Description
The first medieval song I composed - Now is the Time of Winter tells of the onset of winter. Unfortunately, I have no way of putting a backing track on, so you just have to make do with me singing! ;)

Lyrics
Now is the time of winter,
When ice and snow abound,
And the wind howls cold through the empty trees,
And the frost blankets the ground.

So light a fire ye merry men,
Light and keep it bright
Burning through the darkest hours,
Shining in the night.

The ground outside is growing hard,
Rivers have turned to stone
A single leaf still clings to a branch
Shivering all alone.

The lakes have turned to icy glass,
The sky to a frosty grey,
The wind howls with the wild wolves,
And the night has conquered day.

That's delightful!
Very promising! Do you mind if I add some instruments?

Very pretty song! I'd love to hear someone help you with
some simple backup and mixing. I love the light airy feel
to your voice. Unfortunately the breathiness distorts the
sound a bit here and there. If you are usind a pinhole mic,
you might want to try putting a stocking in betwwen you
and the mic to filter out some of the noise. (That's what
usually have to do...) This could be stunning with a clear
recording. Thanks for posting it for us to hear!

Gives me the shivers!
I think you really captured the feel of winter. Your absence of backing tracks is like the empitness you feel when you see the barren trees. I like your voice. It's not perfectly sung, but I think it's a good thing. I can identify with it.

welcome to MacJams!
This is a nice start, with this song!
As has been said in earlier comments, getting your voice and the mic coordinated for the best possible sound would greatly help with this piece and others you'll do in the future. A pop filter is one, so might be testing out mic levels, distance from the mic, etc.

Do write and post more--am looking forward to hearing what cjhoose does with instrumentation on this!

this is lovely
I really love the simplicity of this. I don't really know
much about the genre, but the way that you bend the
notes down at the end of the first and third lines of each
stanza sounds "modern" to my ears. I could be totally
off base there.

Nicely done.

Invite some remakes of this one...
You have a good melody going here... I can hear this with
a better recorded vocal, and with other vocals alongside,
and I can hear this with other instruments...

Get a good mic...

If you could turn cjhoose loose on an instrumental track,
and then get her, Emily and Mysti turned loose on THAT,
you'd be rolling in 9's... Or get atwood to orchestrate it...

Heck, get twelve different versions posted...

Do you have chord sheets or lead sheets or anything for
this? Nice song, got that Lyke-Wake Dirge sort of forlorn
vibe to it... Although the former is probably on the
Christian side of the line, come to think of it...ah well,
forlorn is forlorn...

Lighting a fire
Good job! I like it. I'm sure you'll get some development
on this. Who knows...maybe I'll jump in with some ideas.
Begs for mandolin, flute and tambourine! Keep practicing
your singing. Imagine that you are pulling a silk tether
through an airy glade.

Better that you are a medieval composer than a meaty, evil
composer.

Nice one

I like the stark minimalism of this with just your
voice...very evocative of the mood suggested by the lyrics
. hmm... I think you might just possibly have got one of
those rare, original, soulful , quirky - in a - nice way ,
unique .genre & style transcending voice things
happening there. Nice one elvendaughter..keep ' em
coming.
