Phony Tony

Mystified, bibanova (with some help from The Leonids)

Ahhh...the mysterious path that creativity takes, sometimes.

I once wrote a song, a special song for a special someone in my life. Only thing is, I never got around to recording it...until I started to collaborate with Mystified that is.

As many of you may know, Mysti and I get into some weird, eclectic and experimental stuff sometimes. Other times we can be pop angels. This is a mixture of both. The song Phony Tony began to resurrect itself a few months ago...the song that I wrote for that special someone.

I recorded the rough melody as a guide vocal and sent it to Mysti. But not before I reversed the recording. My instructions to her were...DO NOT play this file correctly. I want you to learn how to sing it backwards and then I am going to reverse your backwards singing so it sounds like you singing the lyrics as they should be heard. It was an experiment. It was successful!!!! I was amazed that she could do this.

That was phase 1 and 2.

Phase 3 happened during early March when Mysti came to visit me and we recorded a bunch of material during our infamous 'Phoenix Sessions'. We added to the backwards-forwards vocals that we already had. However, I was having problems with the arrangement of the song over all.

Luckily help was on hand from Winston Smith of The Leonids. I was taken by the work he and Lucy had done with some 50's and 60's classics and their new song 'Remember When'. I asked for help and Winston enrolled Lucy in the project too and we came up with the goods.

So...here it is, 'Phony Tony'...a song that was born in 2002 and was only ever sung into someone's ear before this. The final stages of its journey into existence took place over the last few months...

Please enjoy....and feel free to sing along

Mystified - backwards-forwards vocals and vocals that are forwards only
Bryn - Vocals, drum programming, digital scissors and glue
Winston Smith - backing vocals and synth lines
Lucy Campbell - Bass line, vocals

Recorded and mixed in Logic Pro on an Apple Mac and mastered on a PC using Sony Soundforge 8

what an unusual set of effects this is wrapped in... like 50s pop cereal covered in granulator-sugar :-) addictive melody/harmonies/echoes, wonderfully sung forward and backward. I just hope phony tony eventually "got" this.

Fun song, cute actually, and very enjoyable, not what I'm used to hearing from your crew Bryn, and that alone made the listen worth while...

Great quality vocals here. Loved the harmonies and backing vocals as well. Bass line is pretty sweet. Interesting effects on the female vocals as well. Great job. Thanks for sharing!

Okay- first of all, even without the song sung backwards and flipped over it has such a good vibe... really, really nice. But I have to give you the award for the most innovation I've seen demonstrated here... unreal!!

I commend you all- especially Bryn for even thinking of this and Mystified for being able to pull it off... AMAZING!!

It ended abruptly
as if someone hit the record player. I heard a lot of static...perhaps that was intentional. So, backwards singing is last words sung first? Great tunage, very light spirited and vocals are neat. Thanks.
