Gettysburg Angels (working title)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I wrote this melody after reading the book The Killer Angels, in honor of the men who fought in the American Civil War. They edured so many terrible things with such great courage. I wanted my melody to reflect their bravery and their pain.

Dragonas played guitar, banjo, bass, sang back up vocals, and did all the techie stuff. Thank You Dragonas!

And thank you to Baby Sister for the artwork!

Thank you so much! You know, just writing a melody is such a big deal for me. I don't think I have the courage yet to write with words.

Abstract vocals
Good to see that you don't need words to express a point quite eloquently. Nice melody, well served by the simple arrangement.

Abstract Vocals
I love singing music that treats the voice like an instrument. Of course I love traditional songs with words, but it is kind of a treat get away from lyrics and just make music. So maybe that is why my first song went in that direction. Anyway thank you for saying that I didn't need words.

a bit of the timeless...
Very nice melody, simple, strong, and a bit of march-like quality to it. I like the sparse simplicity of it, and JD chose great instruments to back you up with, and played/sang perfectly for this.

So, what is playing in my mind now? I hear this melody continuing, but picking up more instruments along the way, and as it begins to reach a crescendo with snare drum and orchestra, it shifts key with a cymbal crash, then suddenly dies away to just you and he singing, fading off into the distance. That's where I hear this going :-) And I think this song is well worth building on, as is the sentiment/subject.

Very nice!

Drakonis

March-like
You know when I first wrote the melody I was going for a military march quality. But I totally thought it got lost with the soprano vocals. (You know we usually leave the military themes to the baritones. But of course I am going to write for my own voice.) I am so glad that you could still hear that idea. Your huge orchestral ideas sound exciting. And I am so flattered that you think my melody could go there. But I am not sure that I can do that yet.

Tina's voice...
is a gift.
This is her original melody and luckily she was nice enough to let add a little bit of bass, guitar, and banjo to it.
The most amazing thing to me was how quick the arrangement came together.
This piece was done in an afternoon.
Imagine the possibilities of a Big production!
Like Drakonis said, it could definitely be orchestrated...

hehehe...
"Like Drakonis said, it could definitely be orchestrated..."

And guess who I'm thinking is the best guy to take this on?

Yup... you! :-) You did so well with "The Truth", and your recent symphonic eastward marches, I bet you could make this into another powerhouse, like those are.

LOL
You guys are cracking me up, and totally making my day. Dragonas you can turn my melody into a symphonic master piece as long as you let me sing it for the professional debut. Drakonis can we use your suggestions for the form? Seriously though I think we are going to need a few more melodic ideas I mean the tune only has five measures, two of which are repeats.

please feel free...
I'd be honored to have you take my ideas and run with them! Yes, a B-section would be good... I mean, Ravel already did the Bolero :-)

ditto everything drak said. Big orchestra build - it's calling for it! GORGEOUS vocals, wonderful backing with instrumentation and vocals by dragonas. GREAT work you two - can't wait to hear the second installment.

Angels
You two work very well together and your voices compliment each other perfectly. This is a beautiful melody and I think Dragonas' treatment and choice of instrumentation is perfect. It COULD be taken into much more epic places, but I don't think it needs to be. A soft memorial, like the sweetly whispering breeze blowing over the fields. Very very nice. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Complimenting Voices
I was so excited to discover how well our voices matched. We actually recorded it performance style, the two voices and the guitar all at once and in one take. So we were able to breathe together and really match our vocal colors. Thank you for your lovely comment. It is great to hear that people imagine more possiblities with this, but it makes me very happy to know that you think it is enough as it is.

Pretty much perfect
While I suppose this would be terrific as a bigger, more symphonic production I personally wouldn't change a thing. As it stands this is a very expressive song with the vocal and instrumentation providing a very (18)60's feel. It's beautiful, simple and poignant.

No, Tina... I wouldn't change a thing.
