Description
If you watch terrestial TV in Sweden you'ld be amazed at the ads: if it's not sites for gambling, it's bottled water commercials .. this got me thinking of the whole gambling with our environment and the 'water on mars?' topic .. and .. ok, ok .. it was just an excuse to sing "M'ars" really .. lol. Enjoy.

A very short 2 minute idea I was mucking around with that suddenly sounded like what might happen if INXS, The Bangles, Megadeth, Traffic, Phil Collins, Bachman Turner Overdrive and Mack Rice converged as a combo .. hmm .. yup, doncha just hate it when that happens??

Pop alternative with a hint of RnB.

I was very fortunate to have I.G.M. volunteer (so quickly after hearing this), to help finish it off. As such, I thought it only fitting he upload the resulting 'extended to song length' version on his account. Please stop by his page and check it (and his other songs) out -> Selling me water (w/I.G.M). So major thanks to Ingo, fabulous additions, I couldn't have wished for better.

Lyrics
Odds on favorite,
To create addictions.
Pay your fee for alternatives,
That never come.
Selling me water.

I'll take my chances
Tapping into ever decreasing squares/Tapping into ever increasing rectangles,
Repeats.
Sell me air,
I wanna breathe.

Reaping what you knit
in the fabric of time and sss- fashion!
Sell me water?
On Mars?

Seeing red,
To win, you just don't play
The stakes are high,
My get up and go, got up and left
My thirst is free,
They're selling me water.
Selling me water.

oh how brilliant is this?
i'm hoping i'm first, but i won't bet on it because i have to listen to this sweet thing again before writing this comment...there is so much good (awesome!) stuff about this i don't know where to start. that killer bass, the horns popping in and out, great beats. but man, alan, your vocals on this - each little effect you add and the ones you do with your voice, the way you speak it and sing it - i love every stuttering syllable and then the high HIGH stakes. wow alan. awesome.

Cheers Shay
.. too kind. Just a little idea... took a while for the separate bits to come together to my liking- and I was quite surprised to find the diverse influences staring me in the ears in the end. Oh .. and thanks for reminding me about the intentional stuttering .. meant to put Bachman Turner Overdrive in the list too.. lol.

Selling Me Water
Alan - what a fabulous song! Your vocals on here are just perfect for the flow of the song, your intonations and expression are top notch. Love it when you go high in there (very impressive!) Cool infectious beats, great use of the horns, that bass really stands out nicely. GREAT SONG!!

Thanks Karen
.. the horns just seemed to 'work'- was a fairly late addition to this. On the 'high' note, you should have heard an early version .. lol .. springclock did .. and he'll vouch for that it wasn't 'quite' so impressive .. lol... a few takes and some 'wind' assisted that note was .. thanks for the compliments, very kind.

Thanks Ingo

can't wait to hear how some of your guitar stylings would add to this. Thanks for the offer. The brass is just some stock GB library loops (at least I think from GBv3 at least .. doubt they came from JP4), chopped up to suit and dotted around where I thought they worked most effectively.

Thanks Ghassan

.. I do seem to produce in a fairly set way.. but each time I try the odd different approach on certain things. In this I tried some different things with the drums: use of a gate on the DoD loops to actually remove some hi-hats, creating some unexpected variation(s).

The horns are stock GB loops, chopped up, re-effected to taste.

Phil Collins - the horns, the horns! :)

Very cool Alan - that rumbly bass line is so INXS

Nice one my friend in a kilt from Sweden.

Ah ..
Phil Collins .. yes .. *doh*. I thought more "mustang sally" hence the Mack Rice reference... I need to add BTO too for the stuttering .. I'll add Phil Collins too .. keep you happy .. lol.

Thanks for the listen Neil. :o)

.. it isn't funny at all. It's pretty disgusting. Everything we need, even essentials for life becomes a commodity, and is consequently sold in some way and thus sadly becomes something for the haves and have nots and a killer. For us in relative comfort, I just think we should use our taps and forget the whole bottled water malarky- which arguable contributes badly to the environment if the plastic isn't all re-cycled.

Did I hit that high note? Phew- truth be known it was a good few takes and slightly 'wind' assisted .. :o)

.. glad you liked that line. I was toying with the idea of changing the a bit awkward line "tapping into ever decreasing squares" trying some different delivery.. but also changing the line to "tapping into ever increasing squares" .. more for the "tap" and "TV" reference... since the song is largely inspired from watching TV... which get larger and larger .. lol.

.. "ever increasing rectangles" might be more geometrically correct.

Cool Brass
This is great. I think you can develop this even more. Vocals are excellent and well recorded. Is that brass a soundfont? If it is I want it! Love the bass, a great Fender sound with just the right amount of compression. Drums are well programmed, but I would give them a bit more compression and a little less reverb (that's just my taste though). Looking forward to the next one.

apb said 3699 days ago (April 6th, 2009)
Thanks Mark

I think I will take your advice on the reverb. This was a blanket reverb from GB I used .. and I think I changed it for some reason for the vocals . and adjusted the other instruments .. and forgot the drums. The brass is stock GB loops (at least in GBv3 library) called something like "RnB brass" .. there is 4 or 5 in the set .. I just chopped up some bits from them and effected them slightly.

The bass I put through Ampeg SVX plug-in .. 'tis very good .. I have to just be careful it isn't made too woolly (as it can be) by Ozone 3 matering on the master track.

selling me..
Great song and feel to this.
I had to pick up my guitar and play along.
Was just doing an open B for the verse and an open D and E for the chorus.
What I'm trying to say is maybe stick a simple guitar chord in here and there.
Apart from that great stuff and great lyrics

.. indeed, it's not so complicated chord wise .. yup B, to D to E and back again... that's it! :o) Thanks for the suggestion. I got an offer from I.G.M. to add some guitars which I took up. Looking forward to what he comes up with... always nice to get some new flavour/perspective .. despite being a guitarist primarily myself... doesn't mean I shouldn't bring in some other (much better) guitarist.

Love your singing voice Alan. The bass is terrific.

Now, can I interest you in a bottle of Sewageoutflow Spring with a hint of mint sauce?

"It's ..
.. a God awful small affair.." .. M'ars and this song .. lol. I knew you'ld appreciate that wheeze .. I thought to meesel' - Rebsie will get a kick out of that :o)

Thanks for the bass compliment- as you can tell, the bass line was the main idea from which the rest fell into place.

I'll pass on the bottled water: decent clean tap water .. and of course a jar of this famous mint sauce.. if there's a batch on the go :o)

glad you liked all these elements so far. Need to work it some more to get it up to length. Those horns are chopped up stock GB loops .. hence the tightness... I did very little in that respect.

I like the mood you set on this tune. Like the vocal delivery and the general vibe.

The high notes were pretty cool, too.

.. I kinda captured the mood more spontaneouslt with a 1st vocal take done close to when I got the idea- still 'in the exact mood'.. then I listened to that alot .. and just re-created it .. but tried to be tighter etc on this the 2nd vocal take (bar a few drop-ins or ten for that 'high' note) :o)

I'll pass on the water offer: I'll just pay the water-board for me tap water thx. :o)

.. ah the break-down bit? I wouldn't consider I was rapping .. but kinda akin (talking with a certain pacing and to a tact/rhythm). I think there is some wash effects (used at the intro) in there as well as the drums and vocals. Thanks for stopping in for a listen bud.

.. the horns were kinda thrown in and a quite liked the effect and genre crossing/mixing. Besides the partial 'stuttering' thing .. most of that vocal pacing idea is kinda Megadeth "peace sells" verse inspired... although it might be hard to hear that .. since I have a quite different accent and don't sound as mean as Dave Mustaine ..lol. Now back to the finishing touches on our collab .. :o)

Lets faucet ... :o)

they will be selling us 'Perri-air' in the not too distant future.. like in 'Spaceballs' ;o) if it's made and there is a demand... instead of addressing why there is a demand/market for it in the first place. Pollute the water .. sell 'better' water .. pollute the air .. etc. Natural selection will wipe us out ... we're pretty stupid as a species.
