Lyrics
Everything is illuminated
It's all so plainly clear into my head
The vagueness and the background noises
They disappeared, were pulled aside
By reason and reflective thinking
I don't know if I like this state of mind

Too many windows with no outlook
The colours on the wall are way too lurid
For my shattered ego
Perhaps it's time to notice
Time is passing by

I've travelled to forgotten places
I've slept onto some holy ground
But never thought the glare of darkness
Would once become the evidence
Of how I look inside

The wrong is very right now
The silence is loud into my ears
The rules have turned their back on me
For many years

The truth is buried blind now
The wickedness cries victory
And now becomes a part of
My destiny

Everything is amalgamated
The present and the past allied so well
The clarity of my awareness
Is undergoing overwhelming
Stages of exceeding splendour
I don't know if I like this state of mind

Too many doors without an exit
Too many years of lost and wasted
Words that made my heart so wealthy
Perhaps I realise now
Nothing's left inside

This is so pure Moorlandt. I love it...and it touches me.Again you did a
great composition, great lyrics and i notice that your singing is this time
also grown up.The surprising part was surprising me so well...the listener
is waiting for the tragic part, and it comes...so emotional, so out of you...i
really love this track...

So glad you're touched by it. It is indeed very intense and the bridge (which I guess you call the 'surprising part'), has cost me a lot of time to vocalise. Thanks so much again for your flowers. - Walter

Tantalising!
Tantalisingly long intro Walter. What a great, emotional voice you
have, and I'm still amazed at the depth of your lyrics. Another one
that makes me feel like I'm in some late-night cabaret - Bowie/Iva
Davies style. Not too many of us here could get away with lyrics like
yours Walter. I really like this song (as usual!).

Cabaret
Hey Neil, thanks for these nice comments. Do you think the intro is too long? I intended to create a kind of relaxed mood before the vocals come in. Haha, yes that cabaret reference... maybe I missed a career. - Walter

Characteristic song
with which I mean that it has a very definite and personal style. This
one doesn't sound like anybody else. Intense and passionately sung,
the vocals are daringly emotional in tone. I was sort of waiting for hell
to break loose towards the end of the song but that didn't happen. I
could imagine a loud part in there working well - like for instance the
part where the guitar solo in Bowie's Time kicks in. But on the
other hand, the holding back of this song is part of what makes it
work. Goed werk, man!

the holding back
This is such a great comment. I did not want to burst out too much in this song, although it builds up a tension that suspects this kind of emotion. The holding back is much more interesting in my opinion (with a little exception in the bridge). You noticed this so well. Thanks Denny, this makes my day. Groetjes - Walter

Incredible!
Walter...this is a fab track, for sure!! I loved everything about this song.
The trills on the piano, your voice (which is just fantastic)....I could go on
and on, but you get the idea. There are parts that sound very longing,
sorrowful. It sounds like much emotion is in this piece. I cant describe it
very well, but there are passages that feel very....40's ish. Like during the
war. Not sure how to really explaing.....jeesh! I am at a loss for words
lately. Sorry. I loved it. Fav'd and DL'd. Excellent work, Walter! Be well!

40-ish
Thanks for so many flowers, Richard. I hope you're doing fine. The 40-ish feeling might perhaps come from the 'far old piano' piece after the first singing part. Or the doubled voice in the bridge? Whatever, I'm very glad you stopped by and took your time to listen and comment. Keep well! - Walter

Lamenting ..
... sorrowful. I got something of a Tom Waits thing (without the husky
voice) .. and smokey bar at closing kindof thing .. fab vocals and lyrics -
like the jump into your 'higher style' at the "The wrong is very right
now .." section - much more electropop style vocal, works well.

Logic drives you from G to B, GB .. er ..doh.

Lost in imagination
The Bowie comparisons are inevitable. Love the sense of wandering, the
piano incidentals and dissonance, the forward vocals and long poetic
lines, the lost spaciousness and drifting longing emotions juxtaposed
with great diction. The key change, when the solo strings come in
earnestly, is wonderful, as is the cool reverbed solo piano solo. Great
mood piece.

Bringing the inside out
Knowing how hard it is to compose pieces of this format, I am making
a bow to you, Moorlandt. Your track conveys a certain feeling I know
very well. It is reflecting a part of my soul I have always felt.

It's not only difficult to come up with the lyrics, making them work,
finding the right moments to set in with vocals, the bridge, etc.

Also regarding harmonies, it is very delicate and very well executed. I
tend to go too much for the "proper" harmonies sometimes. At the
same time I feel I could do more in the direction of jazz or classic, or
using classic instrumentation like you did here for creating a dark soul
scape.

It's a great piece that has earned its high ranked voting.

Passionate
This is VERY good. No need to make comparisons with others %u2013 this stand
well on it's own. Your voice is very characteristic; deep with passion for
your words and the story you wish to tell. I like stories; this is a very
haunting tale of life that anyone of us can read into to. The vocals are
superb, even on their own read aside from the music they are poetry in
my ears. The piano and solo strings is mixed in a way that to me
eliminates some of the sadness or emptiness and feeds some hope - I
find this contrast good. Again, this very, very good! Thanks! /M

just getting the word AMALGAMATED into a song!....this is a
remarkable piece...you have an original voice and concept, and both
are extremely effective.

while this bears no resemblence to blues musically...it is a blues
sentiment, a man struggling to fit into a world he didnt make and has
no control over...very powerful.

Dark Lullaby
This is very raw and intense in all elements of vocal, lyrics, production
and melody. There is an operatic feel to this because of the serious
emotion and sweep of the subject matter.

As I was listening I was thinking of Kurt Weil, the great German
composer from the early to mid 1900's.

Very good effort.

What to say...
I really admire your utter sincerity, which I feel is not only genuine but
also fruitful. Not just a lament, but thoughts of a seeking person with a
brighter future (and I am saying that referring strictly to your beautufl
musical and lyrical offering here). The combination of strings, piano and
voice is very effective. The simplicity adds intensity and is never boring.
That alone is an achievement! I could imagine this to be the first of story
with various parts. The next portaying the morning after, with more hope
and promise. Obviously all this is just me talking, but let me simply say
that I'm always impressed by the unfiltered creative energy in your songs,

Yeah Satie and Kurt Weil
Yeah Satie and Kurt Weil for me too. Your voice is sober and dark and in an unpleasant place , which makes the song all the more intriguing. I think there in a sense of selfrealisation, and confession being expressed here in a very powerful and honest way. I can relate to that very much. This is haunting. You are a poet, a remarkable lyricist, an expressive vocalist, a talented composer, and the more I hear, the more I am honored that you even stopped by to give me a listen! The arrangement itself consists of sparse, but carefully selected notation as opposed to an overly lush and over-orchestrated music bed. This is a powerful study in how the economy of notes can be as powerfully moving, if not more so, than 48 tracks of strings, percussion and brass.

Everything is illuminated
I just finished the book "Everything is illuminated". Brilliant. Moving tune, but your killer vocals speak below the skin. Still, there is too much regret in this world. Live it, man.

Heel goed
Hallo Moorlandt,

Dit is heel goed. Je klinkt een beetje als David Bowie.
Wel helemaal anders dan de muziek die ik maak.
Ik vind het heel goed gezongen en ook gespeeld.

Groetjes uit Herentals,

your lyrics are fantastic. I wish I had the capability to write like you. Fragile and intense...you sum it up perfectly. Let's add beautiful onto that as well.

thanks, Linda
Thanks so much for this 'beautiful' comment, Linda. But believe me, it's always hard working to write down those lyrics for a non-native english speaking guy like me... So glad you like it.

empathetic
i cannot empathise any more to the lyric.. and the mood of this music..
i mean, i suffer from some sort of weird panic attack called 'derealisation'.. but this music establishes much clearer explanation about that state of mind....

it is so satisfying and soothing when the tone of music resonates with the things going on in my mind... it is haunting and beautiful!

thanks for sharing this track..

soothing
Hún, your comment touches me deeply. Really, I never realised my music or lyrics could carry any 'therapeutic' quality. So glad that it supports you in some way...

A brilliant performance.....
The song is very evocative. All sorts of pictures came to mind as I listened to this piece. (Too many pictures for me to listen to another of your pieces tonight). I love the arrangement........

I could hear some additional French-sounding accordian, rushing between some of the verses, especially at the beginning. I think that the accordian can add speed and atmosphere between the slower, singing sections, if any were required. (I'm sorry to go on in this way but this mix has me hearing all sorts of possibilities, musically-speaking).

I am not trying to take anything away from what you have created. As I said at the beginning, I love the arrangement. It is first class in all respects.

Take care.

Paul

Wow
I'm glad I'm finally getting around to checking out your music, Walter. This is a superb piece. The lyrics are poetry that takes me into a dark emotional place, like reading Dostoyevsk. The musical composition, the woodwinds, strings, and piano are like complex characters, beautiful in their expressiveness and tone. Your close deep vocals are wonderful. Excellent phrasing of the lines enhances the words. Great attention to detail and space.

Makes me long for my darker days... in a good way.

We were crying
I was listening to this and thought it exceedingly beautiful, so i pasted the link in my iChat, to my online friend, and we listened to it together and were crying so much.

It is beautiful. It sounds like you're in a big, dark, deserted castle at night. It reminds me of vampires. Vampires that i can empathize with, i mean.
