Soaring Through the Mist

This piece was written for a video about the model glider plane hobby and the flying that goes on in San Diego at a place called Torry Pines. This particular piece was inspired by the soundtrack of the movie "Shattered" which came out in early 2008. I am new to macjams and very interested in comments, critic and suggestions as my goal is to improve and move towards a path of marketability, which is one thing I feel my music may lack.

very soundtrack-ish indeed
I can see the slow glide on the intro, and a fairly good transition to the more adrenaline-pumping guitar funkiness, really nice. The mix seems beautifully clean, but I guess with your mixing background, I should expect that. I like the soft slide-guitar-sound near the end there, very David Gilmour. I can't really find much to nit-pick on, except possibly that (at least in headphones) the low end seemed slightly weak... perhaps boost the bass slightly, or add a richer-sounding bass synth here and there to give more of a "floor" to this? Very listenable, and seems perfect for soundtrack stuff. Welcome to Macjams!

I'm soaring....
Very nice. It definitely takes the listener and makes us glide with the music.

In general a great track, the guitar work towards the end especially appreciated; my only nit to pick is the transition at 1:29. It doesn't feel very smooth. For instance, your bass drum goes from a very syncopated rhythm to, eh, nothing at all. Maybe letting that rhythm resolve into something on beat 1 would make it feel more like the drummer made a transition, rather than that you switching from loop 1 to loop 2.

Nice sounds Sigmund
Overall, a very cool piece of work. Some nice sounds.

I'm a little distracted by the residual graininess in the percussion loop used at the start and quite often later on. While it may be meant to be like that, it sounds like clipping, and takes away from the smoothness of everything else. Maybe you meant to have it sound like that, but for me it just served to say "oh .. he's used that loop again".

Lovely guitar parts, and overall, most enjoyable.

Welcome to MJ!

Top notch..

.. that's a great guitar groove .. really good section for a fast montage sequence .. the soaring feeling is well done too.

One tip: I can hear you are using 'AU Matrix Reverb' on the drums .. and it is cracking .. it seems to do this when you have a number of tracks. To solve this is easy, just 'lock' the drum track .. thus relieving the CPU of doing it in real time (makes a sub-mix down of that 'locked' track) and that after crackle/hiss should go away.

PS. My late father built model (scale) RC planes mostly .. but did a couple of gliders too. It was his big passion. I can picture this music being very appropriate (having personally been out on the field watching the club 'Barnstormers' fly).

Welcome to MJs!

Welcome to MJ! This really is a great soundtrack ride - I'm really impressed with your mixing here. Others have given you specific feedback which is all way above my head - this sounds terrific to me and I'm very much looking forward to hearing what else you've got!

To Jiguma and apb
I appreciate your thoughts and input on the drum loop issues. This is a GB loop and unfortunately this is how the loop sounds - I think Apple's intention waqs to give it a grainy, almost clipping sound, which would probably work better in a techno type of tune. But I really liked the quirkiness of the beat. However you guys do raise points worth considering as I work so THANKS again!

Took me a while ..
.. to find your reply :o) If you reply directly to a comment with the "reply" button on the comment, the commenter can see they got a reply on their own page and follow-up at bit quicker.

Which loop did you use for the drums? Was it a midi loop? I wonder if those loops can come with 'AU Matrix reverb' FX on it. Odd to feature hissy crackle on an audio loop recording.. I hear it first at 0:05/6/7 .. trailing after the drum hits (hence associating it with the drums).

.. it could be some clipping as Neil suggested (but I'd expect that on/at the peaks of the hits myself though .. not trailing away like it does for a couple of secs).

Pity if it's on the source audio loop as you say- it was a small nit in an excellent first post.

I love the opening.
You evolve from that weightless feeling to a 'power' feeling well. This sounds very reminiscent of the backing music of 'Wings' which my husband watched and taped for years. Great first post. I have no specific suggestions for you, only to say it feels right for your purposes.

This is incredible. I hear the crackle too, but aside from that this is awesome. Love the opening, bringing me into the mood gently and then that funky guitar really hits home. Great use of percussion and beats to emphasize but not overpower the piece. A nice sense of movement. Excellent choice of instruments. I LOVE that you used a classic piano sound amidst all the synth stuff. Great production on this too. I'm impressed you did this with Garageband. Cool stuff. Can't wait to hear more.

You have made my night, Kassia
I joined MJ because I wanted some critical feedback on my stuff so I could make it (and future works) better. But heck, let's face it - a review like yours is what we all are secretly hoping for with every work we present. Your high praise is very much appreciated.

By the way I listened to your latest piece "Winter Whimsy" and I must say you are quite talented yourself. I happen to love piano pieces and my greatest hope is to be good enough to write beautiful pieces like this one - something so good that it doesn't need all the production to sound great - just like you have accomplished with this wonderful piece. Very nice.

And thanks again for your kind words!

if you do something poorly, i will try... this was well done to say the least!
i loved the transitions. i could envision the gliders circling overhead. everything was well placed, and nothing fought for frequency. great post.
i look forward to more.

You know
what you are doing. In the end, you must please yourself as much as is possible. It is easy to envision the sky filled with tiny planes or even hawks and eagles. Very evocative of flight. Thanks.

Hey there
Thanks for the listen. You know these planes are not all that tiny. when I think of model planes I think about the little model plane kits I built as a young tyke, but these rc gliders have wing splans as big as 8 to 10 feet! The guys that fly these planes spend thousands of dollars on their hobby - amazing!

Char I really appreciate you stopping by and listening to my music - thank you!

Funny you think that marketability is the one thing your music lacks. I would think it has that in spades. Clean and current sounds, great production, just a clean and professional production.
Great job,
