just one example of a big picture viewpoint:

the interplay between water and stone is something to think about.

they operate at totally different time scales.

those time scales far exceed our tiny lifetimes, so just ignore our perspective entirely for a moment.

"short term" - the stones in a stream direct the water's path. occasionally, a giant flood might actually move the stones, but generally, that never happens.

yet "long term" - the water erodes the stones and carves them, perhaps even eliminating them entirely. giant rivers and canyons result. water generally always wins.

all this stuff happens in time scales that far exceed our experience. we never see any of these things happen, except in minute detail.

i find it wonderful, amazing, humbling, and just plain great.

and it's nice to dip one's toes in a frigid mountain stream, just to appreciate all that.
