Is MJ slowly dissolving?

Take care out there,

Peter

Yes, someone hasn't paid the bills over there of late.
Does iComp go off radar very often?

Peter.

Technically speaking, the presence or absence of an SSL (TLS ...) certificate does not make a particular site “safe,” or not.   The thing that’s driving the push to make all sites use SSL is basically “the latest fashion adopted by browser manufacturers,” and the availability of services like letsencrypt.org which can produce a certain type of certificate for free.   But the only thing that this actually buys you is the ability to see that the certificate corresponds to the site URL.   Unless you have something sensitive that actually needs protection, which MJ does not have, SSL is not necessary – except that web-browsers now will “carp” if you don’t use it.

Ironically, I think that this will actually serve to imbue the end-user with a false sense of “safeness,” born of “padlock icon equals ‘safe.’”   Obviously, the true warm-fuzzy-feeling “safeness” of a site strictly depends on what it sends to your browser and what your browser does with it – not that the connection to that site is or is not encrypted.   Sites that serve-up kiddie porn (probably) now obligingly use SSL ... and, so what.   You still wouldn’t want your twelve-year old daughter to go there.

MJ presently uses (LetsEncrypt) certificates for some pages but not for all.   The programming should be changed to use SSL for all pages.   But it’s not quite as simple as it seems, especially for software of this age.

I contacted Simon about the expired certificate and he took care of it within less than a day, despite the fact that he was apparently on a vacation.

But I wouldn't anticipate any major work on this site in the near future. I don't presume to know why Simon and Miguel choose to keep this site up and running, although I appreciate the fact that they do.

Simon is deeply dedicated, devoted and active in his sustainable resources work and I imagine MJ is merely an occasional distraction at this point in his life. Given that fact, I appreciate that he is still willing to step in when problems arise.

I am always grateful that Simon took the time to create this site. If it occasionally has a problem or two then I always remind myself of how much I have paid for it's upkeep. All the enjoyment I have had over the years and never had to pay a penny. You really can't beat it.
