Flying On Broken Wings (collaboration with Audiologic)

Description
This is my favorite jam from the vast musical catalog of Audiologic (Ben Riordan, also the artist formerly known as Walkingstick). When he revealed the story behind it, I knew that this poignant song begged for lyrics to express the anger, frustration and hope in the face of failure. It is a song with a message that we can all relate to.

Don't miss the ending. It's the best part.

Lyrics
MISPLACED (Flying On Broken Wings)
music and instruments by Audiologic;
lyrics and vocals by Leon

1
There comes a time when the sun doesn't shine
There comes a day when the clouds turn gray
And in your life the darkness finds its way
Then you realize that everything's in disarray

2
There comes a time when you try to fly
But when you try to spread your wings
You find that they are broken
There comes a time when you feel you wanna cry
but you gather up your courage before tears start falling

REF 1
Sometimes life has no answer to our "why?"
Even if you dream and dare to try
You rise up to face the danger
But you'll never find the answer
in the midst of anger

3
There comes a time you'll have to fulfill your fate
There comes a day to leave the past without a trace
There comes a time when you've fallen out of grace
And everything you've felt and
done seem all misplaced...

(repeat REF 1)

4
So up high your hurting spirit soars
In your wounded heart a lion roars

REF 2
You feel the heat well up in your heart
and you know you have the strength
to make a brand new start
So you look way up to the sky
Aiming for the stars up high
Even though it hurts to fly

(higher...and higher...and higher...)

5
There comes a time life comes up with a challenge
And you can't find the reason to stop the confusion
There comes a day when you fall to the ground
And you search into your soul to find an inspiration

REF 3
You feel the passion deep in your heart
and you know you have the strength
to make a brand new start
So fly and fly...
high and high...
find your place under the sun
under the big blue sky
and when all is said is done
your pain, your fear... is gone...

As I'm so used to hearing the instrumental...
it's quite a shock to hear vocals on this song. But you do a fine job.

Thanks for the comment, cj. Sorry if I messed it up a little bit for you :-) I really
think it is a wonderful instrumental, and I was careful the lyrics and vocals will
still carry the essence of the song.

not too messed up...
After a couple listens all is well!

Lyrics are just right (although my Scot blood squirms at "You'll never find the
answer in the midst of anger" ;). Very impressive.
You're vocals are also good - almost *too* professional for my taste. Sounds
best when you get more than one track - very strong.

Now... to make this complete... some heavy distorted bass... :)

The lyrics are beautifully written.
You were right about writing about my situation at the time. Everything is
so well placed. I love the name of this too. The message is very powerfull
and inspirational which your vocals also reflect. You really did a great job
on this Leon. I am honored that you chose my music to sing with.

The lyrics are beautifully written.
This is embarassing, but I will say it anyway. My eyes were kinda watery when
I listened to this. Such a great job.

The lyrics are beautifully written.
I am quite relieved that you liked it, Ben. Actually, I could relate to the song so
much it was as if I was writing about my own situation not too long ago. But I
thought the song is even more apt for you as you literally have wings (as a pilot).

nice singing
like the intro, like the coming in of the selected instruments and more
voicings. Like how you stucture the tune. Nice use of drums aournd 2:00
though minimal instruments in sounds cool when the other instruments
walk along with it. NIce high singing wow (around 3:00 !!

Wish I could sing that high! :) That is gift few males have here at MJ I
think. Reminds me of Steve Perry.

Thanks for sharing

nice singing
Tiler, my response to you is below... Thanks! I'm humbled for you to say I sound a little like Steve Perry. I do not have his rock edge though :-) Walkingstick's music is making me try New Age for the first time and I love it.

I can totally relate to this song.
Beautiful.. beautiful.. all the way around. The drum beat is exceptional in how it adds to the words and meaning of the song. Thank you for sharing. ~b

I can totally relate to this song.
Thanks, that was very generous! Walkingstick did a marvelous job on all instruments, particularly the drums. Even before I placed the vocals, this music gives me the goosebumps.

Hey Leon!
Great Job wih this song...I feel this has real commercial potential and I like
that it has such a positive tone at the end....I would recommend
rerecording it with a good mic and preamp (the Vocals) and then sending
it to one of the music companies....Or compile nine more like it, put it on
a CD with CD baby and have them sell it for download...I don't know if
they take singles, but you could ask them....Great job to you and
Walkingstick!
Peace and Light to you both....digitalnirvana9

Hey Leon!
Thanks for the generous praise. This is all for fun but wouldn't it be great to
make even a little out of it? Would be nice to explore that possibility. Thanks
for your thoughtful observations and recommendations!

Nicely done
This one was a good one of walkingstick's to use. It's a very powerful
piece. You've done a great job od adding to it, Leon. The lyrics are very
poignant and you sing them with a lot of power and emotion. Your vocals
sound great, especially when the harmonies kick in. And I'm glad I'm not
the only one using a Radioshack mic. :) Enjoyed it very much.

Nicely done
Thanks, Jgurner, for taking the time to listen to this song. Your positive
comments mean so much. Ben is an awesome talent and i thank him for
allowing me to sing on his music.

As regards the mic, Radioshack cheapskate users unite! Ha-ha! I don't know
what model of Radioshack mic yours is, but mine is dirt-cheap ($32 on sale!),
and good as the recorded vocals may be, I admit there is room for it to even
sound better.

Someone recommended that I should re-record the vocals with a pro-level
mic to make it commercial quality. I took that suggestion seriously and I just
posted a question in the forum regarding any recommendations for (gasp!) a
more expensive mic, but not one that is pricey enough for me to sell my
kidney on eBay. :-)

Again thanks for listening and posting your valued comments. :)

Wow, nice writing!
Ben's soundbed was great, but your lyrics and choice of melody &
harmony, as well as your smooth strong voice really "soared" on this.
Very well done! Yes, a very good melding of two great talents!

Wow, nice writing!
With a masterpiece background like this from Walkingstick, it's really hard to
make a mess of this song even if i tried. My vocals are simply an adornment on
an already very impressive instrumental.

Thanks so much, Drak. Your comments really mean a lot.

wow man, this is great. You can really wail. I like your harmonies, I like
your tone. Everything seems to be in place here. This is a solid
production.

Awed...
not the word I'm looking for, but my thesaurus won't give me anything
better... The emotion-laden songbed and your choice of harmonies...
chills...

The only technical thing I would critique (and this is just sake of
improving the instrument) is be careful with enunciation. A select few
parts sounded a little closed off, vocally. (these words my vocal coach
used on me many times) In some places it helped to add to the drama
of the piece, in others it drew attention and took me out of the ride for
a moment- very short moments. You have an incredible voice.

Just for the record, this critique was all I became aware of after
listening to it 8 or 9 hundred times. It's wonderful to find music that
can still deliver chills and goosebumps after a few dozen listenings...

Within great adversity, lies great opporunity...

Thank you both, for sharing this...

Let me have your voice. . .
Wow. I don't think I can add much to the stellar praise that you have
already recieved. . but this is really great stuff. I know I'm no musical
veteran (i'm so new. lol) but perhaps it means something that your music
touches both the rookies and pros alike.

Easily a favorite.

excellent
Great job guys. An excellent collab.

Ben: The backing tracks are lush and inviting. Well mixed and
rythymically interesting. You keep it right on the edge of several cool
genre's all at once. Kudo's

Leon: what a great friggin voice you have! the "wailing" thing where you
drag out lines is impressive as all git out. Really awesome what you did
here. Lyrically and Vocally. Outstanding.
