Description
The all acoustic CD is finished. It is entitled "Blues before Breakfast", and features the two great musicians on this track with me: scott bronnes on harmonica, and lead vocals. Scott wrote the lyrics as well; and fran bishop on the brush drum kit.

You can order the cd form THELOSTRECORDS now, and it will be available for shipping in about a month or so.

thanks to scott and fran for the great contribution to this music

You know, I've been listening...
...to the CD this week while walking to work... Stupid me, I keep starting at the beginning, and so I'm REAL familiar with the first three songs... And then I was catching the rest over the speakers in the office, but with less attention...

So I MADE myself sit on the porch yesterday and listen top to bottom. This is one of the tracks that stood out for me... A very live, natural sound over speakers, but real full and deep on the headphones... I love the vocal, the interplay, the kinda-One-Way-Out-ish groove...

This new acoustic CD is going to be a pleasant eye-opener for your electric blues fans. You've got a really great feel, a nice vibe, all through it...

Much as I love Libby's "railroad shot", the graphic you've attached here is also very cool... Guess you're not short on graphic ideas, either...

thanks ed
this is a different mix than the one on the copy you have...scott hated the first mix...so i went at it again. i think you are right...this is the exact old timey vibe i wanted on this song in particular and the cd as a whole. Fran Bishop's contribution here is ENORMOUS. We did this several times with several different styly brushes, and this is the one that is Fran-approved...he sat over my shoulder while i was eqing and pointed to a slider about 3/4s to the right of the 31 sider GB eq....it WAS the magic slider that brought ALL the nuances he coaxed from his drums right to the front.

Scott brought in the lyrics and i love them. we are a couple of old flower-heads i guess! His vocal delivery is relaxed and natural, and he says that i have captured the best recorded harp sound he has ever had...his tone on this and all his stuff was really just created by him...acoustic into two AKG mics about 4 feet apart...I had him stand in the middle.

Thanks again for the use of my pal Smokey for this recording ed...all these blues were trapped inside that guitar and were just itchin to get out.

all my best to thepeep

In the words...
...of the immortal Skip James: "I'm so glad"! That's how this raw but tight piece makes me feel. It's like getting to sit-in on a back-stage jam between three blues greats. Great message too! Love it!

Be well men!

Wonderful...
This is the first of your numbers I have listened to...It is just so...authentic!!! A very tight recording with everyone one playing well, strong vocals, and absolutely honest and authentic styling. I can't imagine a better recording. If the rest of the album is on par with this, you should sell a pile of 'em. I hope you do. You guys deserve it.

this is good
good recording and nice playing. but I'm not a real fan of straight blues progressions.

Mayby you could change it up somewhere in the tune so it has an interesting turn, kinda Zep like.
They did a lot of blues in the early days but it was kept interesting.

Please don't get me wrong, its just IMHO.

You are a great player and have great skills. Its just me.

ziti said 4423 days ago (May 7th, 2007)
thank you
for the listen. This is a straight a blues progression as you can get...although the vamp sections are not in the traditional vein, it is intended to pay homage to the older blues and blues artists.

In regards to Zep...i was a total zep hater when they were out and popular, not for any musical reasons, but at the time, i felt they did a tremendous dis-service to the blues and blues masters. They sorta borrowed a little too freely without giving proper credit...and as a young man, this really pissed me off.

Now listening back to zep..i really enjoy their rock music, and the compositions and recordings...EXCEPT for the blues material, which is still really annoying to me...I love page as a composer and ensemble player, but to me his guitar solos sound terrible (especially on the live material)...his studio playing seems much more controlled but the live solos on HOW THE WEST WAS WON are really not very well played at all...they have no direction, no forward movement, and you kind of sit around waiting for the song to come back (which should never happen during a guitar solo IMHO)...the BAND playing and ensemble stuff is really great tho...and worthy of the praise he receives.

Again, i so appreciate the listen. And the comments are why I come here!

best regards

z

cool man
I got my intro tho the blues by listening to Page in early ZEP days. I'm a little younger than you and Zep was already disolved when i was in dipers. So that is why I use them as standard. I guess it all is relative to what you are brought up with. I have tried to get into the Blues and well I loose interst.
Your stuff is very cool though. I'm glad I commented and you responded.
I'll give some more of your music a listen to get a better feel for what you do.by the way I prefer Penna LOL i guess we are just different.
BTW
I spent five years in Watertown working in one Becon...some good times and great friends.

huh?
i dont think i understand this...but it really seems like a put down. Hope you can clarify this statement for me.

I thought the old cliche about white guys playing blues had been finally put to sleep...but maybe not.
