Description
This is a song I did a while ago, but a friend had just expressed interest in it, so here you go. This is recorded on an old mac at my friends house, with an 808 drum machine, a toy keyboard, and was a first take special (he had a bulldog that he had let eat some chinese food and the stench was so bad I had to get out of there). The only overdub was the synth and the little guitar noise at the end of the song .his was originally done to fleshh out an Old Hickory record; there weren't enough songs and our guitar player Jason was out of town.

Another in my seemingly endless stream of melancholia/Lennon rip-offs. The way it works is I used to be sad, he used to be a genius.

melancholy is my homeland
i always found the sheer release of the soul and intake of all stimulation that comes with the sadder songs to be the most rewarding expression and experience in music. This song is a fine example of this.

I like the sounds
but mostly I like the singing - very expressive and...okay, melancholy. But, hey, what's wrong with that? Pink Floyd (pretty much my favorite band) have made a career out of melancholy music (at least since Syd left...). I like the length. Does what it does and stops. Very cool. Nice work, as ever. Peace.

thanks dajama
glad you like, we have similar taste much of the time, so it's appreciated. the vocals are on the edge of almost un-useable, but i liked the feel so i left them. there's a couple of spots where i could be a little more in pitch, but real men aren't afraid to choke in public.

melancholy faith
What a great song :)

i like its simplicity and its honesty.
I also love that phrase "I used to be sad, he used to be a genius" in your song notes.

(And sometimes, it is all about faith)

thanks
for listening, maybe i'll use that line in a song (if i ever remember it). yeah, regarding faith, this song was pretty much a reminder to myself to try and indulge in a little of it from time to time.

ping
I like the 808 "ping" sounds (not as much as the 909,though). Another nice album closer, not a second too long.

wow
strong words. i just read what you wrote and started laughing out loud. i've often read your posts to others and had the same reaction; now i've finally got my own Dharma Logos "totally blunt" comment. glad you like it even though it sucks. thanks for coming by.

At least I like it.
If I really don't like a song I don't take the time to comment. I do have SOME tact, lol. If I comment that means I actually liked the song enough to listen to it and write something about it.

you're one of a few who..
can do a song thats so basic and simple but pull it off with a lot of depth. of course the small synth bits always add a little spice.

thanks
vic, very kind of you to say. i used to do this one live with the toy keyboard and the drum machine built into it, and you're right, the synth helps.

jeeze
Dude, you got whole boat load of gems here. I like the emotion in the performance. If I had a chorus like that I 'd play it five times per song. But once(or was it twice) was enough to get it bouncing around my cranium.

Hey
If you're gonna rip off someone, may as well be Lennon. ;)
I can hear the Walrus in the keys, but this is a fine song. I'll need to check out more of your back catalog.
You're also one of the few people here I have listened to recently that make me want to take my microphone out of the box and take a shot at singing. Your voice is infectious - in a good way!

michael2 said 4390 days ago (June 9th, 2007)
thank you
for listening and commenting, and i'm stoked you like. i think you do great stuff, but your miles ahead of me in recording skills and patience. as for the vocals, thanks. i've always sang in bands, but it was more a case of: "i'll do it, how hard can it be?" rather than having an awesome set of "pipes." thanks for stopping by.

I'm beginning to think that you're
living in my head and play what I want to hear when I click on your page. Either that or I'm living in your head when you sit down to record and eventually I get to hear what i was thinking. Very beautiful tune here. Ya can't beat an 808.
