Let's Get Stoned (From Baton Rouge to New Orleans)

Get Flash to see this player.

A while back I posted a peppy little song called Creole Dreams which could have been used by the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce to bring in tourisim. I said at the time it was another in my love/hate relationship with my home state. If so that was the love and this must be the hate. The Jimmy Davis connection is that he was a country singer and former governor of Louisiana that I met because he and my mother were in the hospital at the same time on the same floor right next to each other. Jimmy was best known as the writer of the song You Are My Sunshine. I always thought it was funny that the song Louisiana was most known for was about sunshine when it was cloudy all the time in South Louisiana where I grew up. Later on as the chemical and oil industry grew in the state, not all the clouds were natural.

I was riding down that river road, trying to breathe that heavy air
When ole Ronnie Babin said, "Let's go get stoned"
From Baton Rouge to New Orleans, it's a nightmare chemical scene
One plant after another just spewing out toxic waste

Smog so thick, cut it with a knife, serve it for breakfast and end your life
Louisiana sunshine, just like Jimmy Davis sang
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you, don't take my sunshine away

Some call it grass, some call it weed, for some it's a habit that other's don't need
But one thing's for certain, we're going to get stoned!

Hey neighbor
Been over the whole N'awlins/BR area (sometimes sober).
Totally get the whole love/hate relationship with your state
(Mis'sippi here). Not a big blues fan, but love this. Great
lyrics and some nice guitar work. Gonna go back now and
check out your Creole Dreams. Nicely done.

Hey neighbor
Back at you jgurner! Yep, Mississippi has a lot of the same contradictions that
LA does. Beautiful piney woods and then all of a sudden, paper plant. Oh
yeah, worst smell in the entire universe! And we also share that wonderfully
corrupt institution they so jokingly call law enforcement! It's no wonder that
the deep south has created so many great singers, writers and lunatics at the
same time.

back to your roots
Very enjoyable piece, Tom. I especially like the way you
lifted "You Ae My Sunshine" and dropped it right into this
gray blues tune. Excellent pace, patience, slide. Well done.

Smog for breakfast
True - without perky and sweet it is hard to rack up big numbers here, but it is good to have artists posting post-perky material that is short on sentimentality and long in integrity. That very thing makes this an atractive hunk of music, solidly rooted in its Southern soil, yet fluid as those river riffs running through those dobro solos.
Thanks for sharing a bit of background on "You are My Sunshine." I have often wondered about its origins. Also, I often have been surprised by the number of people who mistakenly think it is a "happy" song, because they read no further than the title. I once attended a wedding where they used it as one of the ceremony songs, which struck me as particularly odd.

Smog for breakfast
Hey Warren, I would have to agree. People usually only take lyrics at face
value and don't see the intent or overall picture of what's going on.
"Sunshine" can definitely be seen as a breakup song if you really listen to the
lyrics. And knowing Jimmy Davis's colorful past, it probably was.

Pass the bong ...
Love the twangy psychedelic guitar and dreamy pace. I
know recent events have given a horrible new dimension
to the chemical plants and their toxic waste ... but it's a
great atmospheric song. Very enjoyable, great vibe.

Brilliant song...
Dripping with irony and bitterness; and a whole scene laid
out for us. And a tinge of prophecy about it too, it turns
out, sadly.

Brilliant song...
Hey William, thanks for the kind remarks! I thought about the prophecy thing
too. The fact that I wrote about that aspect of Louisiana just weeks before
New Orleans drowned in what they call a toxic soup is a little chilling! I've had
songs that made no sense to me when I wrote them but years later seemed to
have at least partly come true but this was in a whole nother category. I guess
the only thing I can say is that the older you get, the stranger life seems.

Great sound, great playing
How was the lyric awkward and likewise, what made the song otherwise
great? More feedback helps when you do the next one.

Has me gaspin in the backseat. I like the way you kept things light with the lyrics and lead picking guitar work. Perfect for the hot summer nights I yearn for. Cruzin with the top down. tasty

I love to play guitar. I have been writing songs for many years and have a large catalog by this time. Songwriting is easy. Writing great songs is hard! Born in Louisiana and live in Texas. I grew up on Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky, Little Richard ... [see more]
