Lyrics
As It Seems

[intro]

[verse]
how can you see intuition?
how can you free inhibition?

[transitional]

[verse]
why would you go to the ocean?
why would you know the devotion?

[transitional]

[chorus]
you never notice that i'm never happy
i'm only wishing to see what it means
i'm only seeking and asking a question
why is reality not as it seems?

[verse]
planes in the sky flying upwards
how can you see intuition?
leaves on the trees turning colors
how can you free inhibition?

why would you know the devotion?
cars on the road driving somewhere
why would you go to the ocean?
folks in their lives going nowhere

[chorus]
you never notice that i'm never happy
i'm only wishing to see what it means
i'm only seeking and asking a question
why is reality not as it seems?

[verse]
cats on the streets hunting rodents
trains in the night sounding distant
we're living lives in the moments
lives crashing down in an instant

[verse breakdown]
thoughts in your head dancing freely
dreams leaning hard on your talents
friends in your life never really
love in your heart's in the balance

[final chorus]
you never notice that i'm never happy
i'm only wishing to see what it means
i'm only seeking and asking a question
why is reality not as it seems?

That jangly banjo
was so unexpected that I started giggling. The kermit on steroids made me giggle even more. You regular voice sounds great. Oh boy, Smokey, you are in a class by yourself/yourselves. Wildly entertaining. Thanks.

First I thought, it must be an unknown song from Syd Barrett - then, from TheBeatles man. Absolutely enjoyed this.

I dunno
Sorry, I can't answer the questions you ask in your song... they, and billions more, plague me every day. Sometimes I wish I were the cat, with a single crystal clear thought, nothing more... just to eat the rodent. But then, I wouldn't be here learning so many things that cloud my thoughts, by providing more questions for each answer I find. Questions are carrots that lead us down the path toward... well see, you got me babbling on about all sorts of silliness! Thought-provoking lyrics in their vague way, and intoxicatingly metrical music, as always. Cool!

Psychedelic beauty man
love this one Bill - wildly inventive and wonderfully trippy complex. Very Zappa in the chorus. Really exceptional. I'm so jealous.

Many Many questions raised here. Cool beat keeps me listening to every one. The vocal harmonies are a very nice touch.

as long as you keep asking the questions I'll keep listening. You are the Enterprise of Mj, going where no one has gone before :-) you're just oozing creativity here, Bill. I agree the chorus is Zapp-ish, and it just serves to ties the whole thing together in a big way

another trip
from the smokey vw
This song brought up an interesting thought for me. I think the oldest known "western" use of the melody on the chorus did come from a Harrison song, which I think is part of why it sounds "beatlesque". Your version is probably somewhat different, but anyway I've been hearing it used more and more lately. Just a few years ago STP used something like it on Pretty Penny and even just this year it showed up on a Metallica song from Death Magnetic. I bring that up just because I find it interesting how something like this creeps into culture and tends to keep the same form. Another interesting example is the phrase used by Dave Mathews on "the last stop". I really like that song but I find it funny almost... the melody used behind the words "go ahead and dream, go ahead and dream you are the chosen one". Those notes...must be over 10 notes in sequence. And they must be almost verbatim from their cultural source. I find this strange and interesting. Well I'm sure you didn't think much about this but I thought you might find the thoughts interesting. We all draw on our cultural concept of melody for sure. And I think if we step outside the box of what is normal for us, we may tend to emulate more than usual. I just wonder why is all. Some psychological thing I'm sure. Lastly, thanks for the song!

Wow
I love the way the loop usage has created some diversity here that is just plain unexpected but pleasing to the ears. African drums with banjo .. wow.. loved the vocals treatments/octaving, very effective. That boingy thing does start to get a little tiring admittedly... I'd use it a bit more sparingly.
Certainly a mind-opener/expander as I'd expect. Excellent work.
