I loved Joni and her music and got to see her in concert. One of my most embarrassing moments as a musician was when I met a girl who wanted to sing Joni songs and I volunteered my guitar to accompany her as I found her quite attractive. I thought I was going to sweep her off her feet with my expertise. But alas, even armed with a Joni songbook with chords, I found myself unable to even halfway make the songs sound right. This despite the fact I had heard them many times. I will never forget the look that girl gave me as I slunk into the night. It was then that I realized that I was a simple, somewhat primitive musician and should stick to blues, easy folk and three chord rock. Better to do something simple well then to fall flat on your butt trying to do something like Joni's jazzy songs.
