When You Came Along

Get Flash to see this player.

The riff and chorus of this song have been in my head for months. Every time I picked up my acoustic guitar I'd end up playing it. So with that in mind I sat down and tried to see where it would lead me. It all came together in an afternoon - with a little more work the next morning. EQ and mastering still need work - if this was Garageband recording I'd be finished but LE gives me way too many buttons to press and sliders to slide!
It was initially meant to be a punky kinda song (melodic US punk) but now hearing it I feel it has a kinda alt.country feel too.
Thanks for listening.

When You Came Along
I sucks when you get something in your head and have to get it out to move on. In this case I am glad you got it out. Good track. Nice pop rock riff. Like this alot.
Be well, Russ

Nice Stuff
What a great and catchy guitar melody. Drums fit well. Cool sounding voice and good harmonies in the chorus. Very memorable and singable. "Everything went wrong when you came along" awseome line."

good song
It's got the killer chorus which is delivered in a punchy, effective way.
Like the bridge, good song structure overall.
I hear the echoes of Sugar "If I can't change your mind" in the verse, but melody twisted around enough that it's not a ripoff!
good one!

Catchy stuff

.. well sung (fine harmonies) and fine hook and other lyrics. Reminiscent of several sources .. that .. you just can't place :) ..so that's a good thing.

The el.guitar EQing/tone does jar a little with me .. that sound is kinda punky .. but the playing is more slick, jangly pop, melodic and not thumped out.

The skiffly beat made me think of pushing this a little more "Violent Femmes" -esque direction .. and more lo-fi... perhaps... even maybe an upright bass sound might suit.

It's a great tune demo never-the-less and I don't mean to sound whiny .. :o)

Thanks for sharing.

when you came along
i love the chorus dude - strumming, drums, perfect. bridge is perfect too - I like the melody (reminds me of belle and sebastian) and the "wish you well in the future" line - also the plinky lead (is that a word?). verse does remind of violent femmes - in a good way - I like the vocals and the organ - add a bit more organ and this could easily go the way of the housemartins.

this is really cool, and I dig the retro vibe. only critique is that SOMETHING seems out of time in the verse. I played it a hundred times and can't figure out what. Maybe the rhythm guitar? Or maybe it's just the mix of the rhythm guitar, maybe its up too loud. I don't know. But the only place I hear it is the verse...

You're right...
... there is something weird going on in there. I think it might be the two rythm guitars' harmonics or something. I'll take a look at it and see if I can improve it. It's not noticeable on headphones but played out on my stereo I can just hear it.

I just re-read your comments. There's no organ! I think this is the weird sound you're hearing. There are two electric rythm guitars and I think the harmonics are clashing to produce an odd sound. The reason I didn't notice during mixing is cos they are on the left and right channels and I mix using headphones. I've since re-recorded one of the guitars and it seems to have cured the issue.

i love the vocal verse melody and that chorus and bridge is great. only crit is the same as tempie's. the guitar's a little off time in some spots. did you play it to a click or the drum track? worth fixing imo. Great songwriting, man.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
