Seek Ye First (White Hawks)

Get Flash to see this player.

Months ago a 15-year-old MacJammer, White Hawks, posted a MIDI version of "Seek Ye First." In the song, she also used a vocal transformer to raise the pitch of her voice. After listening to it I suggested that the piece might be better with her real voice and real instruments, and offered to add guitar and some harmony. I sent her two versions, one with just guitar and vocals, and one with some fluttering flutes that were (are) part of my fluttering flute phase. Jemimah (White Hawks) wisely chose the simpler version, which has inspired many who have listened. It has more than 1,000 hits and 100 downloads. Not bad for a 15-year-old!

Well, today, Jemimah turns 16. So, I have decided to release the other version of "Seek Ye First" in honor of my favorite MacJams teenager. Her love of hymns, and her love of God, is a joy for an old man like me to behold.

Happy Birthday, Jem!

Seek ye first the kingdom of God
And His righteousness
And all these things shall be added unto you
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Man shall not live by bread alone
But by every word
That proceeds from the mouth of God
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Ask and it shall be given unto you
Seek and ye shall find
Knock and the door shall be opened unto you
Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Hearing this again reminds me of why I like the first one so much. May
you have many years of music making in front of you. Happy Birthday,

After playing this, I played the original again, and enjoyed both versions.

This is such a wonderful piece Jemimah! Thank you Tom for taking it up
and reminding us of it, and for adding some "Tom-spirit".

A clear favourite!

Nice choice
The writer of this classic song (Karen Lafferty) is actually a friend of
mine and lives a couple of miles from my house. She's a great person
and a fun musician to work with.

I actually didn't know the song before I met her, which is crazy because
it's an absolute classic that has made it into countless albums,
songbooks, churches, etc.

It's fun to hear the different versions of this song over the years. Yours
is very nice and I like the fresh attitude it is approached with.

This has ended up...
...one of my personal favorite MacJams songs, and of course Jem is one
of the favorite MacJams performers in this household. (My son adores
her, right up there with ledebutant.)

I will admit that I prefer the non-fluttering-flute version, but what the
heck, this is more of a chance to revisit the song, the performance, and
the performer, and a chance to wish Jem Merry Christmas, happy
birthday, and all of that good stuff... Which I do, with all my heart.

Jem, you're just one talented and good-hearted person, and it
continues to be a pleasure and an honor to know you!

Many years ago, so was I...
My favorite song from my catholic grade school and high school days...
still reminds me of my innocent days. Jem, your voice is pure and gentle
as a morning breeze. Tom's background music did a lot to highlight the
beauty and purity of your voice.

Happy birthday, Jem, and kudos to a great job from both of you!!

I guess I could be a 'poster child' for MacJams. I joined the site on New Year's Eve 2004, after several years of not making much music at all. A long dry spell. Since then, I have posted more than 50 songs here, collaborated with some wonderful arti... [see more]
