Lyrics
Stop, stop
Tellin' me you don't love me-
Stop, stop
Sayin' that you don't care-
If you left in the first place,
We wouldn't be in this mess.
Why you stopped stopped lovin' me,
I'll never know.

From all I did and all that I tried,
All I heard was lies, lies, lies,
Why do I bother, God knows why I try,
When all I get are lies, lies, lies, lies, lies.

Heaven/hell knows at the start of the years,
The way it will happen, will it all end in tears,
If we knew then, what we know now ..
Would it be different?

It's fun while it lasts and pain when it ends,
Become friends, which to call.
At the back of your mind, all you know is ..
it's better to have had love than have never loved at all.

Ask yourself a question ask yourself this
Turn it over in your mind for a while,
Turn and look at me - in the eye
Why did you stop, stop, stop, stop, stop ...

this is feel good music, and i feel much better for listening to it...well done job by everyone involved...killer tune!!!

Thanks r.a.d.
.. I dunno why I'm always confusing people with the lid ..
this is just me doing everything .. but I did rehearse this
song with an old band years ago - it was one of the drummers
favourites .. and I think he wrote most of the lyrics .. I
better credit him.

I play guitar, sing and played all the other bits with midi ..
and DoD of course for the drums .. and there is one banjo
loop and some explosions .. couldn't resist :o)

.. didn't even know that was possible. Do it again .. just
to show it wasn't fluke .. ;o)

Thanks Steve - I did everything you hear - I play guitar
and sung the er .. singing :o) and other things via midi keyboard. Loops are drums (DoD), banjo and the explosions.

Neil's kindly offered his bass playing services for this one- don't sulk or pout now ;o)

Bloody good track Alan
Love the intro - banjo is just perfect!!!!! Excellent guitar tone - Les Paul Custom obviously perfect for the role. "Hard rock"? Maybe "metal pop", but a great song nonetheless. Nice, clean production. I know it probably wouldn't suit the "hard rock" vibe, but in "metal pop" I think the vox could have slightly more gain. DoD sounds amazing - what a great set of loops - but bass is hard to locate on my 'phones (will have another listen on monitors).
Bloody good track Alan - would have been a great live track I'm sure.

Thanks Neil ..
my trusty Les Paul Studio setting in GB hasn't let me
down yet :o) - glad you liked the rather whimsical banjo
part, gave me a giggle anyway. I mixed this nearly all
with headphones again (late at night), so it could do
with a bit more bass I think (though the GB midi bass in
this doesn't do much more than follow the guitar really).

Is there such a selection "metal-pop" when you upload?
That would have been ideal - my vocals always pull things
in a poppier direction and I can agree, they should probably
come up a little (I was scared you'ld hear the neighbours drum practice - which was ongoing all through my vocal recording session). So I'd really have to re-do the vocals
to be honest. This one might work better with someone with
a grittier voice .. hmm .. dunno.

I just made ..
.. "metal-pop" up, but it has a nice ring to it - could be the NEXT BIG THING!

*doh*
.. I was beginning to wonder if you had a different list to
me in Australia .. hahahah. Do you think "soft rock" might
be better? Asch - I'll stick metal and pop in the keywords
for now :o)

I meant to say, DoD is cool .. I'm very happy with it but
I'm from far the master of DoD drum loop chopping .. one thing though .. outof all their cymbal single hits on Vol 1 & 3 ..I still have to use GBs "cartoon splash??" to get a cymbal that is hit and then held by hand quickly afterwards .. I've tried cutting a cymbal loop short but it doesn't sound right. So it was cartoon one again in this :o) hmm ..
r.a.d. might know of one (he has the same Vol's as me if
I recall).

The vocals I've since listened to on car speakers and I'm
quite happy with the level there to be honest .. might
have to do with the stereo placement choice why its competing a bit on phones. I've also noticed a "boink"
coming in on the second dead stop (which I have no idea
what is doing that) hahahah. (?) I must confess I was
almost going to sing "turnip over in your mind" instead
to give Rebsie a laugh ... real bass? Sure, I'd be honoured, as long as you mix it in :o), be my guest [Steve is pretty busy with his own tunes and I'm sure won't mind either](my track record isn't good with bass mixing).. shall I send you the GB file via pando? There is no rush .. since I just posted this version of course.

..I too can hear the vocals sound a bit drowned by guitar
in my studio headphones .. but when I listened in my car
and with little eeny weeny personal stereo headphones ..
I dared not bring them up any more. It's a good point ...
and your not the first to mention that point ..
my guess is the stereo field placement of the vocals
is a bit close to the guitars placement .. or something
like that .. *whistles like he knows* lol. I can try and
fix it for the re-post with real bass coming some indefinite
time in the future.

Steve UK!
yay .. haven't heard from you in a good while ..glad
you enjoyed this, appreciate you leaving your mark.

I think I'm a bit influenced by the sound of some other
'metal/pop' tracks of recent times like The Wildhearts
"I wanna go where the people go" single version and
Honeycrack's "Animals" off the Prozaic album. Ring any
bells? Although I need to get micing up a Marshall really
to pursue this blend more, I feel.

Thanks Cap'n Jack ..
.. or should I say Grandpa Curmudgeon? It must be the first
time I've ever been tempted to say "there's alot of
Goodwilly's about these days" :o)

Glad you liked my vocal efforts: the harmonies being a this
version addition (and nothing like what Anya used to sing)- first time actually I've tried really trying some better 'setting up' with the AU Multiband Compressor locally on
each of my vocals tracks too. I don't think I've got it
quite right yet myself .. but I'm certainly getting there.

You may have read, your Aussie stowaway has kindly offered
to provide some real bass for this, which was very kind of him. Looking forward to hearing his take on this.

Where is the guitar solo?
OK, I am biased, a hard rock song has to have a guitar solo!!
Nice song and sound, I agree a more aggressive voice would fit the bill better but who am I to complain!!
I'd love a solo though...

apb said 3981 days ago (June 26th, 2007)
I agree ..
.. a hard rock song should. However, this is really a metal/pop song posted under a 'closest genre' category. In
this sub-genre I would say you eiher have no solo, or a token
twiddle (usually repeated catchy riff rather than shred).

The vocals I agree totally with you - should have a touch more grit and aggression .. and I must get a tattoo as well ..
but what? ;o)

alan
nice. I'm just wondering where the banjo went off to after the intro. will have to listen again to see if it makes a return.

About the vocals, my first impression was not that they weren't loud enough, but that they sounded like they were in the wrong "place," which made them sound muted, so I think you're on to something thinking they may be sharing space with the guitars or something.

great to hear from you. I'm still twiddling my thumbs waiting for my computer : (

are you sitting comfortably .. you heard that first explosion?
..well, sorry .. the banjo doesn't return after that .. lol.
(actually I like a bit of banjo, I'm just kidding as usual)

My vocal level I'll sort one way or another- might have a
relook a stereo field placement and the AU Multiband Comp.
settings. Hope your computer gets fixed soon bud and
appreciate you pushing C. off his (I presume) to get online.

Clarity and control
Wonderful clarity, control, and southern rock energy. I dug the whole track, the balanced writing. The vocals seem almost too upfront with the style, in my ears; I kind of like this kind of rock to make the singer strain a bit to out-sing the band, if that makes sense, so that I'd mix the vocals lower in the mix and sing with slightly more energy and maybe a tad further from the mic. The boom-chick aspect of the drum loop was kind of too loopy during the bridge (softer) section, when everything dropped out I imagined more personality from the drummer, and a different groove (use of trap, maybe). But I dug the track as I do all your stuff.

apb said 3981 days ago (June 26th, 2007)
Thank Tobin
.. appreciate it. Two very good points you make .. and
I agree with you ... when we rehearsed this in confined space ..I had to really belt .. now I had the luxury of being lazy and sitting about a foot from the Rode NT-1A ..
I wasn't really content with the vocals - the neighbors
drum practice was bugging me all through recording ..
and I really should inject some life into the drums at
the bridge too .. since jiguma is providing some real
bass, I will take the opportunity to redo the lead (at
least) vocals and add some variety to the bridge drums.

Guess I have to move my mic & stand etc .. no rest eh? lol.

Thanks again - very useful comments.

too kind. I think my vocals are a bit 'too warm' in fact ..
fiddling with that AU Multi Comp thang ..I think Tobin is
on to something (as well as me sorting the placement a bit
better). But I do like the overall warm sound I stumbled
onto and glad you liked the bridge - I wanted to drop the
guitar out and focus some attention on using/blending some
other nice sounds I liked for that bit- there is a weird
'wishp' effect in that section from one of the auto-panned tracks colliding with a duplicate that is panned somewhere else .. not sure if I like it or not .. but it was an accident.

.. I hadn't heard of mxpx, so I had a quick listen on iTunes
to "Without you" (there most popular song there). I thought
they sounded quite Green Day-esque but more poppy. I guess
you mean the verse parts that are without harmony??

It was great fun at least to play in rehearsal, with lots
of jumping, windmill guitaring and even finger pointing at
the carpeted walls, could work up a fair sweat :)

mhmm
they do have a greenday poppy feel but in places the vocals reminded me of some tracks of there's i've heard. i think i was mostly hearing an accoustic song they did that was a bit different for them. i can also hear a bit of social distortion with the rough vocals now that im taking another listen.

Banjo?????
And then it was gone, like a quick slap in the face that gets your attention. "Huh? What'd I do? What's goin' on?"

And then it's a great, dash-board-pounding tune that rides in top gear along the highway, windows down and music thumping. What a ride! I've never hears of a banjo used as a booster rocket, but hey - if it works, then hit the button and go. Love this!

By the way, your "Long Way Home" inspired me to try a "fake live" approach on my most recent tune. Dunno whether you'll be pleased or ashamed you influenced it (hint: it involves a giant chocolate rabbit)but that's what I love about MacJams... inspiration and ideas bouncing around like lightning.

More banjo
please! That was cool. This is a nice song. The riffs rock, the playing is nicely done, and the melody is memorable and catchy. The vocal does seem a little forward in the mix, and a little "separated" from the music (I wish I could explain myself better!) but this is a minor quibble. Very nice work. Always enjoyable stuff. So many great things about this - the banjo in the intro, the gritty little vocal effect (gotta steal that one), the fantastic production, the general heaviness of the guitars (like Vision Thing) ... great song, sorry I'm so late hearing it!

I won't stop ...
:o) Thanks Steve. Those muted notes on my guitar always sound like "One vision"/"Now I'm here" -esque, just the way I like
the overall tone I use nearly all the time :o) ..there's
a tiny bit of clipping in that opening I need to sort ..

What gritty vocal FX? That's just my voice!! hahahha...oh,
I see what you mean ...

You collab with Linda (onesweetworld) Crashed was just sublime...man, your on a roll!!

Nice
Love the lyrics and the way you have arranged this song. Lots of variation makes for enjoyable listen. I thought the "Stop stop" line was especially effective. Funny how sometimes simple is best? Great guitar playing, singing and production as usual.

Thanks Tom
.. simple is indeed best, especially if you have to play guitar and sing at the same time (as was the case with this
guitar part) ... hence the old 'flicks in the gaps' trick.

Most of my uploads are written with this factor in mind,
with the exception of a few.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I Think You...
Crashed the Stop sign, Bud.

Really nice smokin' Southern rock feel to this piece.

Glad to see your getting some stuff done, brother. ;)
