Lyrics
Golden rays of youth
fade away

Sometime skies
cold and gray

Beacon heart
guiding way
Flash of light
Break of day

Long its been
my old friend

Hope things are good
from where you stand

Serve and grow
some depend
Kindly smile
that you send

Golden rays of youth
(Serve and grow)
fade away
(some depend)

Sometime skies
(Kindly smile)
cold and gray
(that you send)

This is headphone candy...
I love the two guitars left and right, playing against each other, and
then the vocals... The leadish bit in the middle and the string bits are
cool...

Reminds somewhat of some early Bowie and some early Eno and Cale...
And some VU or Lou Reed...

And for all that I can make comparisons, it has a structure and feel all
its own. I like it very much...

Ed

Song is cool
but the orchestration is confusing and doesn't add anything. Your guitar and vocal could stand on their own. The lead kind of works on the break but not throughout. The strength in the tune comes from the guitar, your vocal and the lyrics.

You have excellent comments!

The orchestration is meant to be disjointed ... but I might scale it back a bit!

Thanks

Dire straits influence?
Reminds me of Mark Knoppfler, vocally. My voice is not like his, but I
have to say he knows how to make excellent use of his voice with the
right kind of songs.

Simple melody with poetic lyrics that stay away from cliches (which is a
hot topic in the forum right now). Good job!

Musically, I think you are in the right direction. Your voice and styling
is very comfortable with folk/rock or country/rock kind of songs,
melancholic and romantic.

Recording wise, a little rough in the mixing, and needs a little EQ and a
little more effects. But your voice and song comes across as sincere in
its rawness and that's the beauty of it.

Hope to hear lots more from you.

Hey I really liked your song!

My recordings are variable. Sometimes I'm more technically inpired.

I like the way...
...the voices kind of sing against each other. Simple guitar riff that doesn't
get boring at all. Maybe a litte variation to the drums would be a
proposal. Dirty solo - sounds great.

Interesting stuff
I like the overlapping vocals, with each seeming to have it's own agenda.
The guitar parts work well, but I'm not so sure about the strings. I don't
know if I'd dump them entirely, maybe just scale them back to an even
more occasional hit. The lyrics are cool and I love the almost Lou Reedish
sound of the vocals. All-in-all, works well. Enjoyed it.

I'm back! This sure is an odd little ditty Doug! I really enjoyed the sounds on the guitars, especially the backwards-sounding one. Also enjoyed the Lou Reed-ishness of your vocals. There are some odd timing things in there which, on second listen didn't sound too out of place - I liked this, and as Dion said below, it's a great rainy day song - so I'll keep playing it just in case it encourages rain.

I want that strange mic
Whatever that strange mic is it has great fidelity. Especially when you
reach down and get close were you can hear the spittle. Great

I don't know that I would change much because it's not main stream or
pop. It's got a funky drive and with the contrasting vocals, guitars and
orchestra it fits. Quirky, fun. Thanks.

I want that strange mic
Thanks Roy,

You have definitely caught the levity!

Thanks for swinging by.

I bought the mic from Radio Shack about 20 years ago as a reward for
quitting cigarettes. I didn't actually quit for another five years. I need to find
some more bad habits to reform so that I can get some more equipment!

soft shuffle
Well .... the tone of this is fantastic, really lethargic and a lovely, seen-it-all vocal, but it can go a little flat (the vox) in the really low bits. The guitar solo is OK, but a bit to much chorus for my taste.
The sound in general is good (better than i can achieve), it just feels like the song needs a bit more of a push.
It's really good, but it can be great.

Cool!
This is a wonderful Knopfler-ish piece. Your vox is in top form here. I love
the guitars and the overall mix. But the strings don't really work. Without
the strings I would give this a 9.50!

Be well man!

Thanks Michael!

So far it stands, but I'm starting to waver on the strings thing. You taunt me
with scores, that's what happens.

What Ed said...
Dion!

You guys are the BEST!

I have 2 daughters: 8 years and 25 years. When the older one was a little girl,
she called her best friend and cousin Jonah - "Doadar."

I'd never met anyone like MacJams, before. So I wanted to come up with
some funky sounding code (screen) name. These things were all new to me.
I'm still learning about this internet community. I sometimes learn, too late,
about my inappropriateness.

Life story.

Thanks for listening!

Lou Reed
I agree with the first comment by Ejh that it is remiscent of work by
Boweie, JJ Cale, and especially Lou Reed. I heard the simple and clichéd
chord progression at the beginning and was wondering what you were
going to do with it, but you absolutely kept my interest all the way
through. Great words!

good song
But I must say that I didn't like the strings. They sounded really dissonant to me. Since no one else above has mentioned it, maybe it's just me. I would love to hear this song without the strings. And how it pans from left to right... the same refrain over and over... (OK, I'll stop. I really didn't like the strings.)

Your vocals are perfect for this piece. And I like the overlapping voices. I really like the simplicity of the lyrics, the seemingly fragmented thoughts that put together creates something rather profound.

I must add that all the other instruments were well placed.

Just don't know what about those strings that got to me so....

Good job, though. Cheers.

Charlie! What about the strings?

Ah yes, I understand. When I get around to readdressing it, I may pull back
on the strings...but you never know...

Thanks for the visit!

fun to play with in the future.

okay
all of these people who commented, i respect them all. but don't listen to them, those strings are incredible. they sound really twisted. if it was me, i would double them with a guitar doing the same part. but heres the catch: tune all of your guitar strings to the same note, and then play that string part with a slide with a slightly dirty sound: da didda didda didda. really love this. i embrace the off kilter parts.

I looked at my list and saw you've done a little research on my old stuff! This one is one of my favorites, I must say. Thanks for the advice. Your thoughts are unique on the subject. I had a slide way back when, but never masted it. Maybe I'll pick it up again, now that I have more patience.

Changed for the better?
Because this sounds like someone slipping into insanity to me. Everything's disjointed and off-kilter (while it still makes a certain kind of sense) -- and I will be the voice of dissent and say that I really like the strings. They add just another thin layer of madness on top of the song.

Seriously, I'm a little creeped out right now. I think in a good way.

Yes, I really like the oddity of this one. It was all very calculated, I assure you! Or maybe it just fell into place during production. You be the judge!

Hey J!
Thanks for swinging by this old song. I'm glad you liked this as is. I try to listen to advice on some of my tunes, but can't help liking how I put them down originally. Just 'cause that's how I was inspired, I guess.

Thanks,
