Be Thou My Vision

Get Flash to see this player.

This is a jazz piano trio version of the old Irish hymn.

Hmm -- this is a jazzed-up hymn. Does God like His music all jazzed-up? I think if it's done well, then yes. To quote the great theologian Duke Ellington: "There are only two kinds of music: good and bad." I think whatever the genre, if it's good music, God likes it.

Philippians 4:8

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

I could listen to this every Sunday I'd never miss a one. Your playing is as tasteful and playful as ever. Kudo's to on the backing tracks as well.

love it
I just love this type of music. If I could choose one more instrument to play it would be a stand up bass and for this type of music. I'll make it happen someday.

Excellent performance.

Some believe Clapton is God
and I think he'd like it. Others think they are God, and their opinion I avoid. In my humble opinion as a mere mortal I think this is fantastic and you should be very happy with it.

great jazz
this is so great. I will echo ktb - very tastefully done - tasty too!
you've obviously got some great chops happening. Like the big block chords at the end.
The Ivory piano sounds are so kickass.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist
so this does shake me up a bit. If I'm trying to 'sing' through the words in my mind, this doesn't work for me. If, on the other hand, I'm listening to this as a new offering of music, it really works well. From that perspective, I like the tempo, the jazz trio setting, and your stylings on the keyboard, which are, as mentioned several times here, very tastefully done. It's nice to hear a new tune from you here!

Whoa Nelly! Not at all what I expected!

NEVERTHELESS...brilliant and uplifting. Don't believe I've ever heard this approach (or anything quite like it) in relation to this old hymn. Very courageous of you to attempt it.

Be well friend!

A lovely conception...
...and a lovely execution.... I really like the ease and fluidity of your playing, John... As with Paul Page's stuff, that Ivory piano has a wonderful, wonderful sound... Great swing and a light touch... I really like this...

It may be my headphone amp, but I'm catching just a whisper of distortion on some of the peaks... Not terribly distracting compared to how good the music is, but if this is headed toward your next CD....

Glad you pointed this one out to us...

I'd never have guessed....
...that this was a take on Be Thou My Vision...
Your timing, the special licks you throw in at just the right moment, John, are all so amazingly superb. Your fingers just fly in all the right directions and with such an excellent sense of dynamics and just where a chord works best or quick zip through the upper reaches of the treble register. I absolutely love listening to your playing. A master of the genre to be sure... And the German Steinway sings with such clarity. Great choice. (Glad you got it up and running again!)... Wonderful track, John.
