Description:
For Katherine.

I was listening to Jailbird by Fairy Beth and really digging the simplicity and honesty of it.

I gave myself two hours to record and submit this song. If I hadn't, it would have been a long time before I'd have a new song ready for MacJams.

So here it is. Just me and my guitar. This is how most of my songs come about and remain...

Lyrics:
I think you know how I feel
Whether I tell you or not
Your silent voice is beautiful
And it makes everything I’ve got
Pale into insignificance

The music’s in the mail
And I forget where I am
I look up at the stars and I
I’m upside down again
I want to share with you
The cleanest air I’ve ever breathed

I’m in my house now but I feel
Lost a thousand miles from home
You’ve let yourself into a place
That I didn’t know I owned
Well can you let me in with you

The music’s in the mail
And I forget where I am
I look up at the stars and I
I’m upside down again
I want to share with you
The cleanest air I’ve ever breathed

I’d never seen it
But I see it now
I’d never felt it
But I feel it now

There’s so much I need to say
But it won’t translate into words
And all day every single day
I think about you until it hurts
But I will take the pain for you
Yeh I will take the pain

The music’s in the mail
And I forget where I am
I look up at the stars and I
I’m upside down again
I want to share with you
The cleanest air I’ve ever breathed

The music’s all around
And it speaks to me I’m sure
And everything’s more beautiful
Than it ever was before
I want to be with you
And begin the life I’m dying for

I could stand more like this &mdash 05/11/05 - 10:27:00 AM
So maybe this trend will take hold, just simple recordings of people with their guitars. But this shows off your spot-on singing and compostitional talent. Great song, well recorded, well performed. I liked the harmony in the bridge and would have liked a reprise of the bridge at the end. But I'm glad you didn't over-think this, it's fresh!

Thanks Jim. I'm glad you liked the song. I could stand more guitar and vocal
songs too.

Simple & Great &mdash 05/11/05 - 11:26:38 AM
Sometimes some of the most powerful songs are the
simplest. Singing is wonderful, lyrics are suberb. The
vocalizing during the
'I%u2019d never seen it
But I see it now'
Is very good.
BTW: Your 'Unobtainable Remedy" is still one of my
ALL-TIME top Macjam songs. I like all your work!

Remedy. That's really nice to hear.

Great song, Nolan! You know you have a well written song
when it can sound so complete just as voice and guitar. It's
funny, over just the past couple of days I've been thinking
going back to my pre-GB roots and recording a simple
guitar/vox song too. While I love doing the big productions
in GB I do sometimes miss the simplicity and honesty of just
singing while strumming it out on my guitar like this.

Thanks for sharing this great song.

Thanks for listening PG. And let me know when you've done an acoustic
guitar number. I'm looking forward to it.

Only the strongest... &mdash 05/12/05 - 09:43:28 AM
Vocals and Guitar playing could carry a tune such as this. That is exactly what you have, a strong talent.

The best part about simplicity is you can really hear the vocals and the guitar clearly.

DL/9s!

I should put it out there so bare. Now I'm glad I did.

Front and center &mdash 05/12/05 - 11:16:08 AM
Song writier, front and center. Love it. The best of all
your stuff so far. Very nice swung feel, hip groove,
excellent performance. Poetic, personal lyrics with a great
mix of clean strong phrases, ambiguity, details and
generalizations. Only criticism is about the way the lyrics
repeat the same ideas a bit too much. In a song this
intimately performed, I like less repeats, which I associate
with pop music writing. But this is a great track.
Wonderful writing, superb performance.

Appreciate that, Tobin. The repetition is probably indicative of my state of
mind at the time: Very one-tracked.

Good line &mdash 05/12/05 - 12:14:58 PM
Good line - "I look up at the stars and I

Serious Talent &mdash 05/13/05 - 06:45:50 PM
Once again Nolan, you continue to support my belief that
you have all the elements of a world class success. To sit
and write a tune in 2 hours, play flawlessly and sing so
smoothly....makes us mortals stand in awe....kind of like
watching Tiger Woods hit a golf ball....just makes you
shake your head in amazement. Thanks so much for
sharing your gifts with us....it's a wonderful thing to
behold.

Serious Talent &mdash 05/14/05 - 04:07:08 AM
Thanks Synco. I wish I could say I wrote it and recorded it in a couple of
hours. I didn't, I'm afraid. I wrote it a couple of years ago. I gave myself two
hours to record it and upload it to MacJams. Not as impressive, I know.

That's almost a full Album &mdash 05/17/05 - 01:37:19 PM
Hi Nolan,

Managed to find this before it goes off weekly picks for a
change! Another rather nice song, melancholy but sweet.
Guitar intro a wee bit like wonderwall by Oasis, which is
no bad thing. Downloaded and on the iPod.

BTW playing tunes to my wifes pregnant tummy (5 weeks
to go!), and thought I'd include my fave Nolan track
'Nothing of it'. Very relaxed response from bump, a slow
grooving. I snese this may be a relaxation song for the
three of us. As will this one!

Nice one mate,
Kev

Oooh. &mdash 05/18/05 - 01:54:41 AM
Intimate and real. Very nice. I always found that when I
thought too hard and long on a song, it doesn't come out
as natural. This proves that great things can happen when
you just let go. You may have only taken a couple hours,
but you certaily wrote a great song. This is well crafted,
well played, and well sung.

Speakin' o' harkin'... &mdash 06/16/05 - 07:10:00 PM
...for me this harkens to Neil Finn/Crowded House...

This is a great song and well sung. It's solid, solid, solid.

Just found it! &mdash 07/16/05 - 12:12:22 AM
Just found this song after your post on my song. This is a
lovely piece - I wouldn't dare just go with guitar and
voice. Good to hear someone pull it off so competently
and with such a pure result. Good to see another Maton
out there in MJ land!

Great tune, great performance!

Starts off like 'Wonderwall' by Oasis… &mdash 07/30/05 - 05:27:55 PM
… and I like the start to that track but the rest of it is
awful… but then I hate Oasis, so there you go. This,
on the other hand, starts like 'Wonderwall' but
thankfully never descends into the pure awfulness of
that dreadful piece of overrated Gallagher Brothers
nonsense. Sorry, do I sound like I have issues?
Anyway, my overall point is that this is great,
particularly given how long it took you to record. You
wouldn't want to hear what I came up with after only
two hours of me alone with a guitar! Nice one, Nolan.
