Lyrics
Unbalanced

I can’t believe what my eyes are telling me
unbalanced, unbalanced
you look at me, I’m not the man I used to be
unbalanced, unbalanced
pulled by the whispers and wavelengths
dashed upon the rocks and stones
do I have to die to remember, who used to live in these bones
do - I - have - to - die
eye’s open, eye’s closed
I can’t remember what I don’t know
eye’s open, eye’s shut
yesterday’s leaving me
have I lost all touch
Unbalanced - Unbalanced
some - times - you - can’t - believe - what you see
what does it mean, these visions cutting into me
unbalanced, unbalanced
in this in between, am I awake or fast asleep
unbalanced, unbalanced
pushed by the freakish and fearful
burnt upon a bed of white noise
do I have to die to remember, everything I’ve destroyed
do - I - have - to - die
eye’s open, eye’s closed
I can’t remember what I don’t know
eye’s open, eye’s shut
yesterday’s leaving me
eye’s open, eye’s closed
I can’t defend what I don’t know
eye’s open, eye’s shut
tomorrow is leaving me
have I lost all touch
Unbalanced - Unbalanced
do - I - have - to - die - to remember

What a great track. Excellently performed. Both music and singing. Has
many interesting shifts in mood. Nice. Production is just unbelieveably
good.
Mr. Sil-VER: just top notch all the way around
Mr. I. Spike: I'm glad you're keeping that thoroughbred voice in fine

Really nice balance (yes, indeed!) between the instrumental and vocals.
Excellent instrumental, SilVER! :)

Great use of panning for the fab vocals, Mr Spike.

Eurhythmically challenged
At least I was. Can imagine Annie (Lennox) and Dave (Stewart) doing a
version of this. Absolutely superb vocals, tight hard (?) backing has a sort
of 80's and yet modern feel to it.

A hit in any of the last three decades.

core said 4976 days ago (December 4th, 2005)
Great performance, but lack of originality
Compared to what is currently going on in the electronic music field, I
find this piece almost retro. It's not eighties, it is more nineties.

Don't get me wrong. The vocals are excellent performed and there is
nothing wrong with the production from a technical point of view. The
problem of this song is that it has nothing inspiring, nothing that goes
beyond a general "me too" feeling. To me it feels like the soundtrack to
the movie "Fire And Ice". It is kind of sensationalizing itself, lingering
between genres, incorporating rock elements... It's not clearly trance or
breaks or anything. I wouldn't even say it's an electronic track, it's
more a classic pop song.

I want to encourage you to get it going and produce more, but trying
to find clear themes. Not for the sake of following a genre, but by
trying to improve on it. Where is the message of your song? I'm not
talking about its lyrics, which are vague enough. This is not a matter of
taste or like and dislike (cause by its drive and power I like your song),
it is a question of what distinguishes this song in terms of originality.

Great performance, but lack of originality
Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. I appreciate that you
have taken the time to articulate you point, I hope that I can respond as
clearly.

I agree, I think it has a bit of a "retro" feel to it.
I don't know the movie you speak of, but the track also reminded me of a
movie soundtrack as well. So there's two things we agree on.

You say it's not clearly defining itself, yet you also state it's a classic pop
song. Sensationalizing itself... hmmm... not quite sure where you are
coming form with both those points...

Here's the real rub. What is original anymore? If you were to play me
something you thought was breaking new ground, I night come back with -
"Well yeah, but it sounds like a bit of gypsy jazz mixed with island music on a
plate of rock roots." Sonically, harmonically, melodically, are we not just
recycling the bits and pieces that float around in the ether?

Also something to note: Silver creates the music bed and gives it to me with
no instruction other than, write a melody and lyrics. This makes for an
interesting yet disjointed collaboration. I'm just trying to find something that
sounds and feels somewhat appropriate for the track. I think there is much
more control of purpose when you work by yourself or with another person in
the same three dimensional space.

So as not to misread the tenor of this response, I truly appreciate your
comments and look forward to your insight in the future.

Ciao amico!

Great performance, but lack of originality
You asked what I find original. If you like, listen to:

- The latest recordings of Björk, including Vespertine
- Aphex Twin
- Boards of Canada

And most of these are not even new. Also, Lamb for an example was pretty
innovative, as was Massive Attack at their time, by crossing borders between
Jazz and Electronica.

But the point about innovation or "new" is not about "creating a
breathtakingly new approach". It starts in the little things. To be specific
about this track, I think it is a solid production, but it doesn't come up to an
original approach within the genre of electronic dance music.

It is important for you to understand that with this I don't mean it doesn't
work as what it is, a dance music track. Take Madonna's latest billboard chart
entry. I already read she is still "innovating" herself. Nobody talks about the
fact she is using a seventies synthesizer fragment and that her dance music is
not played in clubs where progressive house and house DJ's play music. Her
song resembles a disco track and reminds some town disco visitors of dance
music, and perhaps it is played also in a cheap disco in Ibiza, but it is not a
track that's going to make it in a club staring people like Sasha or any other
Bedrock artist.

There are millions of artists out there and standing out is a tricky business. I
myself have not even started to attempt competing with professional
musicians. I find Beck pretty innovative occasionally, and he has shown talent
to outgrow his own style, truely recreating his sound over the past couple of
years. But that doesn't change the fact he is not comparable to a Jimmy
Hendrix, or to Prince even, who both changed music history.

Like I said in the beginning of this reply. Innovation starts in a way of trying
to find undiscovered land. Sometimes this approach is already all it needs.

And it's true, there's nothing wrong with retro. I never said it was.

I'm compelled to comment on the vocal performance...truly incredible. Mr. Spike is obviously a trained singer (or very naturally gifted). His approach into his upper register shows a great deal of technical skill, a skill that goes beyond the typical hobbyist who does this for fun. Great job!

More innovative artists
When I had closed my reply, one name after another popped up in my
mind:

Sigur Ros
Funkstrung
Goldfrapp
Fischerspooner
Roisin Murphy
T.Raumschmiede
Gorillaz
Tricky
Tarwater
John Digweed
Lamb
Radiohead
...

All of these have been innovative in their genre, bringing a new
refreshing sound to it. Not all at the same rate, and one does not have
to like all of them, but they all were or are improving and pushing the
boundaries on popular music.

Having said that, I understand that making music is not always about
creating a new sound or new feel to it. Sometimes it's just about
recitation, or recreation of what we know best, and that's good for
those who like it. Moby has been very successful recreating this retro
dance sound of his. So was Air... The list goes on and on.

Personally I just have the feeling the market for dance music is
swamped with "things alike" sometimes, and if you watch the lists of
what is popular in dance music, what is played by DJ's out there, it's
not equal to what is played in the top fourties.

For a pop tune your track is nice and decent, I just personally find it a
little bit overrated, given the originality factor. But I already said what I
thought about it and I think I also made enough positive comments.

The critique I wrote was not meant to be disencouraging, I wanted to
help you to learn more about composition (as your production seems
fine), just like I learn more by exchange with other musicians on this
site.

Confused
try exporting the midi into a better sampler, the reason piano is DEAD!
The song confused me in many parts, the vocals are very 80's as well as
the entire song, though the mixing polished a turd. Ahh the beauty of
reverb & delay. Sounds like the budweiser commercials. "Real Men of
Genius" got a good laugh there. Nice effort.

For Those of Us...
who aren't quite so focused on le dernier cri and who, instead, tend to
be more attuned to minutiae such as musicianship and performance,
this is an excellent piece of work --- regardless of which era or genre
it may suggest to a listener.

While I can appreciate both the artistic and pragmatic merits of the
arguments suggesting musicians should seek "new ground" in their
work, in the broad spectrum of extant music there is room for most
every kind of work. I think the largest space exists for pieces like this,
which are exceptionally well-done.

I agree with chikoppi... Lou Gramm sound, for sure. High praise. One
of the most distinctive rock voices of the 80s and one of my all-time
favorites.

This is exceptionally well-orchestrated, well-played, performed and
engineered. I think it might have benefitted from a soaring, sensuous
lead guitar part, but that's about as close to constructive criticism as I
would care to make.

Great job, guys.
