weekly picks, and
then was slowly bombed and chipped away at without
comment. Twelve votes--six comments (two of them from
me). Guess all your fans got out early. Anyway, this was a
very original, unusual and possibly (child) abusive piece. [ Reply to This ]
the decline of jitterspook &mdash 05/11/05 - 11:52:47 AM
Thanks for the continued support, Tom! Yeah I knew this wouldn't last
long at the top... I hope it stays on the list, at least. It seems when tunes
fall off the weekly pics, they rarely ever get visited anymore. I am glad
to see the rating scheme back, though. I always like seeing what floats
to the top of the list. [ Reply to This ]
Oh...my...god.... &mdash 05/11/05 - 11:49:16 AM
This was a whole horror movie in one song. Much scarier than The Ring. [ Reply to This ]
Whoa Hoa! &mdash 05/12/05 - 09:10:26 PM
I haven't even listened to it yet, but you got an SK-1? You
been holdin' out on us, Stun! Ahhh....Casio SK-1. How
many lunchtimes did my friends and I go to the Radio
Shack and piss the HELL out of the salesmen by sampling
ourselves saying bad words or burping. Awesome. There
better be some sampled burping on the track. Well , I'll
forgive you if there isn't. [ Reply to This ]
Great job. &mdash 05/18/05 - 09:22:13 PM
Awesome vocals, kids &mdash 05/19/05 - 06:44:40 PM
Nice going Stun. This really made me think of Dali paintings for some reason. It could easily be mistaken for one of the better Negativland tracks, which I think is a good thing. --D [ Reply to This ]
Interesting &mdash 05/23/05 - 06:20:52 AM
To say the least! This is not scary at all to me, but instead
crazy and full of life. The bass is almost like the great Aorta
trying to keep sounds and FX in balance. I've done similar
things with my daughter and keeps reminding myself that
kids don't have boundaries on sound scapes like us adults
does.
Great work!

More cool... &mdash 05/27/05 - 07:40:10 PM
I thought I'd never say it, because it can seem lacking at
times however, "this is very coo!". First of all, you have
two very beautiful daughters and BONUS, the fact that
you get to have this kind of creative fun with them and
them with you, is even more cool! I was kind of down a
little and this tune pulled me up out of a bit of a funk. I'm
smiling as I'm typing... Great job! Keep up the fun about it

Yikes! &mdash 06/03/05 - 11:19:44 AM
Again, Stunner, you never cease to amaze me.
Your kids are gonna need therapy when they hear this for the first time.
I love it. [ Reply to This ]
Yikes! &mdash 07/03/05 - 01:58:17 PM
I love the atmospheric sounds that this one has. I would have liked to hear a
little more rhythym in the drums and the bass (the pulse of the song) but then
that may have pulled away from the focus of the piece. I like it, and it is now one
of my favorites.

Cool all around. &mdash 07/11/05 - 02:04:56 AM
It's a cool piece. I like it. It reminds me a little of
something Keff McCulloch did when he combined party
sounds he recorded & incidental music he wrote for Silver
Nemesis (Doctor Who episode from the 80s featuring
Cybermen). Hmm, have you thought of doing a horn mix
with this? It would be kind of interesting. [ Reply to This ]
title &mdash 10/20/05 - 05:21:29 PM
It begins as music concrete and then you add a funky but disturbing
groove under it, that builds slowly. It also has a kind of b-movie horror
soundtrack sound. Your music seems to be a vortex of blending and
disassembling. I'm really enjoying it. [ Reply to This ]
wow. &mdash 11/22/05 - 02:42:38 AM
this is sorta creepy. i loved everything about it. i have often thought of doing something of the like with my kids. wonderful wonderful listen......... [ Reply to This ]

Fantastic. Fascinating. Imaginative. Wild. Weird.
Wonderful, in a sort of, 'guess I won't sleep tonight' sort of way...

your picture totally freaked me out. I can't look at it...it.. it's... it's *creepy*.
so is the song, but I like it. The beat is pretty friggin sweet. doo doo doo bum CHHHHH doo doo CHH dum dum
and that bass in there adds to things very nicely
and then you've got some weird smashing sounds, or something?
a very good combination of sounds. [ Reply to This ]
